Noise level in Marina MDR

I have observed a high noise level in the center of the "R" ships dining rooms.

Reading the majority of the reviews there has been no mention of this problem on the Marina. Is it possible to carry on a conversation without raising voices on the new ship?

The Dining Room on the Marina, having a much higher ceiling height than the R ships, is divided in into several asymetric levels. The center of the room is the lowest of these.

Although I'm certain that you could find a ramp down into each section, most people use the two and three step staircases, which are scattered about, for convenience sake.

Naturally, older and infirm people tend to request seating that does not require use of those stairs, so the center of the room is usually very quiet.

Sometimes it is just the 'luck of the draw".

You may have the misfortune to be seated next to a larger table of 4 to 6 people who are having a "good time". Often this is in direct proportion to amount of alcoholic beverages consumed during cocktail hour and continuing during dinner; as the dinner progresses, their volume steadily increases. They may be oblivious to you or anyone else around them. In that case you may have to raise your voice to be heard (or move) :)

In general, however, it is quieter (and less busy, IMO) than the R MDRs.

We have spent very little time in the MDR for a number of reasons.

Much quieter, much more enjoyable on Marina. One of my dislikes of the R ships (a plus for Marina on my yet to vote on the preference poll) is the noise in the GDR. On the R ships, especially in the center raised area, it could get very loud. The ceiling which reflects sound is close and the room is large. On our last R ship cruise we traveled with two couples and dined with them several nights in the GDR to relate the days adventures to each other. There were several times at our table of six we could only direct conversation to those immediately beside each of us. The irony of a noisy room is that as the noise level rises the voices raise in volume to compete and so ...

Several times on Marina we enjoyed a table of eight and even with other large tables around us the ambient noise was not distracting. As others have posted it can depend on where you are seated and the amount of lively conversation around you but in general, Marina's GDR despite its larger size will be quieter.

I really enjoy the Cognac Service on Oceania.

You'll also find an extensive selection of noble wines by the glass if Cognac seems too potent.

We enjoyed sitting up in the forward alcoves as opposed to out in the main area. However, loud tables can certainly affect anyone anywhere. The closer you get to an 8 top or larger, the more likely you will find louder people by virtue of talking across the table.

Overall, the GDR was much quieter than the specialty dining areas. One exception was definitely The Terrace in the evening....probably the secret gem on the whole ship for quiet dining.

Looking forward to giving Riviera a spin next year ;) I'll take Oceania noise over any other any day of the week! Hopefully, they won't have changed much at all!

Think of us, the first time that you enter that gorgeous Dining Room!

By the way, there are a series of very interesting paintings, hanging on your right, just as you enter.

I'd be fascinated to know your opinion of them-

Must have missed your original post. We embark June 21 on the Marina. Where and when can we enjoy this service?

They will warm a cognac for you at any hour of the day or night that you prefer to drink one. In the Grand Dining Room' date=' in all of the specialty restaurants and any of the bars (although I must confess to never having ordered a cognac at the pool bar).

Many of the passengers rush off to catch the evening entertainments, so those of us who linger over a liquor are treated like royalty. ;)

Hint: tip your Sommelier early and generously........you will reap [i']fabulous[/i] rewards.

The first time I entered the Grand Dining Room, I absolutely was so overwhelmed by its beauty that I stopped walking to gape in admiration, and the person seating us had to wait for me to recover and actually continue following her to our table.

I enjoyed most of the artwork, and I adored all the blown glass (glass is my personal joy) but the Miros hanging in the small corridor leading to the "purple bar", aka the Casino Bar, had me gasping in joy.:) I also made a point of using the Lalique staircase as much as possible, stopping on the landing to pose for all my (imaginary) admirers!

Welcome back girl! :D

How long have you been home? Are you exhausted or exhilarated at this point?

Knowing you and Gerry, I'll bet that you made the most of it.

Btw, you never answered the question that I posed earlier -did you like the "white sheet" paintings in the dining room?
