verycanny Posted May 11, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2011 Hi, First time cruiser's here and one of the ports will be Rome (P&O - Ventura in July this year). We do not want to do the official excursion but would prefer to make our own way to the city centre. Anybody aware of the best way to do this? train, bus, taxi? there will be 4 of us and rough idea of the cost. Cheers!
Rare Keith1010 Posted May 11, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 11, 2011 Hi welcome to Cruise Critic. Many of us would recommend the train to get from the port of call into Rome. There is a wealth of information on the Italy Port of Call Board. Following is a link to that board. I would post your question there as well as read some of the information already posted. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=595 Keith
KirkNC Posted May 11, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 11, 2011 Take the train using the BIRG ticket. It costs 9 euros/pp. Kirk

jocap Posted May 12, 2011 #5 Share Posted May 12, 2011 Hi, VC....there will be a shuttle bus from Ventura to the port gates. Follow the crowd, who'll all be heading towards the station, in a straight line along the pavement.... When you've bought your ticket, you have to validate it at a small machine, to show that you're travelling then....again, watch the crowd, and ask fellow passengers. Watch your bags and wallets....be very careful of money, cards and papers- best leave your passport in the safe, as an EU pp is valuable....watch in the crowded areas in Rome. I'm on Ventura soon, so I'll look after her for you! ;) Enjoy! :) Jo.

wcook Posted May 13, 2011 #7 Share Posted May 13, 2011 The Ron in Rome website has exactly the info you need, step by step directions, pictures, etc. Unfortunately, cruisecritic won't allow us to link to his page on Crusing? Come to Rome for the Day. But you should be able to find it.

janina Posted May 15, 2011 #9 Share Posted May 15, 2011 Take the train, but make absolutely sure to reserve your tickets in advance.
Ronnie1a Posted May 21, 2011 #10 Share Posted May 21, 2011 The trick is to get to the train station from the ship. Very few and very expensive cabs-almost impossible to grab one when everybody disembarks. If the line offers a shuttle-and some do-take it. The train is like a commute train with lots of stops. Do not know if you can make a advance res. Try the Trenatalia web site.
