RLA2010 Posted September 8, 2010 #51 Share Posted September 8, 2010 (edited) Amen Sister! I completely agree with not judging people whether they/we wear lanyards or not. I also don't bother with a purse on board - I'm on VACATION after all! As for some of us OCD sufferers, knowing that my cabin key is attached to my body in some way without me having to look in my purse or pocket 5 times before I close the door, I LOVE my lanyard, thank you very much! I'm not cruising to impress people - I'm there to enjoy time spent with my DH. Oh, by the way, I HAVE worn my slippers to the buffet too! Slippers to buffet sounds comfy!! I'm very excited to lounge in my PJs whilst enjoying breakfast on my balcony! :D OMG two more days of work and then I leave for vacation!!! cruiseloverohio Posted September 8, 2010 #52 Share Posted September 8, 2010 I like the lanyard because I loop it around the handle of my purse/deck bag and then hang it down inside my purse......that way, when I need it, I just pull on the lanyard and I don't have to fumble with it being at the bottom of the bag and I don't have to get my wallet out

Cruisin' Chick Posted September 8, 2010 #54 Share Posted September 8, 2010 I just want to clarify the response I made earlier.....We only wear the card on a lanyard while onboard. It's just easier. We NEVER wear them ashore! I don't want to call attention to myself as a tourist any more than I have to for security/safety reasons. I use mine onboard and before we get off the ship, transfer $, photo ID, ship's card to a little pouch that I can wear under my clothes. My hubby liked that so when he saw some in a store, he bought a couple more. I believe that when you return to the ship, your card is swiped. Your picture is then brought up on a monitor, and a security person will look at it and verify. When you first board the ship, you will stop by a photo machine that will take your photo. This is not optional as this is the photo that is imbedded onto your cabin keycard. Whenever you are leaving the ship in port or returning, you will insert your card into a card reader. When you hear the "ding" that means you can proceed. This is the way to keep track of who's on board or not.

chipmaster Posted September 8, 2010 #56 Share Posted September 8, 2010 (edited) Must be me, but in all my cruise haven't felt the need to buy one before or on the ship. Each time I get on, I notice all those that wear them around the neck and go that might be nice, but again I have survived every cruise without one fine, as have my kids. Do they hand them out with the card for free when you start your cruise? How much are they if they aren't free and I wonder if I should just buy some cheap at home first. TIA!! shass Posted September 8, 2010 #57 Share Posted September 8, 2010 I'm a newbie...and if I feel like wearing a lanyard around my neck when I'm on board - I'm pretty darn sure that I'll still be more attractive than you wrinkly 'experienced' lanyard biased peeps. I can guaruntee you that!!! It makes me laugh how a cruising 'status' can make people take on an elitist attitude. Get over yourselves.

Welcome to cruise critic, but you needn't get your pannties in a wad over this. Different people have different opionions and that's the beauty of cruise critic. People can state their experiences, facts, preferences, and opinions. No need for you to be so abrasive about it.

bplazo Posted September 8, 2010 #60 Share Posted September 8, 2010 They do have some pretty lanyards that are made with beads and you can wear on your wrist. As far as people who think they are stupid looking, good thing I don't give a poop what you think about what I wear. To each his own.
gr8times4us Posted September 8, 2010 #61 Share Posted September 8, 2010 Me also! Plus it is so much easier with kids because I can do a quick scan to make sure everybody has thiers. To the OP No they don't hand them out, but they do have them in the ships store and they make a great souvenier for about $6. They are a lot cheaper in the ports (about $2 to $4) and I pick one up at each new port I go to. They are much more fun to wear at work then the plain ones handed out by my employeer. That way everybody gets to see where I was last :D If you want a lanyard with your ships logo or name, just go to eBay and bid on one! Or a towel, a fanny pak, a beach bag, a t-shirt or just about anything. Just put your ship's name in the search bar and be amazed at what you can win! CathyI8205 Posted September 9, 2010 #63 Share Posted September 9, 2010 I found a cute lanyard on e-bay. And yes, I'm a new cruiser. Besides, DH wonders how I'm going to pay for all my drinks if I have one in each hand. This way they can just scan my card and not have to pull it out of my pocket. ;)

They usually take it which will require you to get it out, then they bring it back and you sign the bill.
CathyI8205 Posted September 9, 2010 #65 Share Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) Guess I'll have to put down one of my drinks so I can sign the bill. :) At least they give you a receipt. I can keep track off all my charges. Edited September 9, 2010 by CathyI8205
MayerPaint Posted September 10, 2010 #66 Share Posted September 10, 2010 Besides my sale card, I like to carry a kitchen clock on my lanyard. The Old Lady and I have yet to miss the ship. Don’t forget sometimes your cell phone clock is not set to ship time.

EatPrayCruise Posted September 11, 2010 #68 Share Posted September 11, 2010 Oh, my gosh, what a hoot! I guess this brings wearing a lanyard to a whole new level! I'm sitting in the dark laughing out loud! Thanks for the fun.
ecosense Posted September 11, 2010 #69 Share Posted September 11, 2010 (edited) OMG!!!!! this thread has me cracking UP! Criminy, folks......simmer down! (for those of you who need to, that is!) Its a preference, not a cause for judgement! BUT, having said THAT, I will pigeonhole myself and admit to being a major lanyard fan. I like knowing that my S&S card, ID, cash, and (GASP!) cell phone are all in one place and hanging from my body! Its MY cruise, and I will be experiencing varying stages of excitement, exhaustion, drunkenness, and flailing (dance floor......its not pretty but it sure is fun!:p), and finally the casino......I have about knocked myself down by trying to leave a slot machine while still ATTACHED to the darn thing but that is a GOOD thing because you know darn well I would leave that silly but oh-so-important card in that machine. Having all of the above items ATTACHED to me is a wonderful thing! AND......since I will be celebrating my 50th on my cruise next month, I can guarantee that there will be some less-than-lucid moments during the week! WAY FUN! Lanyards ROCK! (as do those who wear them, or NOT!) So, those of you who don't wear them, I am actually in awe of how you keep track, so GO FOR IT! If you love lanyards, wear them and whatever you all do.......have FUN! Life is too short to be cranky and judgmental, or allow those who ARE to make your life any less wonderful than it is! LOVE LIVE LAUGH! Edited September 11, 2010 by ecosense misspelled word!
jenale80 Posted September 13, 2010 #70 Share Posted September 13, 2010 Lanyards seem like a good idea. We will be taking our Vegas casino card straps and a hole punch, to keep our on board cards on hand.
TravelRocker Posted September 18, 2010 #71 Share Posted September 18, 2010 (edited) Hi, let me "chime in" here too. I plan on wearing my card on a lanyard for my next cruise as well. I don't wear pockets, ever and don't want to scrounge around in a purse or tote all the time. I work for a rock band and wear my All Access laminate on a lanyard all the time. But, the difference is that I really "bling" it up. I have found beautiful ones made of beads at the Harvest Festival, Wine and Art festivals and even at an airport gift shop. I have red, turquoise, gold, moonstone, black and purple so far. One of my favorites is a beautiful silver one from Brighton with a heart with clip attahed for passes/cards. If your "crafty" go to a bead store and put together a custom one. It will get noticed, but for all the right reasons. It doesn't have to look like it's on a "string", make it nice part of your wardrobe, my colors are turquoise, pink, black with silver, OK, now I gave myself away, haha. Have a great cruise and do your own thing! Cheers Edited September 18, 2010 by TravelRocker
gram2kids Posted September 19, 2010 #72 Share Posted September 19, 2010 To all the naysayers of wearing a lanyard on a cruise...it's not like a person has a placard around their neck announcing they have leprosy "Stay Away". It's for the convenience of holding your card/ID when you may not have a pocket/handbag available. If you don't like lanyards for yourself, fine, but there is no need for you to comment negatively on those who choose to wear them. You may have a shirt/blouse that we may not like but that is your personal choice and right to wear it, not ours. Relax, it's just a lanyard. :)

gram2kids Posted September 19, 2010 #74 Share Posted September 19, 2010 Funny thing about the lanyard complainers, they are tourists also, unless they are working on the cruise ship. What do they call themselves if they are not a tourists...personal negative cruise critic traveler?
