The worst ship???

Norwegian Dream.

It was a great cruise but a strange ship.

Heres a pic of her in the Kiel Canal, (the cruise we did on her to the Baltic),

showing the funnel flipped for going under the bridges.

She was the largest ship that could transit the canal.

Why the worst?

Layout.

Someone had the bright idea of cutting her in half and adding a completely new mid section. Unfortunately it did not work out as intended. The new section had Dining Room and you had to walk through it to get anywhere on the ship. Same with the Show lounge. If they were closed you had to go up or down a deck to get through. The Original Dining at the back was also very strange. It was all arranged like a grandstand and was difficult to access and for the staff to serve anyone.

Other than that..... it was a fabulous cruise.

Superstar Leo. :(:(...when it came out here...

beautiful to look at, but ... once you step onboard.( dead from the neck up so to speak.) boring, boring, boring .unless you spent all your time in the Casino.

Cabins were good, food good , but activities were below what we have with P&O and Princess.

Trivia was equal to year 3 for children... bingo...that was another thing...if the jackpot didn't go off on our cruise, they said it would continue next cruise....how were we to know that was true...

even the old Fairstar and Pacific Sky ran rings around it.

(if Pacific Sky were to come back here, I would cruise on her before any other)

kind regards, Lorraine :):)

NCL's FairSky when it was here for a season a number of years ago..minute cabin DH and I were stuck on the sofa bed which followed the contour of the hull....horrible. Bad advice from the agent about the adequate nature of the cabin..

Sofa beds were all the go in those days......

I think Fairsky was Sitmar??

The Fairsky was laid out in 1941 as A cargo ship and was named Steel Artisan. she has a very interesting life from a escort aircraft carrier to a cruise ship to floating hotel, with being may other thing in between.

Fairsky (1958–1977)

Castel Forte (1950–1958)

HMS Attacker (1942–1945)

USS Barnes (1942)

SS Steel Artisan (1941)

We sailed on the "original" Fairsky from Melbourne to Southampton in 1970.

She was pretty old then - we had the second best cabin on the ship - very luxurious - we had a hand basin in the cabin!

Nevertheless we had a great trip - it was our honeymoon!

I think there was a later Fairsky which then became a Princess ship.

As a more recent cruiser, for me it's the Pacific Sun.

Bad design (you can't go end to end on some floors, and have to go up and down to get to the restaurant), lifts/stairs that cover different floors, crowds everywhere, a dark buffet and long lines, plus tight corridors and the huge number of cameras giving a constant feeling of being monitored, and lastly the half hour of loud banging from somewhere in the ship morning and night were the main turnoffs.

Wow, really? We went on the Sun in Feb and thought the buffet was quite open and light. The lines/crowds didn't seem to be any bigger than any other ship we've been on. Did you go on her before they did the renovations (I believe the buffet area was renovated)?

Don't have any "worst" as such to offer but for us bottom of the list would be Pacific Dawn we found her dark and dingy..very dated and certainly not the friendliest ship in the fleet....Pacific Sun beats her hands down on that score.....don't think there is anything on her that would encourage us to cruise back on her...... the dome head makes her one of the most unattractive ships we have cruised on.... my opinion.....cheers Shiona

Hi

Shiona,

Wethought the same about the Jewel....The artrium reminded me of a library.....or funeral parlour....very dsrk and dank...no natural light.maybe good for cold climate cruising

Rebuilt and rebadged as the "Marco Polo" the Alexandr Pushkin is one of our favourite ships have cruised many times on her........my DH worked on the Russian cruise ships as a guest artist whilst they were here in Australia...definately not your typical of the time booze cruise.... cheers Shiona

Have to agree with Badgerbill, we cruised on Marco Polo twice, once for 32 days from Barbados to Antarctica and another 30 day cruise from Dover to Istanbul.

I guess in the end we all have diferent expectations but for us the small friendly ship and attentive staff certainly appealed. Yes we have sailed on the a much bigger ship ,the Diamond Princess, a very nice ship but one doesn't have the personal relationship that one gets on a smaller one. Each to their own!

Hmm - I'm not sure if I can really answer this question.. But out of Pacific Star, Sun, Dawn, Pearl, Oriana ,Arcadia and QM2 -- there was probably more about Arcadia that I didn't like than the others.

I don't really have a bad ship to name unless you count the one I want to be on instead of going to work. :p

At the bottom of my list would be the Pacific Dawn. But then I have only been on 3 ships Pacific Sun, Pacific Dawn and the Norwegian Pearl. I love the Sun and the Pearl for their relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

I am looking forward to sailing on the Radiance, Rhapsody and the Pacific Pearl in the near future. :D

....and don't forget Fairsky was a floating casino in Manilla named 'Philipine Tourist' (1977-1979) until she met her final tragic end. Whilst she was tiny I didn't mind her and her crew were fantastic.

For me the worst by a long way was the old Arcadia who was well and truly past her use by date when we traveled on her

The old Arcadia had been converted from a two class ship without actually altering her in any way except for opening a few doors and proclaiming her one class. Her layout was all over the place sometimes having to go down two floors then up again just to get to the next room. Sadly all her handrails were rusted and chunks came away when you touched them the carpet in many public areas was completely threadbare, and the lifts broke down all the time. I actually got stuck in one of her lifts one day for three hours with the lift attendant and a friend whilst we were in Noumea, finally the lift guy managed to force the doors slightly open and attract someones attention (we could only see people's feet). Nobody was looking for us as my parents thought we had gone back ashore for some shopping in the terminal.

I thought her condition was sad really as she had probably been a grand old girl in her day.

I cruised on the Pac Dawn in October, and I found it to be very ... brown. Thats about the only word I could find to adequately express how I felt about her decor. Lots of faux wood panelling, with beige/orange/brown carpets, paint, furnishings, etc. Even the thermal spa and oasis were brown!

I don't really like brown much ...

I also found it didn't have a lot of sea views from most public areas. I felt that I had to go out of my way to see the sea. I like to know I am at sea when on a cruise :).

My cruise experience was OK, but I doubt I will cruise on her, or the other current other P&O ships, again. There are too many other, interesting, newer, reasonably priced options out there. (I am afraid HAL has spoiled me, too).

Cheers,

Only been on two ships - Rhapsody and Dawn...definitely Dawn by a country mile!! If she wasn't sailing out of Brissy, I wouldn't be hopping on her. ;):)Having said that, any cruise ship is better than NO cruise ship!! ;):D
