sparky-elpaso Posted February 8, 2010 #27 Share Posted February 8, 2010 Now I'm really looking forward to our first HAL cruise - although I think I'm glad we'll be asking for a table for 2.
cruz chic Posted February 9, 2010 #28 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Watching the doll lady was one of the things that made that cruise so interesting. The doll had its own miniature passport and I saw it at lifeboat drill with a life jacket on. Bizarro:eek: OMG...I didn't see the passport. That's too funny! Glossop Posted February 9, 2010 #29 Share Posted February 9, 2010 I was on the Noordam cruise 11th November 2009 I didn't see anyone carrying around a stuffed cat but there was a couple who always pushed around a shopping trolley - maybe the cat was in the bag!!! It was a wonderful cruise, I went with a friend who had never cruised HAL before, she can't wait for the next time - hopefully it will be the Noordam again in November 2010. shootr Posted February 9, 2010 #30 Share Posted February 9, 2010 OK, I'm confirmed for a table for 2 for early seating. That's a lock, right? They can't say they screwed up and I find myself at a table full of loonies and fish hats, right? RIGHT???
Rare foodsvcmgr Posted February 9, 2010 #31 Share Posted February 9, 2010 On QM2 last December, a middle aged man and woman carried two stuffed animals into the Commodore Club one evening during cocktails. They placed them on top of the piano then took their photo along with the pianist (who didn't blink an eye). The couple was there most other evenings, but without their "friends". Seemed fairly normal other than that. Looking forward to sailing VEENDAM April 25th, hopefully all fellow passengers will be of the living/breathing variety.
Marianne Posted February 9, 2010 #32 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Some years back we were in San Diego a few days before our cruise to Mexican Riviera. We decided to go to the SD Zoo mostly to see the baby panda bear. After jaunting around the zoo, I decided I just had to have a big stuffed panda, found one I liked and bought it. Later it occured to me, I would have to take it on the ship, it certainly wouldn't fit in my luggage. So feeling a bit silly, I carried it on board, and put it on our bed in the room. It really looked great there, so began to enjoy it. I had to carry that darn panda to the Airport later and on board the plane. It did bring smiles and I remember airline staff enjoyed it. But -- it never occupied a seat in the dining room. I almost gave it to the room steward. Marianne
lettienets Posted February 9, 2010 #33 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Some of these eccentricities add to the fun of a cruise too.:p If people want to wear wierd hats, carry dolls or animals etc I find it rather enjoyable. Obviously there is something that has meaning to them in strange ways we don't understand. Fun nonetheless.
nutyfruits Posted February 9, 2010 #34 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Well....we'd have to admit to being a little crazy, too! We have a beloved Black Lab at home, who unfortunately is not allowed on cruise ships! So....we have a small beanie baby black lab who accompanies us on our trips around the world. We get a little trinket at each place we visit and she has a box full of souveniers. Yes, it's a little nuts, but it's all in fun, and the kids enjoy seeing what 'Lucy' has brought home for them on the trips they can't join us! Rare Roz Posted February 9, 2010 #36 Share Posted February 9, 2010 I agree with Ruth! My lunch onboard with one these crazies reminded me of a lunch I had in the cafeteria of a state mental hospital, only the mental patients were saner! One of my cousins was a psychologist there, and I would get a kick out of visiting him. I would always ask to have lunch in the cafeteria with the general population. "Enjoyable" is very MUCH to word for those of us who have laughed our sides sore as you have described Hat Lady and her routine ... especially the "Two All Beef Patties, Special Sauce, Lettuce, Cheese, Pickles Onions on a Sesame Seed Bun" Hamburger Hat. The "after-the-face" entertainment value has been high!

Rare PatriciaF Posted February 9, 2010 #40 Share Posted February 9, 2010 I know this will sound silly, but here goes Back in November we were on Noordam, during one of the formal nights a couple, very well dressed, were walking around holding a stuffed cat.....they even had some nice portraits taken with there fury friend Does anyone know anything about this cat; I’m very intrigued to find out more..................... I too don't have a clue about this--but have a question, was this a toy stuffed cat or a dead cat that has been stuffed (taxidermy)? I have a friend who had her beloved pet chihuahua stuffed after it died. Now, she has realized it is a bit odd, but is torn on how to dispose of it. Ruth, I haven't had such a close encounter with one of the eccentrics at my table. It is fun nonetheless to see some wierd antics or characters onboard. Rare foodsvcmgr Posted February 9, 2010 #42 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Just thinking here, has anyone ever observed this type of behavior OTHER than on a cruise? I work in a large hotel/casino and have never seen adults toting around dolls or stuffed animals like they were real. Wonder why folks pick cruises to act out in this way?
kakalina Posted February 9, 2010 #43 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Can't say I have noticed it anywhere else. Odd that. One really strange person was an elderly gentleman who sat alone at his table for two every night. One evening I asked the waiter to invite him to join us as he looked so lonely. The waiter introduced me to the man and I invited him over. He declined saying how much he enjoyed dining with his lovely wife. OK, we didn't see any wife. We started paying more attention. He poured wine and ordered food for his invisable wife. It was very odd to our table. Later in the cruise we found out his wife had passed away and he wasn't dealing very well. Of course, once we knew we thought he was so sad. Still very odd, but very sad.
yogi2929 Posted February 9, 2010 #44 Share Posted February 9, 2010 The only time I have seen this was on an Alaskan cruise. There was a woman of a certain age who loved wearing her moose antler hat in one port and another interesting hat in another Never saw her on the ship so I do not know if she was with us or following us. Maybe this was Ruth's Hat Lady? On the same cruise a family had a cut-out face on a stick of the teen who couldn't join them. He was in many of their pictures and even went on a couple of excursions with them. They were going to give him a photo album of the fun time he had in Alaska. They were making sure that the teen was with them, if only in spirit, and knew they thought about him.

Denny01 Posted February 9, 2010 #47 Share Posted February 9, 2010 I'm usually a Celebrity cruiser and spend most of my CC time over there. But someone mentioned the doll-lady and sitting it at the dining table over here on the HAL forum, so I just had to come over and see this. What a Great Thread! This may get me to cruise HAL just for the fun of it. And I thought 'weird' was wearing oxfords with striped bermuda shorts - I live a very sheltered life. OK, now that I've read the whole thread, I have a question. I know it won't be acceptable on Celebrity since there hasn't been a thread such as this at any time, but since HAL seems so much more accepting, can I bring my Blow-Up doll to dinner and have her sit with us? I'll make sure she's properly dressed and all. Denny

And no jeans, because they "belong on the farm!" If she's not properly dressed, she has to stay out on the open decks, and, oh yeah, can you get her to keep her mouth shut?
