Caribbean Princess skips Bar Harbor due to weather

That would be disappointing but it happened to us years ago on an NCL cruise coming from Dover to NYC. We couldn't get into Newfoundland and it was the port we all wanted to see the most. Stuff does happen. I hope we don't miss Bar harbor on our Oct cruise.

We loved our stop in Bar Harbor on the Golden Princess several years ago. I checked weather.com and the weather doesn't seem to be that unusual today--temps in the mid 60s with rain and wind up to 15 mph. I wonder if the seas are higher, though, or something is going on with unusual tides.

I guess it doesn't take much for the ship to not stop there...

They don't mention what the seas are like. If people moan and groan about choppy seas on the ship, imagine how they'll crab bouncing up and down in a tender. If a ship cancels a tender port, it's almost always because tendering will be a difficult or uncomfortable experience for the passengers. It's not as if they have to negotiate a "Z" entrance to a harbor; all they have to do is anchor.

According to a buoy near the CB, wind speeds are gusting slightly over 46 miles an hour.

The bridge cam from 11AM this morning shows them in open water with rain and slight wave action.

sailwx dot info shows the ship in an area with 55 MPH winds.

We will be on the ship Saturday

One of my favorite ports - I am sure the cruisers are disappointed.

We missed Newfoundland a few years ago due to weather. On another Canada/NE cruise, only those who got off the ship in the first hour or two in Newport could get off the ship. Due to winds (and tendering), they stopped letting people get off the ship.

From personal experience and this thread, it seems to me that Bar Harbor is always hit-and miss. We stopped there on the Crown last October. We were able to tender ashore and had both a great lobster lunch and tour up into the park. However, our tour guide told us that the morning tours were extremely disappointed since the clouds and rain were so heavy that the upper reaches of Cadillac Mountain were closed. :(

Back in 1996 on the old Royal, we missed Greenland on the way from Dover to NY. Instead, they docked in Newfoundland. This was the first time for a cruise ship to come in there and the whole town came out to greet us. We subsequently missed Greenland again several years later, but in 2008 finally made it in there. And missed Iceland. :D Weather just continues to play tricks on us.

We too missed Bar Harbor on our New England cruise several years back due to fog and choppy seas. They announced that some crew was sent in a tender to scout things out, but they got lost in the fog so another tender was sent to look for the lost tender. They both finally made it back to the ship and docking was cancelled!

I think Bar Harbor is somewhat more difficult to navigate and is missed more frequently than most ports. The conditions have to be just right to dock. One of the crew on our sailing said the ship had also missed Bar Harbor a couple of weeks prior to our cruise. That is life on a cruise ship. You can't count on making all your ports.

It sounds like some of the private islands and Grand cayman. Some places are just not easy because of tendering and rough seas. When we missed Newfoundland we were given open bar for an hour and port charge credit. When we missed the private islnad on RCI we were given bloodly Mary's and run punch for an hour, but only could be ordered via the casino bar. Other times we have missed: we got nothing.

I hope we'll have good weather in early October this year. Really looking forward to this port. Is any particular time of the year that this port is missed more often? I can't imagine it's missed more often than the Falkland Island where the average is 1 out 3 or about 33% (at least that's what I've been told). Luckily we made it both times.

We were on the last fall cruise 10/16) last year on the Caribbean and fortunately were able to visit all the ports of call. Weather was clear, cool and sunny and perfect for Bar Harbor which was our favorite port. Sorry for those who miss this town!

I was on this cruise -- it just ended yesterday.

The day we were to be in Bar Harbor, the weather sure looked nasty to me. I don't blame the captain a bit, though of course I was disappointed.

Ditto - Everyone that we spoke to felt the same way.

Hi All

Only been once and we got in but we missed Newfoundland we sailed in had a look then sailed out again.

I for one would not question a captain, they do know what they are doing.

Only this year while on the Ruby it took four tugs just to get us of the pier, while sailing in was not a problem,

seas, winds and tides change just because something is a dead calm when you arrive what will it be like when you wnt to leave

yours Shogun

We sailed the 9 day Canada/New England CB cruise in mid-June. We were unable to stop at Sydney, NS. Of course we were disappointed but enjoyed our extra sea day. Since we were handed lemons by Mother Nature, we sweetened the lemonade by adding Sydney to our "Ports to Visit" list. Always a reason to return!! If you do everything on your list, there is nothing left. That's our attitude anyway.

My first Canada/New England cruise we missed Bar Harbor due to very thick fog. The fog horn blew for a lot of the cruise.

My second Canada/New England cruise we missed Newport,RI due to gale force winds and very rough seas.

So you just never do know what 'mother nature" will bring.
