Crown princess steaming home!

From what I understand of the PVSA, a round trip "cruise to nowhere" with no port stops is legal. I believe Carnival occasionally does these 2 or 3 day sampler cruises.

Princess has made a post on Facebook about this, and in comments on their post has said that all passengers on this trip are receiving a full refund, a 25% credit toward a future cruise and coverage for all airline change fees.

I'm glad it was not that bad when we were on the ship in December. We had the delayed embarkation from the norovirus being on the cruise before ours. And people on our trip got sick as well. Our head waiter was one of them.

We're currently on the Emerald, and just re-hashed this incident over lunch. I am not at all surprised to learn the number of crew members that have been ill...there was no doubt in my mind that that is where the issue lies. We have been on the Emerald for several cruises. While there have been a few cases of Noro (2 of them near our cabin), the ship has never gone on red alert. *The same kind of passengers board the Crown as board the Emerald...no one can convince me that the passengers are bringing on this illness. We are eating food from the same suppliers and using the same terminal at Port Everglades for embarkation. Why haven't the Emerald passengers been so ill? *Why has this been an issue on the Crown for cruise after cruise? *

It would be interesting to know if Crown crew members with no passenger contact, and who touch nothing the passengers touch, have been infected. I'm sure that they're looking at that. The number of sick are lower this cruise than last. I think it's the source of the illness that has them returning to Florida.*

I feel badly for everyone affected, especially the B2Bers. Keep smiling and sane.

Wow is all I can say......and that I will be on the crown march 17 th......I feel awful for all affected including princess.......I bet they wish they didn't go out this week at all..........I wonder if they let the crew get well totally before they go back to work......or if they give them a hard time when they start to feel sick???

DH and I just discussed this when he called home during his lunch hour. We wondered if crew members are afraid of losing their jobs and being sent home if they take time off for illness. They work long hours with little time off from day-to-day. Many are probably sleep-deprived and don't have the strength to fight illness because they never get caught up on much-needed rest. So many crew members have told DH and me that they use what little time off they have to catch up on sleep and don't allow themselves much in the way of "fun". We all know well that adage about "all work and no play", and that's precisely the reason that we take cruises or other vacations that rejuvenate our bodies, minds, and spirits. jmo

My thoughts and prayers are with the hard-working crew onboard the Crown Princess, many of whom have sailed in the midst of continuous Noro outbreaks since early December.

Chris

Here is the current CDC report for Crown Princess:

Number of passengers reported to medical center approx. 364 out of 3103.

Number of crew who have reported ill approx. 32 out of 1168.

Causative agent: unknown

This was for sail date January 28- Feb. 4th.

I am sure there will be a new report posted soon for Feb. 4th sail date.

I see from other posts that The Crown is heading back to FL, early.

(Princess says Feb. 4th cruise has 55 passengers that have reported to medical center out of 3,078. 56 crew members have reported ill out of 1,178.)

Wow,not a fun cruise for most.

I am updating the numbers: I just clicked on Princess news and the numbers have gone to 114 passengers are ill out of 3,078. 59 crew members are ill ,out of 1,178. This is for the current sailing that left on Feb. 4th.

You changed my mind, if it was the taxis, hotel etc other ships should be having problems. The Ruby had some but that still leaves a bunch of other ships departing Port Everglades.

The crew could very likely be the problem.

 I am so sorry to hear about this. DH and I disembarked the Crown on Saturday and feel strongly that there were many more sick passengers than were reported. It's possible that many crew members hadn't manifested symptoms yet but were already infected by the virus.

Thoughts and prayers for everyone onboard. Be well.

Chris

I'm with you on the under reporting. I was with 12 women, five got sick on the ship and four on Saturday after returning home. The last four thought we were home free.

So one question is' date=' will they disembark the crew during the sanitization process?[/quote']

THis is exactly what I want to know. and if any are still sick, will they be kept off the ship during the Feb. 11th sailing? We sail on the 18th and are hoping for a healthy ship!!!!

I did not read everything, but did they stop at any ports? I am wondering if this is being picked up at stop and then brought on by passengers, or maybe a crew member. It seems strange they keep getting reinfected. I hope it is not a piece of machinery on board that is not getting cleaned.

I hope everyone feels better soon. I am sorry it stoped in the middle of your vacation. I would just hang around florida and enjoy the time until the next cruise.

Correction: this sailing skipped Princess Cays and they told passengers they would dock in Curacao as early as 9am (rather than 1pm as normal) instead. However, it sounds like they never even made it to Curacao and are turning around right away, so it's a cruise to nowhere!

Very upsetting for those onboard, hope you are all staying as safe and healthy as possible!

That's correct. They didn't make it to Curacao today, but since they won't be back until Thursday indicates that they must have darn close to Curacao before they decided to turn around!

Well, PescadoAmarillo made an interesting case for it being caused by crew. Anyone staying on board could also be suspect. Some posters on other threads postulate that it's kids or the elderly. That being said, it will be exceedingly hard to find the cause. Noro spreads like wildfire through assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals, any place there's a closed environment. What compounds this is the very small amount of viral material it takes to infect new hosts and the fact that very many people don't take responsibility for their hygiene.

It's a shame that the cruise is being cut short. Kudos to Princess for providing the compensation package they did to the Crown passengers.

While I really like getting out of the snow and cold in January and February, I think I'll stick to cruising when it's warmer.

I was on the sailing last week and got noro. My fiancé didn't get it, thank goodness. I got sick on the Friday morning and was quarantined. we are both clean freaks, constantly washing our hands and not touching anything except what's necessary. I've heard it already many times and I feel that it did start in the kitchen with a crew member being sick. There was a wide outbreak onboard where everyone got it all at the same time....it makes most sense that it started with the food service that hit a large group at once and spread from there.

I don't have noro symptoms anymore but I still feel very weak, stomach hasnt settled out, no appetite at all....I just want to go back to feeling normal :(

We are still waiting for a letter from LA to provide us with more details. We have been told by the Captain that a FULL refund will be made to each passenger and hotels will be reimbursed if required. Passengers who require flight changes will also be made. As more information becomes available I’ll post. As we’re on a BTB, we’re most interested to know if ill crew will be removed for the next cruise. If that doesn’t happen I’m extremely concerned for our health. I’ll continue to remain optimistic.

Wonder if the government/health department of Curacao had anything to do with the decision to turn around? Wouldn't think they would want a ship of sick people stopping and possibly spreading it to their island when they are so dependent on the tourist visits.

I was on the Celebrity Solstice on week 5 of continued Noro outbreaks. We had delayed boarding and our sailing had only a few cases. We waited in the loading area (not the check in are) for hours while the hazmat teams w/ their tanks of disinfection and white hazmat coveralls disinfected the ship.

As I said, there were still a few outbreaks on my sailing, fewer the next sailing and none reported after that.

One thing I noticed was that they were always cleaning around the ship... more often than usual. (poor crew had to be exhausted). They even took all the books out of the lending library. HOWEVER, the casino continued in full operation. Chips changed hands constantly and in none of my MANY MANY hours in the casino did I see the chips changed out or cleaned. Cards were not changed out any more often than usual. Since surface contact can spread the norovirus, I thought it rather "interesting" that the casino... a big money maker for cruise lines... was business as usual.

First thing when I get on a ship or in a hotel room, I take my clorox wipes and wipe down all the surfaced that I think I might be in contact with. Phones, remotes, door knobs etc etc. I like the idea also of spraying the surface of the bedspread thingy and the pillows. My travel companion thinks I'm a bit loony as I'm not scrupulously cleaning in my own home. I should have her read this thread.

First of all, I feel terrible for those who just returned on the Crown and those currently aboard. No one wants to have a vacation ruined by being sick or having the very real threat of becoming sick.

I think Princess has three options when it comes to the 2/11 sailing:

1 - Replace all 1,000+ crew members (not realistic)

2 - Cancel it all together (bad PR, another 3,000 unhappy pax and more lost revenue)

3 - Roll the dice and hope the few days in port will give the virus time to run its course with the crew and B2B pax. (another game of PR Russian roulette)

I think Princess has done a commendable job with the 2/4 passengers and their compensation considering the situation they are in. I don't claim to have all the answers but I, like other cruisers on the Crown in the coming weeks, will be watching the situation very closely.

Dave, Thanks for the updates!

It is quite upsetting to have the continued Noro outbreaks on the ship. I think I agree with some of the other posters about the crew possibly being the cause for the continued illness. I do hope the ship’s captain address this possibility.

We are looking forward to meeting you as we are going on the Cozumel tour with you next week. I hope to meet you at one or both of the Meet & Greets.

My wife and I are onboard with you next week. I also would be interested in knowing how the crew will be handled for the cruise leaving this Saturday. Appreciate your updates. See you, hopefully, on Satuday

Boy, I agree. From now on it will be the warmer months cruising for us.

The pools on the Crown were not all that warm nor was the pool at Notchi Cocom in Cozumel.

We disembarked on Feb 28th. Didn't see anything like what's happening now. Guess we just lucked out. Sorry for all those affected.

Let me get this straight.

Today the Crown is supposed to be docked at 1pm in Curacao, tomorrow (Wed) Aruba and then two sea days back for Sat Ft Lauderdale.

Did the Crown NOT stop at Curacao? Is she steaming straight back to get into Lauderdale a day or two early?

Never mind... finally saw a earlier post that they are skipping Curacao and will be back Thurs... WOW that sucks!!!
