Roll Call: Equinox TA 11/28/2011

Welcome Don & Greg!

This is our first Trans Atlantic and our first Celebrity cruise, so we are (pardon the expression) in the same boat! We're arriving on Friday, the 25th in the AM and staying at Hotel Artemides. We definately would like to get a group together to go to the pier on Monday. Also, maybe dinner Saturday or Sunday night in Rome? Anyone?

Welcome Don & Greg, You are going to enjoy a Transatlantic and the Equinox. We are arriving on the 27th and staying in Civitavecchia. In Livorno we are going to take the train to Lucca and Pisa, if you would like to join us let me know. We are late seating due to we like to go to the Martini bar first and it's kind of hectic to try and make dinner after coming back from touring in the ports.

In Barcelona we are just going to walk around since we have been there before. From what we understand Cartagena all the sites are around the port, therefore we are not going to do a tour.

If you would like some suggestions on what to see in Rome just email me at pennys-dad@ hotmail dot com

JoePDX--thanks for the welcome :).

sfldan-We really will be in the same boat--both metaphorically and literally. :D

We don't have a hotel yet for Rome--we are visiting another friend in Austria and are unsure when we will finish meeting up with her.

We would be up for meeting up for dinner while in Rome as well--perhaps we can discuss things to do on the cruise when we are in port and on sea days. We don't have any transportation arrangements yet going from Rome to Civitavecchia so we are up for going together as a group.

shaq--We have heard many good things about this ship and are also excited about the ports of call. It has been more than 10 years since I have been in Italy. I have not ever been to the other ports of call. Greg has not been to Italy or any of the ports of call we will be visiting. We have not done any research yet into what it is we want to do, as we just signed up for the cruise recently.

I remember seeing the leaning tower in Pisa, in addition to all the other buildings and shops in the area. I haven't been inside the leaning tower because it was closed last time I went (they were fixing structural issues with the tower). Greg is very interested in seeing the tower. We might be interested in joining you in taking the train to Lucca and Pisa. Is there a deadline we need to let you know by? We understand why you want the late seating. Greg and I would probably prefer to finish up dinner earlier so we can do other shipboard activities before heading to bed. We will probably skip dinner at the MDR on the day we are in Florence, since we are in port until 7pm.

Thanks for the information on Cartagena. We definitely would appreciate any guidance you or anyone else could provide regarding Rome or the ports we will be visiting on this cruise. We are just beginning to research what is available. Thanks for the offer on ideas of what to see in Rome. I will send you an email today.

I am thinking about putting our name on the main roll call thread for this cruise. Are you all getting any useful information or perhaps finding opportunities for non-ship sponsored excursions? I really would like to read all the messages but I may get tired of looking at them after the first 1000 or so.

Thanks in advance for all the wonderful info and meetup ideas you have provided! CC is wonderful!

Don & Greg -

There is alot of useful information on the main roll call - definitely take a look. I think most of the private tours are now full, but new ones may continue to pop up.

I arranged for private tours in Livorno and Toulon and posted them to the main board and they filled up within a couple days.

Agreed - there is a lot to read! Good luck!

We are Mike and Wayne from Fort Lauderdale. We arrive in Rome on the 25th and are staying at the Second floor B&B across from the Coliseum. We have cruised many times but this is our first transatlantic. I hear that the Equinox is a great vessel to take the crossing on. We shall see. We are open to meeting other couples for meals and seeing the sights. See you on board.

Welcome Mike and Wayne. We also are looking forward to Equinox which appears to be a gorgeous ship. Our previous Celebrity cruises were both on Constellation - also a beauty.

Thanks for the welcome Castabrook.

We think lunch or dinner would be great; let us know when you know more details and we can see if there are any good times to meet up. It is a little far out for us to know what is going on for sure. We might also be interested in being transported to the ship from Hotel Artemide, but we are unsure since we have not booked our hotel yet.

This is our first time in Rome so if you or any others want to tour the major sites together we would definitely be up for it.

Look forward to seeing you all soon! :)

Greg and I are wondering if we need to be concerned about how gay friendly the hotel is that we pick in Rome. It seems like we would be limiting our options if we try searching on the internet for a hotel that advertises that they are gay friendly (if there are any at all).

Thanks for any info you can provide regarding this.

Don & Greg -

Jeff and I have been lucky to travel all over the world, staying in hotels in all price and star ranges. We have never had an issue of feeling uncomfortable or unwelcome. In general, when I pick a hotel, I use a site like www.tripadvisor.com to find a property that gets high marks for treating their guests well overall.

There are lots of us from the roll call staying at the Hotel Sonya (Rick Steves' recommended). Other hotels that seem popular with the group are the Hotel Golden, Hotel Artemide and the Albergo del Senato.

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the assurance. I have referred to Trip Advisor and started picking out lots of good possibilities and then thought about whether being gay would be an issue, especially with independent inn keepers. It helps that there are over 1200 hotels on Trip Advisor that helps me make a choice.

Hotel Sonya appears to be booked up for the weekend for the cruise at the moment. However, we are trying to get into a hotel that is near where the majority of Cruise Critic members will be staying at the weekend before the cruise.

Thanks for the reference to the updated passenger list. I printed it out and will refer to it as well. I am in the process of reading the messages in the main roll call. Right now, I have finished reading/skimming the first 1000 messages. I am hoping to be finished by the end of this week. If not, I should definitely be finished by the middle of next week. I will be posting a message once I get through with reading all the messages, just so I am in the know when it comes to what everybody is talking about.

Tony and I would like to join in the transportation to the ship, we are staying at Hotel Artemides as well. Dinner Sunday night would be a fun way to kick off the cruise!

Was thinking we should organize a "gay night" at Murano or something too!

Greg and I would be interested in knowing more details about the dinner. We are hoping to be able to make it; we should be able to if we are not away on a tour.

Yes, we would also be interested in doing a gay night at one of the specialty restaurants.

TripAdvisor is a great site--I picked a hotel that is somewhat lower ranked than Hotel Sonya but still pretty good--it is called Hotel Doria. If you know anything about this hotel, please let me know. We may end up changing this hotel if something better opens up.

I love the work that the cruisers on the main roll call have done to make this cruise an experience to look forward to even more--I can say this goes for the list you mentioned as well.

Since you have travelled to many places, I would like some advice from you. Please email me at rducruisers at yahoo dot com so I can get your email address and reply back to you, if you don't mind.

Thanks for recommending that I read the roll call! I got lots of useful info, even early on in the postings. Unfortunately, as I was reading all of those posts and pasting some ideas into MS Word, my computer decided that it wanted to crash. We are hoping that Greg can recover the computer and that file. We shall see.

I happen to notice that you are helping someone organize tours on the main roll call. Do you know if there is any more space on those tour(s)? If so, we would be interested in joining that group (or your group, if you are one big group). I noticed you had one opening for 30 min and then someone else replied--guess I should have read faster. If you have any ideas regarding other tour operators or guides that would be good, please let me know as well.

Once again, as many many others have told you, a big THANK YOU for your help. You have provided lots of great info! :)

Yes - the board can be crazy quick sometimes!

Congrats on picking a hotel. Now we just need November to get here!

If anyone hasn't paid attention, Celebrity has opened Fire and Police and Military prices on our cruise. Some of the discounts are substantial. Rito and I moved from our inside room to a deck 8 balcony. Some of the base prices have come down somewhat as well. Since we're outside of final payment date, you can either upgrade or get a refund of any difference you catch.

I am looking for someone who is organizing a transfer that evening from FCO to Central Rome hotels and has space for 2 more people. If no one has organized this transfer yet and there is interest in sharing a cab from FCO to Central Rome at this time, I would not mind setting up a reservation for a group.

If there are people who will be taking the train instead into town that evening, I would be interested in hearing from you too. We might consider taking the train with a large group of CC members.

Please email me at rducruisers at yahoo dot com if you are interested in sharing a cab or catching a train on the evening of November 25.

Thanks,

I am organizing a tour in Provence and need one more couple (or group of 2 people) to fill our 8 person minivan. We will be touring Aix en Provence and Cassis. The description of this tour follows:

Aix en Provence

It is while driving along the Mirabeau Court, decorated of fountains and edged of 17th and 18th centuries private mansions, that you will enter the heart of Aix in Provence. You will discover the architectural wealth of the city while driving by the 4 dolphins Fountain, the Preachers fountain, the Albertas Square, the city hall square, the Cardeurs Square, and

the Saint Sauveur Cathedral. Then, you will be able to join the Cezanne’s workshop*, small pavilion of the Lauves, before coming back to enjoy the shady squares of the painter’s city. (Markets on Tuesday morning)

* Entrance fee not included--cost 5 euros per person

Cassis

The Gineste and the Crests roads will lead you to the outstanding site of Cap Canaille, from where you will appreciate the exceptional view on the bay of Cassis and the Gardiole Massif. Then, you will board on a maritime tour to discover the calanques* and once back, free time to stroll in the streets of the small fishing port of Cassis.

*3 calanques cruise fee not included--cost 13 euros per person

We will also be stopping off at a market, where hopefully we can look and possibly find souvenirs to purchase.

The cost of this tour is 590 euros for 8 people, which works out to about 74 euros per person + 5 euros (Cezanne workshop) + 13 euros (Calanques cruise) = 92 euros per person plus tips.

Please let me know if you are interested in this tour by emailing me at rducruisers at yahoo dot com.

If there is availability through the tour operator and enough CC members are interested, I will look into getting a second minivan for our group.

Hi everyone,

We have found a tour operator for the Azores, in case you are interested. There are two different tours being offered; you can feel free to choose the one you would like to go on. Due to time constraints it would not be possible to go on both tours.

Details are listed below:

Tour 1- Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and Caldeira Velha. Sete Cidades means 7 cities and is actually 7 craters. You will see several of them, each one unique. The most popular view is that from the top of the crater where you can see the twin lakes, blue and green. We will travel along the top of the crater and stop at sites along the way for pictures, then down to the village. There will be a brief stop and then on to see some of the smaller lakes. From there, we will travel along the south coast to Lagoa do Fogo( fire lake). This is a very large water filled crater, an amazing view! Then the Caldeira Velha( a warm waterfall inside a reserve park with a small hot spring.) Tour time approximately 4-5 hours. After the tour a "farm lunch will be offered for those who wish to experience a home-cooked full Portuguese meal including appetizers of local cheeses, sausage and fresh pineapple grown on the island. The main courses will be a fish and meat dish with local vegetables and salads and a typical Portuguese dessert. Local wines and water will also be included in the meal. Total cost 60 euros per person, lunch included.

Tour 2- Lagoa do Fogo, caldeira velha and Furnas. This tour will begin with the trip to Lagoa do Fogo(Firelake) and Caldeira Velha,(a warm waterfall inside a reserve park with a small hot spring),along the south coast, then on to Villa Franca, a small village along the way with stops at several viewpoints. Once we arrive in Furnas a stop will be made at the Furnas Lake and then into the village to see the hot springs. We will also go into the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden. We will travel back along the North shore so that you can see some different sites along the way. Total time of tour approximately 5 hours depending on how much time is spent in the garden. Total price includes lunch and a 5 euro entrance fee to the Garden- 65 euros per person.

The good news about these tours is that there is great availability for these tours. We merely need to fill vans (i.e. have multiples of 8 passengers sign up) so the lowest prices can be offered to everyone.

For now, I will take names of all couples (or pairs of people) who are interested. If enough people sign up to fill multiple vans, I may ask for volunteers to be the group lead for each van. More details will be following over the coming weeks.

As of right now, I have no people interested in Tour #1 and 4 people interested in Tour #2. Greg and I will be on Tour #2.

If you are interested or have any questions, please feel free to contact me at rducruisers at yahoo dot com.

Hello guys!

Hope everybody is doing well. I've been insanely busy at work. This summer I've been away from home for eight weeks. Brian was not happy at all, but he is happier now after a week vacation in Hawaii.

Don and Greg, it will be a pleasure to sit with you for dinner. I'll send you an email so we can make the proper arrangements.

I can't believe how fast this year has gone by so far. Very shortly we'll be on our cruise! :D

Wish everybody a great weekend!

We have just discovered this roll call for the cruise.

We look forward to meeting you guys.

We seem to have caused a stir by booking the Penthouse. No doubt we will see you all there at least once during this sailing.

Hi Don, can you let us know the tour operator. We have 7 people so we would not be able to join you unless we sit on some laps :), but the tour sounds great. We'd like to get our own mini van setup to do the same or something similar. Your help is greatly appreciated. I'll send you an email as well from mhhorowi at yahoo dot com

We have sailed with each other before. I think it might have been the TA in 2004. We have been on so many, that i get them all mixed up in my head these days. This Old Scotsman brain lets me down at times.

As you will soon gather....both Marc and I post and it can get confusing who is writing which post!

Yes David - we have!!! And it was the TA on Constellation in 2004. I didn't even think of that when you mentioned being an old Scotsman... (Old is figurative!!!)... Of course I think you lived on the east coast then, rather than Tucson...

Right after we got back from the TA, I was at Oracle OpenWorld and picked up the conference daily paper, to see Marc listed as I believe "Consultant of the Year".... Another small world....

Looking forward to seeing the Penthouse and what a great idea for a fundraiser. Our friends Sue & John had one on the Constellation TA.... So I'll get to compare.

Jeff and I will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary on this trip. Time has flown!

See you on board.
