Riviera's godmother

I am on my way to New York to formally welcome Riviera's Godmother into the Oceania Cruises family. As you might expect, this is a very special woman who will make us all proud representing the brand. After all, she has distinguished herself by achieving some of the most coveted culinary accolades. Furthermore, she shares our passion for people evidenced by the way she has leveraged her talents to give back to the world community. Be on the look out for an announcement....Friday morning!!!

No, I’m pretty confident it’s going to be Paula Deen

That was my first thought, so I checked her calendar and Paula has a book signing in Savannah on 5/6, so unless she is skipping the Introductory Cruise and is flying direct to Barcelona for the Christening only....

Oh Boo Hoo, I was counting on Betty White.

Humbug.

Now I'm GLAD we aren't on the maiden ... we were booked on the maiden the first time. Cancelled before the first cancellation, and never considered signing on after the second cancellation! (Strictly for itinerary reasons. Not to mention other conflicts once the dates changed.)

Obviously all are welcome to their opinions in a forum such as this. Personally I can't help but feel only excitement for Oceania in it's announcement of Riviera's godmother. And I have no involvement other than the privilege and pending excitement to be on the MV.

To each their own.

Some people were vocal in their disappointment of Mary Hart for Marina, and yet it's obvious what a successful marketing strategy it was. As long as it's good for Oceania, I'm all in favor of whoever they choose. Considering O's reputation of having the best food at sea, the choice of a top culinary expert is a natural.

As to previous comments, I agree that choosing Paula Deen might be controversial, but us rural hicks LIKE Rachel Ray!

I'm fascinated by your remark, not because I'm challenging it in any way, but because I really don't understand how the naming of the godmother impacts marketing.

Over the holidays, we sailed Marina totally unaware of Mary Hart's role as godmother. I'll admit that when I saw her picture in the foyer, I thought "What an odd choice." But I'm an Oceania cruiser who tunes out the godmother decision entirely. I wanted a convenient holiday cruise. Marina offered precisely what I wanted. My husband and I probably devoted three seconds to making our decision.

Next week, my husband and I will likely be booking a cruise on Riviera summer 2014. With the possible exception of Paula Deen or Rachel Ray, there's not a single female chef that might have an impact on my decision. Frankly, even one of those two chefs alone wouldn't matter to me. However, Deen or Ray coupled with the lack of problem solving on the holiday cruise would suggest that Oceania is re-branding itself in a way that doesn't sit well with me.

I'd love for you -- or anyone who cares to chime in -- to explain the role of the godmother in marketing.

Stan insists that it will be Martha Stewart, and I promised to post this so that he can reap the glory if he is correct.

Don't get me wrong -- I admire Martha Stewart -- she built a billion dollar empire around how to set a table. But do you really think O is going to choose a convicted felon (convicted albeit without any merit IMO).

I agree with ksps -- who is going to book a cruise based on the ship's godmother???

Marketing strategy? I don't think so. Has anyone noticed in any of the brochures a mention that Mary Hart is Marina's godmother -- "so book with us so you can see her photo near the grand staircase?" LOLOL Come on guys -- this godmother stuff is only for us fools on CC to bandy about when it's a slow news day.

Having a GODMOTHER for a ship is tradition...that is all

It is like wasting a bottle of champs by smashing it against the hull

I do not base my cruise choices on who the Godmother is

Just enjoy the banter :)

A little research (very little) indicates that Cat Cora had a relationship with Disney. That may be problematic.

As someone who has established roots in N. Cal she is on our good list.

But as several have said, what does it really matter. The picture of Mary Hart on the Marina is sort of glaring and in your face in an "I am your leader" sort of way but I don't believe anyone was influenced by her selection to book or not to book a cruise.

Cat's lifestyle may be a problem for a few but certainly not for the usual Oceania cruiser.

Well said, Lyn, and let's also remember that for many Oceania employees, this new ship is the culmination of many months of hard work and planning.

The staff are understandably excited, and Oceania wants to make her naming ceremony an event, partly to honor that.

When the Marina sailed into Miami for the first time last year, Oceania threw a harbor-side Welcome Party and many who attended were crying with pride when she appeared out of the Atlantic mist.

Actually the tease implies that the godmother is a chef, neither Rachel Ray or Paula Dean actually have this title, they are self taught "cooks" and would both be the first to point that out. Martha Stewart is also not a "chef" and if memory serves she is already a godmother of a HAL ship or something, I remember there was a little controversy over her pick at the time because of the felony thing.

Cat Cora fits the bill, but is perhaps not as high profile as one would assume the godmother to be....I think alot of people would look at her picture and say "Who is that?"

I really wonder how many people who sail Oceania care one way or another!

Isn't everyone just like me:

I first check who the godmother is and, assuming she passes muster both politically and professionally, then and only then do I even begin to consider such minor elements like the ports, the cost, the food, the service, and the length of the cruise.
