  1. In most countries that I visit, I have no issues of getting myself to a hotel from the airport, or vice versa. I generally prefer to do it by public transport. In locations where I am less comfortable (South Africa, Kenya, Hanoi, and Yangon) I arrange transportation with the hotel I am staying at. I don't generally need hand holding. (I did however take a taxi from my hotel near Dam Square in Amsterdam to the train station to catch the train to the airport when I was maneuvering with one arm in a sling.) For next year's cruise from Oslo to Copenhagen, I have hotels booked in both cities, in locations that I believe are walkable to where I believe that Silver Dawn will be docked. And I will take public transit from Oslo airport to the Central Station (and walk to the hotel) and, in Copenhagen, walk from my hotel to the nearest metro station to take the metro to the airport.
  2. Might I suggest that in order to provide assistance, people need to know what ports you are sailing to. Also, Viator is just a third party booking service. It is generally better to book with the people actually providing the tours.
  3. I have found that putting a towel or face cloth under my feet generally gives me enough friction to push myself up. I can't put pressure on my knees, so your method wouldn't work for me.
  4. Most cruising is done in the evening or at night. Any scenic daytime cruising is much better viewed from the sundeck. Remember that a river cruise ship is very small, and it is a simple matter to get from your cabin to the sundeck to enjoy any view from a 360 degree perspective. Also, because the width of the ship is determined by the size of the locks, any balcony takes away from the width of the cabin. As to the big suites, I have never sailed on Viking, but from my reading here some people have found them very noisy, because they are above the engines. I have sailed in an AMA twin balcony cabin, and find that neither the real balcony nor the French balcony are large enough to be useful.
  5. One reason for applying for Nexus is that it includes Global Entry and TSA PreCheck, but costs less than Global Entry. It does mean that you need to be approved by 2 different agencies, which complicates the approval process, but there is an advantage.
  6. I was going with the counting analogy a-three-a, a-four-a. (Yes I would use forums too.) And as a Canadian, I think we generally use the zed (not zee) in words like pluralization. We go for the British spellings on ou words like neighbour, but I think we go with American spellings on the zed words. 🤔
  7. For Israel I would say that it very much depends where you are going whether shorts are acceptable or not.
  8. Shouldn’t it be three fora? 😀
  9. I found 2,082 results searching for Bruges or Brugge. https://boards.cruisecritic.com/search/?&q=Brugge Bruges&search_and_or=or
  10. Thanks for your assistance. The current schedule runs to Dec 9 (with different frequencies by season). I will keep an eye on when the new schedule comes out. Do you know if there are snacks available on board the train? It looks like (on the current summer schedule) I would have to catch the 13:20 train to Myrdal which returns to Flåm at 15:26. The next train is at 14:35 which doesn’t return to Flåm until 16:50 which might be cutting it a bit fine. Current departure says 18:00. The 13:20 wouldn’t give me any time to eat, I don’t think.
  11. If you are searching, note it is Le Havre.
  12. Thanks for the information. I think I will try for the cruise with Silversea and the train on my own. I checked both vy.no and Norway’s Best. Neither is booking anywhere near next June yet so I’ll have to check for it. Someone in the Northern Europe forum mentioned being able to book tickets for August (I don’t know what year) in December but both sites say my date is more than 120 days away.
  13. Since you have done both the Flåm railway and the Næroyfjord cruise, could you answer a few questions. What time did you get back from your cruise/tour? I was thinking if I did that I might be able to do the railway on my own later. But I have been reading lots of posts about Silversea shortening port times, so I worry. I am also looking at the extra cost tour that does one way on the railway, then does part of the Oslo-Bergen railway line before returning by bus from Voss I think. Do you have a recommendation between the 2, having done therailway as well as the cruise? Thanks for your help.
  14. I will be doing a similar (but not identical) itinerary next June. Can you talk about the excursions you took in Flåm and Geiranger. I am having difficulty choosing excursions for these 2 ports. Thanks.
  15. I believe if you ever use public wi-fi for anything except simple browsing of mainstream websites (and maybe not even then) you ought to be using a VPN.
  16. That's the one we used as kids here in Canada.
  17. You actually should be on the regular River Cruising Forum (not the River Cruise Ports subforum). The best places are two threads there. I would go back about a week or 2 to see what the current situation is.
  18. Yes, that is the cruise. Look forward to meeting you. After a bit more research, I was trying to figure out whether it would be possible to do option 2 in the morning, and the Flåm railway on my own in the afternoon, but on the Silversea board it seems that departure times from ports are being advanced, which might mean that that option wouldn't work. I too like trains; I have taken them in lots of different places, so I think that I will stick to option 3.

  20. I hate to correct you, but only because I looked into this earlier today. The National Express website states that pickup from Terminal 5 is stops 11-15.
  21. Your information is in your signature; it has nothing to do with your roll call, except that it will be displayed there on anything you post. Here is a link to how to edit it. When you update your signature, I believe that the updated signature will show up on all your posts, even ones you made before you changed it.
  22. There would be 2 separate pickups, one at the Central Bus Station (between Terminals 2 and 3) and one at Terminal 5. See below. https://www.nationalexpress.com/en/airports/heathrow
