Postman806 Posted June 23, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 23, 2012 Karaoke singers-what are some of your favorite songs to sing? Any favorite karaoke stories? And is cruise ship karaoke different from your favorite karaoke bars at home? And how?
t_car Posted June 23, 2012 #2 Share Posted June 23, 2012 cruise ship karaoke is pretty hit and miss. It all depends on the crowd on that particular sailing. You may have a lot of kids, or drunk young people just goofing around. Or a much older crowd for oldies all night long. Sometimes you come across really good singers that think they may get discovered and sing all night long. A couple of times, I have seen some pros up there. Only thing I know is that I will never see these folks again, so I might as well enjoy it. I like to sing elvis, sinatra stuff, sometimes queen or rolling stones, depending on the mood. Biggest difference with karaoke bars at home is that folks are more uninhibited and can get wild, and there are kids around, which you normally don't see at home. Looking forward to the next time. spunkyhungry Posted June 23, 2012 #3 Share Posted June 23, 2012 In my experience on cruise ships, there are fewer people wanting to sing, so I get more frequent turns to perform, which I like. Also, often the same crowd will come to karaoke on multiple nights, so you can get to know the other singers a bit more. If you enter a karaoke competition, the winner is determined by how loudly the audience is screaming for each contestant, which means whoever has the most/loudest friends will win, not necessarily the person who is the best singer. Geldhart Posted June 24, 2012 #5 Share Posted June 24, 2012 Is there anywhere one can look to see the available songs? (specifically Freedom of the Seas) I'm thinking about giving it a try, but the songs I know well enough to sing may not be available.
Erik101 Posted June 24, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 24, 2012 Unfortunately, I don't have a favorite karaoke song at this time but I will tell you which one I can't stand and that's Sweet Caroline. I swear this song gets picked out every time I go to karaoke night and Margaritaville comes in at 2nd. No offense to Neil Diamond and Jimmy Buffett fans, but when these songs are being played, it just drives me to buy another drink! :p

zacc Posted June 24, 2012 #8 Share Posted June 24, 2012 Far, Far Away.................since in reality 95% of all karaoke "voices" should never leave the confines of their own shower curtains. If their friends were really friends they would tell them the truth.......you simply can't sing! But for the few with nice voices sing on America!!! I do enjoy a really good singer. But just as much I enjoy a mediocre singer who really performs well and entertains the crowd. And then there's the horrible singers who only half-know their song. I've seen some who make me laugh do hard I cry
triplett Posted June 30, 2012 #10 Share Posted June 30, 2012 I always love it when someone does "Sweet Home Alabama"
juliawinston Posted July 1, 2012 #11 Share Posted July 1, 2012 I think generally fast songs are better received than slow songs. It's also good to know your crowd and pick songs that they are likely to recognize.
Fake Steve Carrel Posted December 24, 2013 #12 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Cruise ship karaoke is a great way to meet a ton of people and become a ship personality. Piano man- Billy Joel. Broken Wings- mr. mister. Sweet Caroline. Fly me to the Moon.
Laurie S. Posted December 24, 2013 #13 Share Posted December 24, 2013 I do Carole King, Pat Benatar, and Peter, Paul, and Mary typically, plus a wide variety of whatever interests me. My fiancé is a former professional musician and choir director and we're working on some duets for our upcoming cruises.

KirkNC Posted December 25, 2013 #15 Share Posted December 25, 2013 The best we saw was a 92 year old man singing "I did it my way" by Frank Sinatra.

My 17 year DD won a kareoke contest on the NCL Sun earlier this year. We sailed with only her DDad and one sister.

nlsoftly Posted December 26, 2013 #18 Share Posted December 26, 2013 One of my stranger hobbies is writing new words to old songs. I wonder if I would be allowed to sing my alternate versions? I wonder if anyone would notice :D
cb at sea Posted December 27, 2013 #19 Share Posted December 27, 2013 Faster songs sound better if the singer isn't that great. I don't know why most folks choose slow songs....if they can't stay on key, it's much more noticable if you're singing slowly...... Faster songs are much more fun for the crowd to listen to. Yes...Sweet Caroline should NEVER, EVER be played again! Ditto, Margaritaville!
