ging466 Posted June 7, 2012 Author #7 Share Posted June 7, 2012 Hi Everyone I've just noticed on the SS website that there is a new voyage listed which is part of my voyage on the Shadow in September. The new listing is 3227B and it's Vancouver to Kodiak for 6 days. Does anyone know why SS would split the 16 days into 2 voyages? Thankx. Cheers Jennifer
Stumblefoot Posted June 7, 2012 #8 Share Posted June 7, 2012 Does anyone know why SS would split the 16 days into 2 voyages?Lots of available space on the crossing, so it's a way to generate some income from travelers who have no interest in the itinerary otherwise. Suites are a perishable product. Better to have them sail full, if even for 6 days of a repositioning cruise.
Rare Keith1010 Posted June 7, 2012 #9 Share Posted June 7, 2012 Jennifer, I am glad that your stop includes Kodiak, Alaska. We were there on the Crystal Serenity this past April and this was our sixth Alaska cruise (one was on the Silver Shadow) but first time in Kodiak. They get very few ships and I understand even less this year. For me it was more of the Alaska of old as the nearby town didn't have all of the shops that the larger towns tend to have that are more of what you see in the Caribbean. The town is about a 30 minute walk from the cruise ship terminal and there is a lot to see in the town. There will be shuttles too. So, whatever tour you do I am sure you'll also have time to visit the town. People were just wonderful. I am sure you have learned that the key to Alaska dress is to layer your clothing. Vancouver is also a beautiful city. Looks like a great cruise and going East to West will be easier as you will get to set the clocks back one hour on several nights. Rare Keith1010 Posted June 8, 2012 #12 Share Posted June 8, 2012 Jennifer, these are some photos from Kodiak that we took in April of this year. In the Fall you won't see the snow but you will see a very nice town and area. I looked it up and only 15 ships will dock in Kodiak this year. Contrast this with the height of the summer season when you may see four or more ships docked in Juneau and even more in Ketchikan between those docked and others offering tender service. These are some photos from our visit to Kodiak, Alaska in April of this year. We were the first ship of the season to visit Kodiak. They do not get too many cruise ships visiting them. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7ZzE8B68DFM/T80FzNE5i-I/AAAAAAAARYs/0EAjo-qhC2U/s1600/DSC_4028.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eWIaWU5gEyk/T80F1_gm-II/AAAAAAAARY0/XKvPvbpw0js/s1600/DSC_4032.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w1quhkZn-LA/T80F5xXHTII/AAAAAAAARZE/21exitwH42U/s1600/DSC_4039.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-psLqFJlNHPA/T80F3aKNQoI/AAAAAAAARY8/hfih8gxVjFc/s1600/DSC_4036.jpg http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Kj2KeHgCz7I/T80F8P2wt4I/AAAAAAAARZM/hSwfHCKB_EI/s1600/DSC_4053.jpg http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o8JjtgR0jT8/T80F-lmFwlI/AAAAAAAARZU/YoOrp5FbVWo/s1600/DSC_4054.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xHmGRwzbCOA/T80GA982t-I/AAAAAAAARZc/iRysJ05hdwA/s1600/DSC_4056.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X39hyvMSjVU/T80GD1z8MSI/AAAAAAAARZk/uOurXcm9DaA/s1600/DSC_4063.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iAc6OIg1wbQ/T80GHLOlCNI/AAAAAAAARZs/jPs8bGpgEKI/s1600/DSC_4065.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hW5qKpbMbKM/T80GIwrKq3I/AAAAAAAARZ0/y0vDMrvVnfA/s1600/DSC_4066.jpg http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K3Lf7e3E4YU/T80GLyjv7ZI/AAAAAAAARZ8/DNA-c_5DtsY/s1600/DSC_4068.jpg Keith

Travelcat2 Posted June 8, 2012 #15 Share Posted June 8, 2012 Enjoyed the photos. Keith, any recommendations for excursions in Kodiak? ging466 -- wish we were going on the cruise with you but we're doing the same one next September.
Rare Keith1010 Posted June 8, 2012 #16 Share Posted June 8, 2012 Thank you Travelcat2. We didn't take an excursion but if we did I would recommend one of the wildlife ones. I wouldn't do things like the highlights because you could easily do them on your own. Keith

Herman The Cat Posted June 8, 2012 #18 Share Posted June 8, 2012 There is a really interesting show in the US on The Weather Channel called something like "Coast Guard Kodiak Alaska" that would probably be fun to watch prior to your journey. It focuses on their rescues, but also has a fair amount of coverage on the town, the people, environment, etc. These are amazing people!

ging466 Posted June 10, 2012 Author #20 Share Posted June 10, 2012 Hi Jennifer, The 'kittens' are coming with you. This is indeed good news Silver Spectre :) Are u doing the whole 16 days or just the 6 days to Kodiak? SS has been promoting this cruise and the following which ends in Shanghai (I think) - 27 days starting at around $12500 in Australia recently. I received a brochure in the mail and also an email...pity I can't take the extra time off work and go right through to Shanghai. badgerdee Posted June 10, 2012 #21 Share Posted June 10, 2012 Hi ging466 Out of interest, have you worked out how to organise your flights yet? We're doing this same cruise next year and will probably buy a Tokyo return, then a Vancouver return from Tokyo (ditching the return portion). But if you've worked out an alternative, would love to hear it!

But if you've worked out an alternative, would love to hear it! Hi badgerdee I have done exactly what u describe. I got a good special on Qantas for return Tokyo flights and then got a Tokyo-Vancouver return on JAL and will ditch the return. This was by far the cheapest routing. ging466 Posted August 7, 2012 Author #25 Share Posted August 7, 2012 I got my lovely silver box today. I'm getting excited now that I have my docs. I booked this cruise in December 2010 - I didn't think it would ever come around. Now I've got less than 30 days before I leave Sydney. Yahoo:D Cheers Jennifer P.S. Has anyone decided at the last minute to join? :)
