Celebrity compared to Royal

I've been on a few RCI cruises and was wondering how Celebrity compares? I know that they are sister cruise lines but was trying to figure out if I would enjoy both the same. I've been on RCI's Navigator, Mariner, Liberty, Freedom, and Allure. So which Celebrity ships would I need to look at to get the same or better experience. Thanks

I don't know if I'm really qualified to give an opinion. I don't have NEAR the cruising experience as a lot of the posters here, but here goes..

I've cruised RCI 6 times, Rhapsody 3 times, Voyager 3 times. Celebrity 2 times, Galaxy once and Equinox once. Both of our Celebrity cruises have been our favorite. Celebrity seems to have taken the best of RCI and turned it up a notch and dropped the worst.

IMHO....Celebrity seems to be more subdued (not boring) and maybe a little more upscale (not stuffy). We live about 45 minutes from Galveston and if Celebrity sailed from there they would be our first choice. We like RCI but LOVE THE NON-SMOKING BALCONIES AND NO LOUD ANNOUNCEMENTS DURING THE DAY!!!!!!

"So which Celebrity ships would I need to look at to get the same or better experience?"

IMHO the answer is 'any'. But everyone has different tastes and is looking for something different on their vacation. I like the excellent service, good food, and overall 'elegant without being stuffy' atmosphere on Celebrity. To some, the 'elegance' comes across as a bit boring; to many, like myself, it is peaceful and relaxing, with just enough partying to keep it interesting.

How would everyone rate the food currently on Celebrity? I have sailed on Celebrity 5 times, but the last time was in 2002. As I remember the food was quite good back then. Last year I went on RCL and I thought the food in the main dining room was not good. In contrast I thought the food in the Breakfast and Lunch Buffets was quite good. I am looking at B2B cruises on Celebrity for this coming winter. Please help.

I like RCL and Celebrity. They are operated by the same company. They are very similar. MY kids and grandkids love the Royal big ships with tons of activities. I prefer the smaller more quiet ships like the Century. However, I wouldn't hesitate to book on a Royal ship except the Oasis. That's just too big...and I'm walking slower as I get older. You will enjoy either line.

I sailed on NCL once. It was just fair. Compared to Royal/Celebrity, it is a step down. It is usually cheaper. The less you pay, the less you get.

If you are traveling minus kids and can afford it, try Azamara. Nice, casual, small and charming.

HAL is okay. Lots of old people. Yes I am old. Most HAL cruisers make me look young. Not always a bad thing.

I sailed on the Eclipse in February and the Constellation in May. Prior to that Royal Caribbean 7 times from the fall of 2007.

There are pluses and minuses with both of them but I think I would give Celebrity the edge for our purposes if all things were more or less equal.

Food:

Felt the food was a notch better better on Celebrity with quality and choices in the MDR. Their "always available" menu has appetizers, salads, entrees, dessert. Good things like shrimp cocktail, escargot, creme brulee. Royal's just has an entree. Royal's Windjammer had better selection than the Lido on Celebrity in the evenings. Royal's selection includes several dishes that are being served in the MDR. Celebrity's did not. A grill that makes fresh hamburgers/hot dogs, plus b-q ribs and chicken, nachos and other things on Celebrity's pool deck. Access to coffee, hot/cold tea/hot chocolate, lemonade, etc. 24 hours in the Lido. On Royal when the WJ closes, only hot tea/coffee/hot chocolate available in the Promenade. Royal's Promenade Cafe better than Celebrity's counterpart.

Cabin amenities: Bathroom had individual toiletries on Celebrity vs. a one-size-fits-all dispenser in the shower for shampoo and conditioner and bars of soap. Celebrity had shampoo, conditioner, shower cap, body lotion, a container of cotton balls and q-tips. Felt the shower was larger on Celebrity. Both had doors and not clinging curtains.

Chocolates on the pillow at night on Celebrity. No towel animals, though, on the Constellation but did have some on the Eclipse.

Bedside reading lamp on the Constellation was worthless. Good "tensor" light on Royal. Balcony a little larger on Royal but both contained the same furnishings--two chairs, little table. Closet storage better on Royal as there were no shelves in the closets on the Constellation or the Eclipse. Eclipse had storage in a cabinet over the bed which was difficult to get to without climbing on the bed. Bed comfort the same for me.

Casino: Larger on Royal with lower minimums on the tables some of the time. Mostly $10 on the blackjack table on Celebrity vs. $6 on Royal. Slots seemed very tight on Celebrity but they weren't that loose on Royal either. No smoking in the Celebrity casino.

Shows: A push

Loyalty program: If you are Diamond/Diamond Plus on Royal, you are Elite on Celebrity--no difference in perks. Celebrity's nightly happy hour is 5-7 p.m. but had mixed drinks. Royal's is 5:00 to 8:00 with only wine/champagne/soda for Diamonds, mixed drinks for Diamond Plus. Celebrity passes hors d'ouvres whereas Royal sets out a selection for Diamond Plus, trail mix for Diamonds. I liked Royal's deal better.

Celebrity had a special dining area for breakfast. Royal has on some of their ships but is sometimes limited to Diamond + and/or suites. Only went to Celebrity's once for a bloody so I can't comment on it much. We did utilize it on the NOS on Royal almost every morning and you could order off the menu. Not sure if they had freebee drinks but did have specialty coffee. Celebrity's was set up like a restaurant whereas Royal just filled long tables as you came in.

Elite has 90 minutes free internet. Royal's is less, can't remember how much. Elite has free laundry for 20 pieces, free dry cleaning for one item (suit is one item), free pressing for one item. This is per person, not cabin. Both have $5 match play coupons for the casino. Perks definitely better on Celebrity for Diamond at least, which is what we are even with the limited happy hour.

Service: About the same both in the dining room and elsewhere.

Odds and Ends:

Library on Celebrity much better. Only one announcement per day on Celebrity. Royal has several pushing bingo/art auctions. No sign out of towels on Celebrity. Daily news re-cap available on Celebrity at Guest Relations. Internet seemed a little better on Celebrity but still not that great.

No smoking on balconies or in the casino which is a major plus for most, a minus for some. Several designated smoking areas available for smokers around the ship.

Fewer "bells and whistles" on Celebrity like ice skating/shows, rock climbing wall, flow rider. Cannot comment on fitness/spa/beauty shop because did not use them.

Shops appeared about the same. I'm not a shopper.

In several ports, Celebrity set up a "reception" area at the gang plank with a tent, sofa, chairs, plants, which was nice to wait for people or visit with people who were on other ships in port at the same time. They had cold water (once hot chocolate when it was a cold weather port) and cold wash cloths when you returned to the ship which was a nice touch.

It boils down to what you want. If you are on the young side and/or with kids, probably Royal would be better as they market more to families and have more active things to do both day and night. Their fares are less expensive.

We choose our cruises based on itinerary and price for the most part. We have no kids/grand kids so that doesn't factor in. There is nothing on either line that would tilt the playing field one way or the other.

FYI, I am a smoker and the stricter smoking policy on Celebrity does not discourage me from cruising with them. A minor inconvenience but not a deal breaker by a long shot.

Any specific questions, feel free to e-mail me at whitlock@alumni.utexas.net.

I was skeptical about X thinking it would be snobby, old people (sorry).... Was I wrong!! It was our best cruise ever! We picked the Summit repositioning cruise from San Juan. Loved being able to sit around the pool without being "harrassed" by waiters and listening to announcements. Enjoyed the smoke free casino, pillow chocolates, lotion etc in the bathroom, cold facecloths upon returning to ship from port.... (I know I have forgotton something). We really enjoyed the food and entertainment. We liked it so much we booked again next year and I'm trying to figure out when we can fit in a Soltice class cruise. We really do enjoy RC but like others have said, it's just a "notch" above. :D

Tucker in Texas, that's pretty accurate. We all agree! Don't laugh, but just smile...on most Celebrity ships we've been on, they've also provided umbrellas to passengers when it was raining. :)

Forgot about that. Actually, they were in the cabin when we embarked and not handed out just when it rained. Mercifully only needed them once in 12 days cruising the Baltics and that was only for a couple of hours in the morning in Tallin.

I'm sure I have forgotten other things, too.

We just got back from our first Celebrity cruise (Century to Alaska) after 4 RCCL cruises. For activities, we give the nod to RCCL - we're both active, and love the skating, surf pools, etc. For a subdued, low-key vacation, the nod goes to Celebrity. It was a very relaxing week!

Food-wise, the nod definitely goes to Celebrity. It actually reminded me a lot of my first cruise with RCCL, back on the Sovereign in 1993 - I swear RCCL's food was better then. The Century had consistently high-quality food. In fact, we stopped eating in the dining room for dinner because we found the food in Islands Cafe to be just as good, and eating in the cafe enabled us to stay up on deck and watch the scenery. We've never skipped dinner in the MDR before.

The Century's spaghetti carbonara the first night was to die for. In contrast, our waiter on the Freedom of the Seas last summer discouraged us from the pasta because it wasn't very good. We also loved the stir fry and pasta stations, as well as the sandwich bar (with fresh cut roast beef...yum!). They make their own ice cream on board, so I decided it was my duty to test it each day. Guava sorbet, after eight ice cream, peach/almond frozen yogurt, lemon/raspberry sorbet ... the list just goes on. It was all excellent!

I had a waffle the first breakfast, which was delicious until I realized that the AquaSpa's breakfasts could keep me eating remotely healthily. Fresh papaya, a yogurt/granola parfait with mint and berries, and Valencia orange bread with mango and apricot sauces. It was delicious!

Fun, active cruises = RCCL. Yummy food and a low-key environment = Celebrity. We'll gladly cruise either in the future! :D

As my signature shows, have done RCI, Celebrity, HAL and Princess (so far ;)) In order best to worst:

Celebrity

RCI

Princess

Hal

We too were loyal Royals at first......but the desire for some fresh itineraries saw us booking other lines. We really cruise more for the ports than the ship. That said, I want a nice experience onboard too.

As others have said, Celebrity just "took it up a notch" as we sailed on Solstice when she was only 6 months old. Still had the "new car" smell :D

Princess was our last cruise (April) and it was ok - but didnt get that "glad you are here" feeling. HAL cruise was boring as far as the ship. Period.

Can't wait to get on Equinox this fall...... Europe, lemon martinis and Tuscan Grille - yes !

My family and I just returned from the June 10th Infinity cruise to Alaska. We have sailed NCL and Carnival, and I can assure you that Celebrity is far superior to either of those lines. Everything on our ship was top notch and far exceeded our expectations.........stateroom, food, service, amenities, entertainment, everything! We will certainly cruise Celebrity for all future vacations. Never have we experienced such exceptional customer service from every staff member. Everyone was polite, professional, personable, and sincere from the captain to the housekeeping staff. Over the course of the week, the cruise director, activities director, teen club counselors, waiter, assistant waiter, and our room steward became like extended family members, and it was very hard to say our goodbyes when it came time to disembark We have twin teenage daughters, and they also had a blast on this cruise. We all agreed that it was the best vacation we have ever experienced. If you book with Celebrity, you will not be disappointed.

I was a real Royal fan also and then decided to do a Celebrity cruise in 2009 for my 50th birthday on The Solstice. My first impression was that the ship was a lot more formal and I missed all the colour of the RCCL ships. Throughout the week however I really came to love the more formal ship, with no kids running around, the low-key announcements and all the fantastice staff.

That said I would do RCCL again as I really do love the colour of the ships but for my and OH and being mid 50's we love the Celebrity style and just think it is up a notch on RCCL. For a young family or young couple I would recommend RCCL but for anyone else would say Celebrity. Hope this helps your decision.

When traveling with multi generational family cruises, we choose RCL. More activities for the various age groups.

Since we aren't into the "bells and whistles" of the RCL newer ships, when cruising with DH we choose Celebrity. We enjoy the quieter atmosphere, strict smoking rules, service etc.

The one area X does seem weak , at least for US, is the nightly shows. We like more variety and certainly more "fun" acts. X is more into singers and musicians along with their production shows. It's okay, but we find more variety on RCL. We don't choose to do all the shows on X. Whereas on RCL we rarely miss one. But that of course is based on our tastes and opinion.

We love all the places to relax with a drink on X in the evenings.( especially on the new ships) Nice bands, combos, etc scattered around the ship.

Another thing I forgot about maybe worth mentioning.

Celebrity does not have a community bulletin board which you can post things on like lost and found, card games, rides to the airport, private excursions that have a last minute opening, etc. I found a camera and would have preferred to return it directly to the owner rather than turn it into Guest Relations if possible. It was left on a HOHO bus so the person who lost it might not have even thought to ask at the desk. I was pretty sure they were passengers on our ship because they had one of those el cheapo tote bags that the ship gives to Elite passengers (and no one would save one for another cruise) and there were no other Celebrity ships in port.

However, I lost a very nice bracelet and someone did turn it into the front desk so I felt more comfortable turning my found item in. I sent a thank you note to the finder as the cabin number of the finder was on the envelope they had put it in. I think if I hadn't claimed it within a couple of months, they would have given it to the finder.

The ship itself is more important than the cruise line. We just got off Radiance of the Seas yesterday and it is a gorgeous ship. We tried two of their specialty restaurants and they were as good or better than the specialty restaurants on a Celebrity ship. Our aft corner junior suite was one of the nicest cabins we have ever had on a ship. I got amazing photos of the Hubbard Glacier right from our balcony. The food in the main dining was comparable in quality to Celebrity but their dishes were not as exotic. Buffet was as good or better than Celebrity. However, there were less people wearing tuxes and evening gowns on formal night than on a Celebrity ship, but that is not important to me.
