If a CD is informative and not annoying, they have my vote.
A few years ago, the ship was headed to Vietnam and a veterans meeting was announced. I attended and it was very meaningful.
On cruises visiting countries outside the US, we take the conservative approach … always stay overnight on the ship. The risk of being “stuck” outweighs the benefits of an overnight away from the ship.
We found driving in Ireland permitted us to visit a number of places that were not very feasible on a cruise. But, as we are older, what works for us is a big city (Dublin) stay and a cruise around Ireland.
Oceania food is generally above the lines you mentioned. Entertainment is decent but many of the passengers seem to prefer quiet nights and get to sleep rather early.

A few times we have experienced a cab driver locking the doors. We were not concerned as we were traveling through some local streets here in NYC. Felt it was a safety measure.
There is much to do in Miami and I am sure your ship will offer some events. Might be best to stay with the ship offered activities rather than explore on your own in a city you are unfamiliar with.
