10th and probably last Royal Caribbean Cruise.

Recommended Posts

(BTW, I don't believe I stated that "back in 2008 that they didn't allow it".....I was surprise because we DID bring it on then.

Umm, your post from Aug 2, 2008 says otherwise.

"Well I guess I am in the minority too..because if they were denying boarding, I would go elsewhere too. RCI is the only line that forbids bringing wine/champagne onboard...so there are plenty of other choices."

Just reposting the facts from the archives. The internet remember everything...

Royal Caribbean's alcohol policy is so out of line with the rest of the cruise industry, that I doubt I will sail again with them.

Most lines (Princess, Norwegian, Cunard, Disney, and even Carnival) allow you to bring on at least 1 bottle of wine/champagne! Are they that desperate for revenue that they forbid even a bottle of champagne for a celebration???

If not for the revenue, then just how many 59 year old women do they have onboard, who go hog wild on a glass or two of champagne? Do they not even have respect for their passengers, that they will behave in a responsible manner?

Unbelievable!!

Lots of people wont cruise Disney because their ships don't have a casino. I don't gamble so it doesn't matter to me but everyone looks for different things in a vacation.

I do find it a little funny that some are saying how ridiculous the op is for not wanting to sail since they can't bring their own booze yet there are countless threads about smuggling. Apparently those people can't live without their booze either. This situation is no different.

People use this analogy all the time but it is flawed - RCCL prohibits me from bringing my own favorite libation on board; however, once on board I can purchase most any libation I care to indulge in. It might not be exactly my preference, but pretty darned close.

I board a Disney Ship I know that I will not be able to indulge in my pasttime of feeding quarters in slot machines. I am sure there are a few on here who will give the ridiculous over the top answer that I can bring my own slot machine on board  but the reality is if you enjoy gambling, limited or extreme, you will not indulge on Disney.

IMMHO I just can't see myself stop cruising on one of my favorite cruiselines just because I can't bring onboard "ONE BOTTLE OF WINE".

I just don't understand why people get so upset about it. And lets be honest, if you are ready to stop cruising on a certain cruiseline because of this, you are upset

For one thing, I don't think you can get a $30 bottle of wine on Royal Caribbean anymore. Probably $34-$38 for the real cheap stuff. Above $40 for decent and above $60 for anything good. That said, that is no different from a land based good Steak/Chop House Restaurant.

My DH and I used to always order a bottle of wine @ $60-75 bucks or so when we would frequent a fine Steak House. Finally we realized it was a pretty stupid way to spend our money. Now we each get a Martini (with a good

vodka) and then he orders a beer and I a glass of wine. Much cheaper than a bottle of wine and just as enjoyable.

If we want to drink really good wines we buy them at home. There are many really great places to go to get good wines at good prices. Much better than paying an up charge of more than 100% at a restaurant or on the Ship.

So trying drinking mixed drinks or better yet good martinis, the up charge on the Ship is much more in line with a regular bar charge on land. And a good Martini for $11-15 bucks carries a lot more bang for your buck than any glass of wine. JMO.

Oh and did you mean to spell "sales tax" as "sails tax", actually pretty funny if you did.

This is what we have found as well, we drink nice wines at home, and even once ordered a "gift delivery" when you could do that to have a bottle we liked. We ended up forgetting about it until the last night and just so we didn't have to bring it home drank it. Decided after that it wasn't worth it.

I may order a glass of wine with my dinner on ocassion, but usually order mixed drinks, martinis, etc as we find they are a better "bang for our buck" on cruises. Especially when the wines are not what we normally enjoy at home!

Your decision, so bye bye enjoy your future cruises, more room onboard for others. RCI will have to cry themselves to sleep over the loss:rolleyes:

Sarcasm begats karma.......watch out!:(

Your life doesn't have to revolve around alcohol to have a special bottle of wine or bubbly that you wish to bring aboard, but that's a nifty wide brush you're using there, may wish to knock it down a size or ten.

Say you have a bottle of wine you put down 21 years ago when your child was born. For their 21st birthday they want to go on a cruise and you're looking forward to consuming that bottle with them on their 21st birthday. It would seem you can do this on every line. As long as it is not RCCL (as an aside it seems rather strange that RCCL would let you bring alcohol on board their other lines - that possible reasoning of that rule is fascinating er flame war worthy).

Good points, you presented them better than I apparently did. ;)

I don't make my cruise decision based on the cruiseline's alcohol policy! I'm just saying..:)

I don't either...at least not JUST on that. There are many great lines out there and we make our decisions based on itinerary, convenient time of year, price, policies, etc.

I think the big problem with RCL's policy is that they don't appear to have anything really special to drink as an alternative for people wanting to bring a favourite wine on board. I have no problem with them wanting to make money but the wine packages look woeful.

We are having a celebration for grandmas 70th and wanted something super ( I mean a Penfold's Hill of Grace sort of super or something of a similar caliber) but it appears we cannot have it at any price because of the sad selection. Correct me if I am wrong and there is some secret selection hidden away somewhere when we get on board.

That was exactly my point. We wanted to mark a special occasion with a special bottle of champagne/wine. :)

This analogy is flawed. If you bring your own slot machine you are playing with your own money. That is not gambling. That is moving your money from one of your pockets to another.

If people who agree with policies, procedures, etc of a cruise line and disagree with a poster who does not is called a "Cheerleader," what do you call a poster who creates a thread in a crazy font to intentionally incite other posters with negativity of a specific cruise line on a board dedicated to that line? Particularly when they go on to latter play the sympathy card (I feel battered) after receiving just the response they expected.

And then goes and bumps a year old thread about another highly controversial subject on this board of leaving your balcony cabin door open while you sleep at night lol.

What next? Is she gonna bump all the old dress code threads too? :D

6andy6, You would not believe(or maybe you would), the abuse I have been taking over starting this thread and another discussion about the same topic. Actually the comment you were referring to, is one of the milder ones.

The only thing I can think of, is that on a computer folks feel very comfortable "typing" things that they wouldn't normally "say" face to face with someone.

Folks have actually looked at my number of posts and then read back to posts I made back in 2008, so they could say, "I told you so"....

The name of this board is Cruise Critic, good and bad, nice and nasty. We should all realize before posting that we will be getting slings and arrows and be prepared for it. You know the old saying (if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen) ;)

I just don't understand trying to create negativity on a board about cruising. If it were something ridiculous like RCI started a policy of trying to run over dolphins while cruising I could understand not patronizing them. But to create a thread about a topic that has been discussed ad nauseum since Moses wore short pants seems intentional. Never mind that the OP has been aware of it for at least four years and continued to cruise with them.

Also, I was going for your run-on sentence title with my previous post. :p

Oh Rats!!! You caught the flaw in my analogy, when I was trying to debunk another analogy. I guess I should amend that I have an open cabin policy and invite fellow cruisers to try out my slot machine? :D

Its not flawed. My point was we all want different things in a vacation. What is important to you might seem stupid to me and vice versa. Everyone feels the need to attack because bringing alcohol onboard is now a big deal to her. Just because it isn't a big deal to you is irrelevant.

Maybe you wont sail a certain line because the rooms are a few square feet smaller than another. I may think that is ridiculous but you may think this is a deal breaker.

I would challenge you to find five posts here that haven't already been posted over and over and over again.

Every post here is a duplicate of one that has been posted ten other times. If you don't like it just don't click on it.

I didn't say I didn't like it...just a little perplexed by the reasoning. And the post you quoted of mine was a carry-on from a response to another I posted so it was taken out of context. This thread was obviously started to generate a negative response and I was simply pointing that out.

It also hard to know if I'll like something if I don't click on it. :)

To Suzyed: Watch out! The RCI Cheerleaders are out in force! Beating up on you apparently makes them feel better. I totally agree with you that RCI charges too much for drinks and their selection sucks. If you are dissatisfied with their policy then you can speak with your MONEY. Choose another line that accommodates you regarding alcohol.

Funny because that wasn't the point of the OP. But you keep on getting on with that negativity! :)

then why do so many folks worry about how I spend mine? If they leave RCi because of the liquor policy, how does that impact the rest of us?

Speaking of wine...is it purely sour grapes on their part?

Heck, I would not cruise on NCL, but I do not waste my time posting on the NCL boards about why I would not. So why waste your own time

whining (pun intended) about RCI, go elsewhere.

Is it really "cheerleading" to point out that the OP was complaining about a policy that has been in effect for far longer than she has been sailing on the line, or noting the incongruity of her suddenly deciding that after 10 cruises on this line, the policy is suddenly so burdensome that she is considering leaving for another line? If someone is going to take a particular position, they should expect others to point out the flaws and inconsistencies of that position. To disagree with someone's opinion and indicating the reasons for that disagreement, is not the same as flaming them.

As to the reason the OP would post her position, perhaps she thinks of herself as an opinion leader and believes that by posting she will spur a mass exodus of cruisers from RCI. ;)

To the some of you other posters:

My mistake for even saying anything...I never would have imagined that people would come to the defense of a cruise line at the expense of the feelings of another human being. I didn't attack anyone, yet most of the posts here have done just that.

So all of you who have felt a need to attack me, I hope you are satisfied that you got to set me straight and made me feel like crap....I guess that was your intention....well done.

Sounds like someone didn´t get the response they wanted.

I'm with you, it should lighten, but I don't want to see ppl rocked drunk on my sailings... so I'll take the tighter restrictions to avoid the party boats.

Will RCI serve you less at the bar? "I'm sorry, sir/ma'am, I see that you have already consumed three alcoholic beverages in the past 24 hours, I can't serve you any more"? I doubt it. So, how, exactly, is preventing someone from bringing on one bottle of wine or champagne preventing a "party boat"?
