Paying for items on board

Looking forward to our first cruise and had a simple question (which I am sure is covered somewhere, this board is incredible). When buying a drink or going to the casino, do you just pay with your sail and sign card? How does that work?

Anything you buy on the ship or their private island will be charged to your sign and sail....not sure about gambling, tho...we always use CASH for gambling expenses! Only gamble what you can afford to lose!

I've been to a "private islands" that had straw markets and the like run by local residents, and you could NOT charge something you purchased from them to your sign and sail card. Cash was required. If you're buying something from the ship (beverages, renting snorkel equipment, etc. you do pay for those items with your sign and sail card.)

Anything you buy on the ship which includes drinks, tours, beauty salon, etc, will be charged to your shipboard account. They do not use cash for transactions. You simply present your ship card and they either imprint it or swipe it just like a credit card at home. On the last day, the ship will then collect the money for all your purchases either by entering a charge on your credit card, charging your debit card or using the $USD that you gave them.

In short besides opening your stateroom door, it will be used for all ship board purchases just like a credit card at home. It will also be swiped when leaving and returning to the ship at port calls. It is a very important card!

On Carnival (not sure about other lines) you can "transfer" money from your sign & sail account to your casino account. When you are done gambling you can cash out at the casino cage and put the cash in your pocket. Put your sign & sail in a slot machine and the sceen comes up to do this. If you use a credit card to fund your S&S account this shows up as a regular charge and NOT a cash withdrawl.

Cash for the casino, as well as room service tips and extra tips if you give anything extra to the crew on the last day (in addition to the auto tips).

Remember cash for cab rides and to tip the porters when you get to the pier.

If you are shopping on the islands take cash.
