We wouldn't stay in a connecting cabin either. We don't want to chance it. Having a balcony is a gamble within itself. That's why, like you we book early to get the pick of the litter. Same with hotel stays. When I make our hotel reservations I always ask for a non connecting room. Never had a connecting room with any Hilton properties including Hampton Inn. I always use HH points so I know the rooms we get are standard rooms.
