JetBlue incident - Ever 'blow up' at other passengers/staff?

On the back of the recent Jetblue story of the attendant who 'wouldn't take it anymore', have any of you been in that situation with other passengers who were rude or obnoxious - and blew up at them? Perhaps 'blown up' might be a bit harsh but actually told them off instead of passively ignoring the rudeness?

On my last trip on the Carnival Miracle, I was seated in the theater awaiting the show to start when a rude man came up to the row in front of me and demanded in an 'obnoxious' threatening manner to an old lady in the row to move up to the next seat so that he and his trophy wife can have two seats. The way he said it was so rude and alpha-male behavior.

I just couldnt take it and told him that his manners were abhorrent and unacceptable. I told him that politeness would have gone a long way - plus a lot of other choice words (no cursing!)

Needless to say, his wife was a little embarrassed by her man's behavior. The old lady thanked me after the show ... she told me that people dont seem to have politeness and manners anymore. Too true.

I have been on line at Guest Relations a few times when the people in front of me have literally made the people at the desk cry due to their disrespect and rudeness, and the guest's inability to "bend", even if they were wrong. I tell the worker that they did the right thing - 99% of the time they do, but the passengers just didn't want to hear it. I have gone so far as to call the supervisor out, or write a note explaining the wonderful job the desk staff did, but the passenger was impossible to please. I have literally heard guests screaming at workers for minor, petty things. People have to learn to lighten up.

In line at the Grill Station on the Miracle a lady asked me to hand her a plate then had the nerve to cut in front of me in line. I couldn't believe what I just witnessed and really couldn't believe it was happening to me. I was so dumbfounded I was speechless a miracle just ask my wife.

On our Glory cruise to Nassau, St. Thomas and St. Maarten, we had propulsion problems going into Nassau. Our itenerary was then changed to Freeport and Key West. Coming back from the beach at Freeport in a van taxi, one of the passengers ranted and raved and made the whole ride back miserable about how he was going to tell everybody back on the ship how they should all sue Carnival for breach of contract. Finally I had had enough and told him the only ones that would gain any money would be the lawyers because had he read his contract, Carnival has the right to change iteneraries if needed. The rest of the people turned around and smiled at me and there was total silence the rest of the ride.

while waiting on the long lunch buffet line on the Destiny my mother in law and I were patiently waiting our turn, when we finally made it to the dish pick up position a made came strolling up very casually and slipped himself in, grabbed a dish and proceeded to get his food in front of us...we just looked at one another...but I really wanted to flattened him right there on the spot!

Sadly, we see it on just about every cruise.

Earlier this year, there was a lady (with all her jewelry on) just berating a cabin steward in the hallway, because he did not keep enough ice on her diet coke.

She just ranted on and on about how she was going to have his "little arse"....and she was a Platinum member...she had 12 cruises with Carnival and was going to get him fired.

I just couldn't help myself..... I was walking by and said

" my 19 year old had 3 times as many cruises on Carnival than you do and the cabin steward should not be fired....she should be kicked off the ship for being a rude idiot." then I just kept walking....

It shut her up..... ;)

I went back later that afternoon and gave the cabin steward a $10 tip and told him to just ignore "ugly Americans"....

On our last cruise, another passenger tried to get me riled up so that I would get mad at ship security.

My husband and I went to grab some friends from the disco so we could meet up with our group like we had planned. When we got to the club, they carded me (18+ club, I was 24 ) Since we were literally going in for 2 seconds to retrieve our friends, and I'm lazy like that, I told hubby I would wait for him where I was. Right behind us was this kid who also got carded, and instead of showing his ID, he threw a fit, talking about how he had just come from the casino, yadda yadda he was so offended. So then he tried to get me upset and how dare they card me and I shouldn't have to take that and clearly I look like I'm over 18. I looked him square in the eye, said "I'm not worried, because if I wanted to go in that badly I would show them my ID." Then hubby walked out with our friends and we left.

A little while later we saw the kid again in the casino, to which I calmly pointed out to the casino manager that he'd just gotten denied entrance to the club for not being 18.

In regards to the airline steward, he acted unprofessional. He must have laid awake at nights figuring out what way would be the best way to leave the job with a grand exit. Releasing that slide could have injured people on the ground. He could of had that woman arrested for violent behavior and assault. He handled it badly. He needs to find a different line of work.JMHO.

There is no reason to "blow up" at staff. If you feel you are in the right and or have been mistreated the best way to handle it is to escalate it above that person.

As for blowing up at other passengers... only if they VERY directly effect/affect (hate those words) me or my family.

You see I dont know if "idiot passenger" wont try to one up me... cause if they do I will one up them... then a viscous cycle starts.

I prefer to let the people on the ship handle it.

At least he waited for the plan to land, before opening the door/slide.

Could have been worse

I agree this guy is unstable

Flight attendants have come a long way from servers to an important cog in pax safety

Pulling a chute to leave a jet cause he couldn't take a bad pax is an unstable move

You must be able to deal with rude people in that posistion

As I get older , I just cannot suffer fools gladly anymore and if someone really goes beyond the pale to annoy me I have to speak out.

On a cruise ship, in a store , in line at the bank, wherever.

An honest mistake is an honest mistake and I will always be the first to give the benefit of the doubt.

But when someone clearly fires the first round I usually return it fast and hard.

My kids are probably right and I will get my butt shot one day *LOL*

Rude people are everywhere and there is no difference on a ship. You also get people from different cultures and rude us might not be rude to them.

I had one insident with rude people but it was on their private island and they didn't involve the ship staff. They basically calmed both sides down and told each side what they wanted to hear. This is pretty typical and probably the best way to handle it.

Well, I've been on both sides.....a flight attendant and now working on my frequent sea miles. People, i have noticed have had an entiltlement personality for quite a while! Sad but, those of us who do not like confrontation this is difficult. For now, I will keep my mouth shut, sympathize with those that are on the other end of their terror and let them cut in front me knowing what goes around, comes around:D

While I don't agree with the slide and the fact he could have injured/killed someone, I can't say I blame him for what he did. I often wonder when that one customer is going to come in that is going to be the final straw for me and cause me to walk. Most of the people I work with day in and day out are wonderful people but some folks really have no compassion for others. How do you know if the Customer service rep you abuse just lost a love one, has a serious disease, misses a child at daycare, has no family, is struggling to pay the bills, etc?? People really just need to try to be kinder to others in general.

I have worked in the service industry for many years now and still do.. but I have had incidences at work where my staff has had things thrown at them by customers that had to wait 3 and half minutes for food:eek:.

I've seen it on the ships as well.. they way the staff goes out of their way to make sure our every whim is satisfied but some still figure it is Ok to be abusive is beyond me.. Some figure because they are in a certain category of cabin or a certain category of card holder think they deserve things just because..I also saw this on RCCL where there is areas in the theatre that are resvered for suites only.. while on Carnival it is first come fisrt served.. you sit where there is room, the only reserved spots are for the kids...

So for me( IMHO) I will be the one that will stand up for the staff/ person that is getting abused by a customer as I have walked a mile in there shoes

On our last cruise there was a passenger who was very overweight, and she clearly had lymphedema in her legs (a very, very serious case, "grotesque," tho I don't like that word).

She was coming out of the pasta bar, and a couple of college kids were just absolutely VICIOUS in their comments to her, mocking her, making sure that the woman heard them, one of the college guys did like a "wolf whistle" at the woman.

Hubby and I were walking through the area and saw/heard it all unfold. When the guy did the wolf whistle, I said, "She can lose weight. You can't grow a pe*is."

Everyone in the area (even his friends) cracked up and laughed at HIM.

I kind of like how this gal quit her job on Monday:

I somehow think she's going to be ok, too. :)

I think she's going to be ok too. Especially considering she's an actress and the whole thing was a hoax.
