Everyone keeps saying that it is your TA that gives them to you -- not really true

we have gotten them 3 or 4 times -- and each time i asked our ta if she gave them to us -- her answer - NO

some people here have said that the coupon books came from hal through a special promotion when you booked your cruise -- we have never booked a cruise through a special promotion as the special promotions are never offered for the SA cabins

we have no idea how we got them

SO - you can not get them from anyone on the ship

We're supposed to be getting one (from our TA). Anything good inside it?

Not hardly, as far as I'm concerned. You have to buy something to get something. One coupon I do use is the 10% off an order of flowers.

Another coupon gives an additional 15 minutes when you purchase an Internet plan. Problem with that is, if you purchase a plan the first day you get bonus minutes. The two couldn't be combined on my last cruise.

Ruth, I've always gotten my bonus minutes for signing up first day, then I usually bring my coupon for additional minutes down in the evening and get credited that also......nowhere does it say they are mutually exclusive and I've never had a problem with it (last two cruises - Veendam and Noordam)....

Thanks KK! And to CJcruzer too, I'll have to try that. Other than the internet minutes and maybe the phone discount, I guess I'll save 80 cents or so on a grande coffee drink. I guess it's better than nothing.

Where are you going to try to get it from? Your TA?

We don't have a TA so I don't think there is anywhere to try to get one.... for us.

We've cruised with HAL three times (a seven day and two B2B cruises) and only used a T.A. on the third cruise which was last month. The only time we received coupon books was on that T.A. booked cruise (2 books actually! :))

I don't know for sure who sent them though, :o and all we used were the two bingo coupons.

My TA for this sailing was the one operated by a certain large Houston-based airline that's in the process of merging with United. Besides matching the HAL website rate and giving me air miles and more air miles (a double-mile bonus booking), I was promised a coupon book. It's hardly the reason why I booked with this TA, mainly it was the ease of booking since they had our info from a previous cruise, plus the miles. Personally I would have preferred an OBC, but I'll take whatever "freebie" I can get ;)

I thought I had gotten the benefit of both on previous cruises, too, but couldn't remember specifically. I do know on my recent Volendam cruise the Internet Manager would absolutely not allow both to be used. I did squint and read the fine print. There was something that could have been interpreted as she did.

She was at least relatively new on the job, so could have been mistaken. Or, previous Internet Managers could have been comfortable enough in their job to have let it go to have a happy customer. Or, there could have been a change in policy.

I don't know the reason, and didn't need the extra minutes after all.

Sorry, I have to ask...

Not all cpoupons in life are "come in, take something for free and leave" Most are "Save $0.50 here" "Save $1.00 there" and in this case you're getting things worth quite a lot of money, you just have to purchase something to get the benefit.

Sure, most people probably don't use the whole book. However we had one on our Nieuw Amsterdam trip and saved around $10.00 between the laundry and coffee coupons.

 Funny, I didn't see an "ask" in your reply. Was there a question?

The question was "Anything good inside it?" I stand by my reply of "Not hardly". IMO saving $10 out of a book with a value of over $300 constitutes a "not hardly" There is very little value in that book.

We use the book the few times we get it and find it very handy. I have no problem buying the admiral pack and getting a deal at the Pinnacle Grill. if the NA hadn't had NORO, I probably would have used the spa coupon too.

I believe the coupons are offered by HAL for certain booking times to the TA's as promotion. It was offered when we booked our cruise on the Maasdam but not on the Prinsendam. I'll take one anytime :)

Why don't the HAL PCC's give them to their clients?

We do all our booking directly with HAL and have never received one.

Why, I wonder?

Since you have a PCC, you should wonder that to him or her ;)

DBA is an HAL employee..... I 'wondered' it to him seeing he posted in this thread.

I have a strong idea the PCC's (seeing they don't give them to their clients) don't even know what these coupon books are.

My understanding is that the coupon books are part of a promotion package that HAL gives TA's with package fares. Our last included a very good fare (ie. lower that the HAL website fare), the coupon book, Pinnacle dinner for 2 and $50 pp OBC.

We have had similar packages, but a 3 bottle Navigator wine package or a bottle of wine in addition.

Sometimes included is HAL air, but sometimes not.

I think these packages are for TA's who sign on to book "groups" ( a certain number of cabins).

Hope this helps.

we haven't used any of the coupons in the books

The one I'd be most likely to use would be free Internet minutes IF they were combinable with the extra minutes we get for buying the package the first day.

I might use one or two of the others.
