  1. We have never purchased insurance from Scootaround (or Special Needs at Sea, for that matter). Regarding their Cancellation Plans: We always actually rent a scooter about a week away from the ship's departure. If anything happens close to the cruise, we will be aware of it and if it is necessary to cancel the cruise, we will not have even rented the scooter. Their Equipment Protection Plans (there are two) do not offer much protection. Here is an excerpt from our Scootaround rental agreement from our cruise on the Equinox 2 weeks ago: Equipment Protection Plan EPP can be purchased at any time prior to the delivery date. We offer two levels of EPP – Basic and Plus. If EPP is purchased it must be purchased on all items, excluding accessories and stationary items such as recliners, hoyer lifts and concentrators. EPP is optional on stationary items. The same level of EPP purchased must be the same for all items on an order, excluding accessories. 1.1 EPP Basic for all non-motorized rental equipment is $2.00 per day, per rental item. 1.2 EPP Basic for all motorized rental equipment is $5.00 per day, per rental item. 2.1 EPP Plus for all non-motorized rental equipment is $4.00 per day, per rental item. 2.2 EPP Plus for all motorized rental equipment is $10.00 per day, per rental item. EPP Basic covers damage to the equipment, excluding keys, chargers, baskets, cup holders, battery packs, canopies and other accessories. If damage should occur during the rental period, the customer is responsible for a $50 deductible on non-motorized and $250 deductible on motorized equipment or the full replacement/repair cost, whichever is lower. The deductible will be charged immediately after the rental to the credit card used for the rental. EPP Basic does not cover loss or theft of the rental equipment. The rental cost is not applicable to the deductible. EPP Plus covers damage to the equipment, excluding keys, chargers, baskets, cup holders, battery packs and canopies. In addition, it also covers loss or theft of the equipment. If damage should occur during the rental period, the customer is responsible for a $50 deductible on non-motorized and $250 deductible on motorized equipment or the full replacement or repair cost, whichever is lower. The deductible will be charged immediately after the rental to the credit card used for the rental. The rental cost is not applicable to the deductible. In the event of theft, the customer is responsible to file a police report and provide a copy or claim number to Scootaround within 48 hours of the occurrence. Any theft will have a $100 deductible for non-motorized equipment and $500 deductible for motorized equipment or the full replacement cost, whichever is lower. Failure to provide a copy of the police report or the claim number will negate the need for a deductible as the customer will be responsible for the full replacement cost of any equipment, including accessories. All charges will be processed immediately after the rental is complete to the credit card used to place the rental. The rental cost is not applicable to the deductible or replacement cost. Any damages (excluding: Accessories), will require a $50.00 USD deductible. Any theft will have a $100.00 USD deductible for non-motorized equipment and a $250.00 USD deductible for motorized equipment excluding accessories. All charges will be processed immediately after the rental is complete to the credit card used for the rental.
  2. Please post your cruise line / ship. Each cruise line's website has a section on mobilitiy devices (you will need to let them know you will be bringing your own chair). But @GeezerCouple pretty much summed it up above. There are many, many wheelchair users on this board who can give you more specific responses (and links) once we know what cruise line you will be on.
  3. We did this itinerary on the Eclipse April 29-May 9, 2019. Weather was great. The water got a little choppy the last 2 days (going toward Vancouver).
  4. If you can book on board, do it. You get extra perks. Then transfer to your travel agent if you want.
  5. We just boarded the Equinox on Saturday and even though we had already uploaded photos, they took them again. This has happened a few times....
  6. We are going to be on Alaska this Friday from PDX to FLL. They definitely have a presence at PDX and we have flown them many times. They are our go-to airline, assuming their prices are in line with other airlines. Very comfortable and I definitely recommend them.
  7. Let us know what ports and what cruise line you are going to be on or are considering. With this information, we can give you better information. Also, if you are using a scooter you may need an accessible stateroom...
  8. We rented a scooter from Scootaround for a cruise out of Barcelona. And they do have Hoyer lifts so they may be a place to start.
  9. You might do a search on this board for hoyer. There have been other discussions about this. Consider renting one from Scootaround or Special Needs at Sea. If you're staying at a hotel before your cruise, they can even deliver one to your hotel room.
  10. Do a search on this board for scooter and you will find numerous discussions about them. Scooter rentals need to be through one of RCL's approved vendors (Special Needs at Sea or Scootaround). You might also need to book an accessible stateroom to accommodate the scooter. My husband always rents the transportable scooter (called the standard scooter by Special Needs at Sea). He is 5'11" and weighs 205 lbs. It's a perfect scooter for him. If you are comparing pricing between Special Needs and Scootaround, try using discount code USCRUISE at Scootaround (you may need to call to have it applied). It's from United Spinal. We have never purchased the damage or cancellation insurance. Read the fine print on these policies..... Have you seen this? https://www.royalcaribbean.com/experience/accessible-cruising/mobility-disabilities
  11. You didn't say which cruise line you will be on, but first of all doublecheck with your cruiseline (their Access or Special Needs Dept) regarding which mobility company(ies) they allow; this information should be on their website. Then contact the mobility company(ies) your cruise line allows to see if they can accommodate you. Both scootaround.com and specialneedsatsea.com rent mobility equipment in Europe and are mentioned frequently on this board. Note: a poster on another thread wrote that scootaround.com did not have rentals in Ravenna but I'd verify this. Plan B might be to purchase your own scooter or knee scooter and take it with you. If you buy/rent a scooter, make sure that it will fit through your stateroom door. You may need an accessible stateroom.
  12. As soon as you get to the terminal, advise a Carnival representive that wheelchair assistance is needed. They will steer you in the right direction, which typically means you will be waiting in an area where other passengers who have requested wheelchair assistance are waiting. I don't know about Manhattan, but at many terminals the port employees (the ones who load your luggage on to cart) will assist with wheelchair pushing. You can advise one of these port employees and they will either get a wheelchair and do the pushing (up to where they are allowed to go, then a Carnival pusher takes over) or they will tell you to go inside the terminal and advise a Carnival representative. Tips are appreciated by the pusher(s). This is direct from Carnival's website: WHEELCHAIR ASSISTANCE Each terminal has a limited supply of wheelchairs used to transport guests on and off the ship, so we are unable to loan you our wheelchairs for the duration of the cruise. If you need wheelchair assistance for boarding the ship, please contact one of our representatives once you arrive at the cruise terminal. Assistance will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. For assistance with debarkation, instructions on where to meet will be provided the last evening of your cruise.
  13. Glad you were able to get an accessible stateroom. You will do fine. Keep an eye on this board. There are many people who have lots of experience with cruising with mobility issues or other disabilities who are glad to help with questions.
  14. We always book early (a year or more out) because we need an accessible stateroom. These staterooms are booked quickly. The prices usually went down in the past and we would rebook at the lower price; however, more recently the prices have only gone up. Way up.
  15. This is an accessible shower on the Caribbean Princess. It has a shower curtain.
  16. A note about OBC. Make sure you take every confirmation you have concerning your OBC. Several times our OBC, according to Celebrity, has been less that what our reservation states. We will be on the Equinox next month and the OBC that is showing on our account is incorrect. I've gotten so used to this. We just go to customer service on the first full day with our confirmaiton of what our OBC is supposed to be and they correct it. So definitely have your back-up proof, just in case.
  17. Another idea. Post relevant parts of your question on the Princess board. Ask if anyone is currently on the Caribbean Princess who knows about the elevator going to the floor where the tenders board. Or possibly some kind person currently on board could check when they go ashore, or maybe they could ask.
  18. Someone on this board might have first hand knowledge about this and can answer. Otherwise I would contact the Princess Access Desk and ask them. The Princess website does say the crew cannot help with equipment weighing over 50 lbs.
  19. Have you seen this? https://www.ncl.com/about/accessible-cruising Your scooter has to be no larger than 26 inches wide to fit through your stateroom door. It has to stored in your room. Ask Scootaround about scooters that fit NCL's criteria. I would request wheelchair assistance for when you embark and on the last day when you disembark. Maybe someone else can answer, but I would ask Scootaround where you pick up your scooter in New York. Plus it will be on your confirmation once you book your scooter. And if you book a scooter from Scootaround, ask them to apply discount code USCRUISE for a discount. This code is from United Spinal. If you don't have experience with a scooter, you might practice with the ones in grocery stores or at try them out at a local mobility store. A mobility store might even have the same one you will be renting. If you like the scooter you rent, you might book an accessible stateroom next time. You would have to book early as they get booked fast. You and your scooter would have more room and a wider door.
  20. It depends on where you board. Out of 49 cruises, we have only had the scooter available outside the terminal building twice. It sure was nice! All other times it's in our stateroom. Scootaround will have instructions where your scooter can be picked up on the confirmation you get from them.
  21. I third this. My husband has a transport chair that we use at the airport and to the pier. But for on the ship (and getting off at some port stops), he rents a mobility scooter. He thinks that the best part of the cruise is getting his scooter after we board. The freedom obtained with a scooter is priceless.
  22. Direct from NCL's website (scroll down to ship transfers): https://www.ncl.com/about/accessible-cruising#mission-statement You might contact NCL's Access Desk to inquire about the tendering situation at your port stops. There may be different types of tenders at each stop.
  23. Just curious how you rented a scooter through cruise line (do you mean through Royal or through the website cruiseline . com ? In case you haven't already seen it, here is Royal's mobility link: https://www.royalcaribbean.com/experience/accessible-cruising/mobility-disabilities
  24. Do a search for colostomy on this board and you will see posts from other cruisers that might help. Regarding the scooter, do you have an accessible stateroom or will it fit through your stateroom door? If you haven't done so already, you will need to advise your cruise line's Access Department about the scooter. I know most lines have extensions cords and distilled water for a CPAP. What cruise line??
  25. Maybe. Our experience post-covid has been all over the board. From the scooter being in the room when we got there to it not being delivered until later. Hopefully your sister's will be in the room early. Pre-covid the scooter was always in the room when we got there (and we always board early).
