Rare ladylemondrop Posted May 8, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 8, 2012 Ok, it's a boring question, but I like to make my own hot porridge oat breakfast and was wondering if they have a microwave in the ocean view cafe (buffet self serve restaurant) on solstice class ships? I just love my ready brek!!:D
sddsddean Posted May 8, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 8, 2012 Never seen a 'passenger' microwave on any ship, but the oatmeal they do is almost like porridge...perhaps just a bit more watery. Does for me with a load of brown sugar!! (and I know thats bad for me and if I was a Scot I'd have salt, but hey...I'm on holiday!!). Rare uktog Posted May 8, 2012 #4 Share Posted May 8, 2012 Doubt there would be - too much of a Health and Safety risk - cross contamination etc
Rare ladylemondrop Posted May 8, 2012 Author #5 Share Posted May 8, 2012 Oh dear. two weeks with no ready brek is a scary thought!! well, I guess I could eat french toast....and strawberries with chcolate sauce...:D
kyriecat Posted May 8, 2012 #6 Share Posted May 8, 2012 I'm not that familiar with the making of hot porridge so forgive me if I'm making an ignorant suggestion. They usually have dispensers for hot water (for making tea or instant cocoa) available. Is porridge something that you soak in hot water like oats for oatmeal before eating? If so, would using the hot water (it's generally quite scalding) instead of a microwave work?
ssptcruise Posted May 8, 2012 #7 Share Posted May 8, 2012 (edited) I would bet one of the cooks/servers at the buffet stations would gladly heat up your container in their microwave for you if you ask. Edited May 8, 2012 by ssptcruise
Denny01 Posted May 8, 2012 #8 Share Posted May 8, 2012 Oh dear. two weeks with no ready brek is a scary thought!! well, I guess I could eat french toast....and strawberries with chcolate sauce...:D Yes, expand your horizons and go for it! I try all kinds of different foods on cruise...that's what so nice. If you don't like it, you put it aside and try something else, or take just a bit to taste - I added that last part for all those that go bonkers over not cleaning your plate no matter how much you don't like it or how full you already are. Tried pickled herring on a cruise and loved it for breakfast. Went home and got a jar of it....didn't taste nearly as good as on the ship with all of that fresh sea air and no work awaiting me. Enjoy - by the way, I hope when I said 'expand your horizons', about trying new foods, it doesn't lead to 'expanding' your waistline! Den

TeaBag Posted May 8, 2012 #10 Share Posted May 8, 2012 Oh dear. two weeks with no ready brek is a scary thought!! well, I guess I could eat french toast....and strawberries with chcolate sauce...:D I, too, eat oat bran porridge which I make in the microwave, every morning, and I was wishing I could make it on the ship too because I think it is the breakfasts on the ship that cause my weight gain! Love, love, love the waffles or the English breakfast! You're from England and you don't have sausages, bacon and fried tomatoes for breakfast?:p
Lsimon Posted May 8, 2012 #11 Share Posted May 8, 2012 (edited) ... I think it is the breakfasts on the ship that cause my weight gain!... I know where you are coming from but there are many healthy choices available on the ship. I usually try to keep to whole grain cereal and a bit of yogurt for breakfast but succumb to the allure of omelettes, bacon, potatoes and a bagel and cream cheese now and then as well. I think it has to do a lot more with self control than a lack of healthy options. Edited May 8, 2012 by Lsimon
tucker1865 Posted May 8, 2012 #12 Share Posted May 8, 2012 There should be a few microwaves aboard , with a person to monitor useage. It is needed since a lot of the buffet food has gone cold, especially on the last Eclipse transatlantic.......cold cold. Don't get me wrong, the food is great but not cold. Rare ladylemondrop Posted May 8, 2012 Author #13 Share Posted May 8, 2012 Ready brek is really smooth oats, that you mix with milk then heat to thicken. It's yummy, and very healthy. I cannot indulge in two whole weeks of fried food at breakfast I have just managed to lose 14lbs!! I might take a microwaveable container as suggested and see if they will oblige....and of course I will have the odd treat day or two or three....! ;)

Fried food is there, but not that much. Much more selection well beyond that. Personally, I'd not worry too much - I bet you'll find quite heathly and fun breakfast dining beyond what you normally have. But that's up to you...I've seen a number of posts bemoaning the poster's favorite topping or sauce, or whatever is not avail and they are bringing it. Go for it, but it does limit you by not challenging you to step out of your comfort zone a bit. As someone, I think BridgeMaven, posted recently you either cruise to experience new things and expand your horizons (did it again with that 'exand' word!), or you try to bring home along with you for comfort. enjoy your home-comfort cruise or your new experience cruise, or something inbetween. astrocat Posted May 9, 2012 #19 Share Posted May 9, 2012 The oatmeal in the Aqua Spa cafe is yummy and the food there is 'lighter' than the main buffet bfast. ali-ali-oh Posted May 9, 2012 #23 Share Posted May 9, 2012 This is my solution, thank you! :) Hi Louise They did have hot milk at breakfast on the last X cruise I did - in a pump type dispenser near the hot water/coffee station. They didn't have it the rest of the day. Also, as a child when we did not have microwaves, my mum used to make ReadyBrek just by pouring hot milk over it in the bowl - it never went anywhere near the pan and I believe that's why the "bits" are so small so they don't need to be heated and soaked like traditional porridge/oatmeal. If you like it slightly thicker you could use a bit less milk. I have also been able to ask for hot milk in the MDR before - so this could well be an option for you. Why not try this method before you leave? As an alternative, I have had the equivalent porridge/oatmeal in the MDR and although it's a thicker consistency to ReadyBrek with a liberal sprinkling of sugar, it's not that bad. Personally, I really don't like oatmeal made with water - I remember my grandmother making it for me once because I insisted I wanted porridge (meaning ReadyBrek) when I stayed at her house - real porridge (despite her best efforts) was not a suitable substitute - yuk! Thank you, that is great to know. Its such a silly thing, but sometimes its nice to have a bit of "normal" home with you on a holiday! I am bringing my husbands favourite PG tea bags and digestive biscuits too, last time we were on board we requested tea with biscuits, we got Lipton tea and a small box of "Fruit Loops"!! This still makes me laugh even now, when I imagine my dear husband trying to "dunk" them!!! :D

This still makes me laugh even now, when I imagine my dear husband trying to "dunk" them!!! :D My DH is the same - we never travel anywhere without the PG Tips! The waiters soon get used to us in the MDR and no longer bring out the wooden box of tea bags for us to choose from. The most difficult thing (regardless of which tea bags you use) is to get them to bring "HOT" water rather than lukewarm. I know I can't expect boiling water these days, but sometimes it can only be described as tepid - yuk! You can get biscuits on the X ships - but you need to ask for "cookies" and I know they have digestives because DH always gets them with his after dinner cheese plate. Guess it's an eccentric English thing!
