Keep Reservation or Rebook with another line? Re: Smoking

DVC Sadie

Recommended Posts

My dh and I booked our summer cruise with Celebrity (again) and now found out about the new (to us) smoking rules aboard Celebrity.

I do not smoke in our home so not smoking in the cabin would not be a problem for me at all. The big non smoking issue for me is not being able to smoke in the casino. Silly but true.

I look at this in two different ways. It would be a great time to quit but I am not sure if trying to quit would be difficult for my dh to endure.

The other option is to rebook our cruise with a different cruise line.

Just looking for some feedback. TIA

Hi Sadie. :)

You mentioned not smoking in your cabin, if you have a cabin with a verandah were you aware that smoking is not allowed there as well?

Unfortunately, IMHO if the enjoyment of your cruise will be impacted in large part by your inability to smoke in the Casino, then perhaps X is not for you.

If this is not your first cruise with Celebrity, the smoking policy apparently was not enough of an issue that you even noticed it. Perhaps you just never made it to the casino that cruise, and are planning on doing so this time. Yes, no smoking in the casino at any time. If this is a deal breaker for you, you are so advised. However, from I've read on these boards, many smokers do not find it overly onerous to take a ciggie break, heading up one deck (if memory serves) and out to the promenade. No lectures about trying to quit, but I've heard of others have taken advantage of a Celebrity cruise to jumpstart their efforts.

Hi,:) it is all about prioirities and what is most important to you. If not

being able to have a smoke while gambling is going to impact your

cruise so much that you won't be happy and not have a good time?

Then the answer would be to cancel and rebook. And I also want

mention the balcony thing. No smoking is allowed out there either.

You asked for feedback:)

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I have cruised before and on Celebrity a lot but the last time we cruised with them was a year and a half yrs ago doing the Medi cruise out of Rome and smoking in the casino was allowed at that time and also on the balcony.

Part of the problem in deciding what to do is the fact that we were doing the cruisetour and traveling from Vancouver to Calgary which was my dh's favorite part of the trip.

Does anyone know who else offers cruise tours? TIA

Yes, no smoking on the verandas/balconies either. That's the very reason we are booking with Celebrity for our first and only cruise. We preferred Holland and/or Princess for their iteniraries(Alaska) but dh will not tolerate smoke. I'm the one who wants to splurge for a veranda (not dh) and I would hear no end to it if smoke started wafting over to our veranda. DH would ruin our cruise with the complaining. :D

This is an FYI...IF by chance you find neighbors who don't think the rules apply? Please call Guest Relations about it. That is of course if you don't

want to say something to them first~some folks don't like confrontations. But that is just my own bit of advice;)

i think royal offers cruise tours, and you can smoke on your balcony, not sure about the casino, but i think they have a smoking area..........
You may smoke in the casino on Royal except for formal nights.

I just got back from a b2b of 28 days on Constellation. I am a smoker and did not find the smoking policy to be a hardship. There is a nice area on the 10th deck for smokers with both tables and loungers available. Spent many hours ther over the cruises and made some good friends. There is also smoking allowed on half of the back deck on 10. As for the casino it was not a problem = my money never lasted that long! The casino is on the 4th deck and right at the end of the casino is a door to the other smoking section. Just takes a few minutes away. Enjoy your cruise!:o

As a former smoker, the worse thing I did was start smoking and the best thing I did was quiting. Your clothes stink, you stink, and your lungs are black. 9Also makes your teeth turn yellow and causes gum disease) Who knows which cig. wll push you over the edge to lung CA. Quiting was not that hard. Just get rid of the cigs and don't buy any more. Lung disease is a horrible, painful disease, and it can metatisize to your brain. Do you want to be lying in bed with a diaper on and your brain turned to mush. Don't think it won't happen to you. I am a former hospice nurse and I saw what happened to people that smoke. Also, if you don't get lung CA, throat, mouth CA are horribly painful too, also, heart disease and stroke are more prevalent in smokers. Just quit! I used the generic of Zyban (Wellbutrin) to help me quit smoking. It works for a lot of people. Good luck.

Also Champix is a good one too. After taking this for 2 weeks, I'm now on Day #3 of being a non-smoker :) and I have no desire to smoke, no craving... I can't believe that I'm actually able to quit after smoking without a break for 30 years. I'm 43, and I'm glad I quit the habit before it quit me. I was so scared of quitting...I can't believe how easy it is!!

DVC Sadie, if I were you, I'd just quit completely before and not during the cruise. I'm so happy that I'm not a slave to the stinking cigarettes anymore.

I echo the comments of earlier poster. We booked Celebrity primarily because of their policy against smoking in the casino and smoking on the verandahs. We have not enjoyed the casino on other cruises because of the smoking and had our balcony experience hampered by smoking neighbors. I am hopeful that Celebrity will REALLY enforce the no smoking on verandahs policy with vigor. I have relatives who smoke and when they travel with us to non-smoking hotels, they always want to be able to smoke on the balcony of their room. If you feel the same way, I would encourage you to rebook on another line.

Thanks everyone for the input.:D

For those of you who are cruising on Celebrity for the first time because of the no-smoking policies have a great trip and if I happen to be on the same cruise don't worry because I do not smoke in unauthorized areas be it cruising or landlocked.

Those of you who are encouraging me to quit, thank you.

Now all I have to do is think really hard and make my decision before final payment is due.

My goodness, the OP didn't ask whether or not smoking is bad for your health, some of these responses seem a little over the line. Anyway --- back to the topic ---- I think the OP should think long and hard about changing to another cruise line. If she is going to be unhappy without smoking in the casino --- or perhaps on her balcony --- she is not going to enjoy her trip as much as she should. My DH used to be a smoker, and he really would not have enjoyed a ship that limited his smoking as severely as Celebrity does. Thank goodness, he has now been off cigarettes for over 2 years, but I remember how he felt. Other cruise lines are very nice as well as Celebrity, we like Princess as much or possibly even a little bit more because their ships are livelier. Anyway, vacation time and money are too precious to waste on a trip that has red flags from the start. I'm not sure I'd recommend quitting shortly before a vacation, either --- it was very difficult for DH for quite a while, but he got through it.

From your screen name I guess you belong to DVC. I think their smoking policies are more restrictive than on Celebrity--while you cannot smoke around the pools at Disney, one side of the pool deck allows smoking. Granted you lose the casino, but if you are fine with the restrictions at Disney, you should be fine on Celebrity.

If I had asked the question and got the exact same replies as the OP, I wouldn't be offended, and I don't think the OP is. No one seems to be jumping all over her, but offering advice and some "medical advice" that surely seems well intentioned; which is how it appears the OP has taken it. Op also seems very reasonable and not trying to see how she can "get away with it." All in all this is one of the nicest, most helpful Smoking Threads I've seen.

It's Chantix and it is a miracle drug! I also could not believe I was quitting after almost 40 yrs and it seemed so easy! I bought a thousand dollar Louis Vuitton with my cig money I saved. I call it my puffin no more purse! Try it you'll like it........
