Rc -vs- Carnival " A cop's point of view"

I know I know it’s all subjective but I just want to add my two cents. I have only been on four cruises and two have been RCCL and two have been Carnival. In my opinion I know that I like larger ships…I like sea days and lazy beach days. Food is a big deal but it has been hit or miss for me on both lines. In fact I don’t really care for the dining room food on either line. I did however have the best steak of my life on the Carnival Liberty in the specialty restaurant. Now to the important part….as a law enforcement officer I relish the opportunity to get out of the Chicago land area….get on a beach and decompress. I will not allow other passengers to ruin my vacation and I’m not going to get all prissy and look down my nose at anyone. However on my two Carnival cruises there were numerous occasions where I had to suppress my “cop instincts” and not get involved in situations that I was observing. That never happened on RC so I think that from now on I will cruise RC. Everyone has their reason and this is mine.

Thank you Chicago Cop for your view. I feel the same way. I have been on both cruise lines and prefer RCL. In fact I have three upcoming cruises already booked on both cruise lines. I like the fact that if I wake up at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning on a RCL ship and can't sleep I can walk around the ship without having to run into a crowd of pre-teens running the hallways, sitting on the stairs blocking it for other passengers, having play fights etc.

As to you being a cop. There is an old saying at the place I work (admin. offices of a local school board); "once a teacher, always a teacher." I think that the same applies to you - once a cop, always a cop. While we are thousands of miles apart it is nice to be reminded that cops also take cruises. And if I am ever on a tour and a situtation arrives that we can't handle, just maybe, there will be a cop on my tour bus that knows how to handle the situtation.

Thanks for all you do.

Well thanks guys I do appreciate that. It’s funny but I believe that a teacher is the most thankless job and that you guys cannot be paid enough money for the important job you have and the limited time and resources that you have to do it in. Teachers should cruise free.

We've been on more Carnival cruises than RCI and we also prefer the larger ships and the ride on RCI. But, I do have to say, the only incident I've ever seen was on RCI and that involved a drunk woman who was being followed around by security and a friend. She ended up arguing with security and then throwing up (outside deck fortunately) before being escorted away. The lines are much more alike than they are different. They are, after all, mass market cruise lines and you have to pay a lot more if you really want an upscale cruise and upscale food.

Wow, great perspective, thanks. Also, I appreciate that your opinion is not only based on your cop perspective, but also on that you've actually taken two cruises on each line. So often on here you read opinions about a cruise line just based on what people have heard -- your opinion carries more weight since it's based on your experience.

I know what you mean about suppressing your instincts...I'm a high school teacher and more than once I've told an unruly teenager to behave on board. I probably should just let it go, but I can't help myself. God gave me the gift of fussing at teenagers :)

I agree with you! I have been on 13 cruises and have seen more fights and obnoxious behavior on Carnival ships. I have had fun and enjoyed my cruises, but happen to feel more comfortable on RCI. I personally like the Radiance size RCI ships, never had a problem on them.

The only problems with drunks I have encountered have both been on RCL cruises .. I guess I should say Im never going to cruise RCL again... really??

Pax change and they do things they should not.

During a past guest party I had this old man sitting next to me in the theater (so I couldnt get up and easily move and I had people on the other side of me too while they were doing something up on stage. He was so drunk, he spilled drinks on me repeatedly. Dropped his glass on my shoulder, and he couldnt hear it (I guess he was so drunk he couldnt hear either).

The other time was during the few scheduled bridge times in the card room, so group of about 10 drunks came into the card room to play a very loud gambling game. The oldest was some old lady who was shouting and carrying on, We had to quit playing after only a little time, no one would play bridge with the drunks carrying on, especially the one lady.

I should now label RCL as a drunks cruise and avoid them because of some old people who were really drunk

I'm a secretary not a teacher but I would not want their jobs, especially today. But where I live and work, teachers do not put their lives on the line like you cops do.

If you go back and read his first post again, he was giving "HIS" reason for one cruise line over the other. We all have diffferent reasons for picking one ship or cruise line over another. He was just giving his opinion. No need to get all worked up over his opinion.

Thanks for your point of view! I 100% agree with you that vacation is an opportunity for anyone to get away from the norm! I see that we live in the same town-funny to see a fellow Tinley Park-er!! I would also like to thank you for your services :) I fortunately have never witnessed such behavior on any of my cruises, but maybe you're more sensitive to your surroundings due to your career-I would imagine it would be VERY hard to let go of those instincts, even on vacay! I'm in audiology, so the only instinct I have is to try and see what type of hearing aid a person is wearing :p As much as I do prefer Royal over carnival (in all fairness, I've only been on one Carnival) I do feel that these things can happen on any cruise line-it can happen anywhere unfortunately.

Sorry, I would have been out of there no matter how difficult it would have been to leave.

I'm very thankful because of all the cruises that we've been on (Carnival, Royal and Princess) we've always sailed either on March Break or the summer - only once exception - (hubby is a teacher) and the worst I've ever seen is college kids at formal dinner wearing things like bunny slippers and inappropriate non-formal wear. In the big scheme of life, not a huge deal.

Maybe I don't see much because we usually go back to our cabin after the theatre lets out and only occasionally will go dancing. I'm usually too wiped from the day to do much more!

But with all that said, Royal seems to be our preferred cruise line too. To us it's the decor of the Princess with the fun of the Carnival but also includes a wow factor that we just love.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the poster is a not a chicago cop. You must live in Chicago to be one. Tinley park is a relative cakewalk.

My understanding is that the location listing is where a person lives. Often people live in one area and work in another, so a person could live in Tinley Park and still be a Chicago cop. But I also don't think that the OP presented himself by saying he was a Chicago cop - he said he was from "Chicago land" which means the greater metropolitan area. Other posters are the ones calling him a Chicago cop.

Why judge me as worked up ???

I find people on both RCL and Carnival threads who I wish were more open minded.. I was just pointing out that deciding not to cruise on a cruiseline again because you ran into pax who were acting bad .. rather than something that has to do with the actual cruise ....

I argue with folks who post against RCL on the Carnival threads too when the reason makes no sense to me.

btw I was just expressing my opinion ... why is it if someone doesnt like your OPINION, they want to jump on you the same way you are accusing me of? pax do change, so personally I would not decide on a cruiseline because some pax acted up...can happen to anyone on any cruiseline and its not the fault of the cruiseline. Lots of rude people and its getting worse.

Yes police should be awarded and praised everyday. And they deserve recognition for the job they do. But here on planet earth where you say you live individuals who work in schools might as well be police officers. We are disrespected and assaulted by the children we teach. We have to be their mothers, fathers and social workers. And we have to deal with the parents of these troubled individuals. That's another story. We have a very hard job. And by no means am I comparing us to police officers. But each year we do more behavior management and less teaching. People fail to realize that the education of their children is very important it shapes their futures.

If the poster lives in Tinley Park and is a Chicago Cop, he will be fired very shortly.

I was just correcting the one poster who called him a chicago cop, which is wrong. Chicago deals with a lot more bs including their Superintendent J-FLED.

And yours is the only profession that has its bad as well as its good aspects? As for your last line..... give me a break.

We all chose our professions. We all learn to deal with the good and the bad.... or we get out.

Ok let me clean this up a bit. I live in Tinley…I work for Cook County. For those of you who are not from here Chicago is in Cook County but I do not work for the Chicago Police Department and yes CPD is up against it every second and I do not envy them. I hope that clears it all up and I can’t wait until May when I can take my DW on the Oasis for her 40th b-day. Actually she says 39 and holding she won’t acknowledge that she will be 40. Oh by the way the deciding factor was that we will be in Cozumel doing the bar hop on her b-day. Stay safe everyone and enjoy life

We, are platinum with RC, have cruise on Carnival, 2 Princess and 2 Celebrity as well. We were on two Carnival cruises (our 1st and 2nd cruises) and didn't like them at all. The service was bad, the guests, for the most part, were loud, drunk and behaved like college spring breakers. Then I went with my sister on a Carnival cruise on the Carnival Freedom and I was pleasantly surprised!!! We found no party animals, the food was wonderful and the service, good. I felt that since the count was 2-1, we had just gotten lucky.

Having said all that, we just like RC better overall. They tend to be the most consistent with everything including how they handle difficult passengers. We will stick with RC until they make drastic changes in their product, service, etc.
