Bad Behavior on Shorter Cruises?

It's the price of the cruise. How did the old country club motto go? "Our prices descriminate, so you don't have to!"

Yes indeed...the cheaper the cruise....the cheaper the clientele.

I have always said that I love the Carnival product...but the clientele gets on my last nerve sometimes.

my first cruise was a 4 day on the imagination. i didnt really know what to expect, but, a LARGE portion of the passengers were going all out the entire cruise. my most recent cruise was another 4 day on the destiny. we were surrounded by obviously drunk people as early as the muster drill - i mean obnoxious drunk. and there were groups of wasted passengers like this in every port waiting to get back on the ship.

on our 7 day on the glory, there was not nearly the same "im wasted! wooooo!" party atmosphere. people were there to have a good time, and they did, but it wasnt about trying to fill yourself with as much booze as possible during the cruise.

now, all that being said, i saw the most drunk person i have ever seen on the 7 day cruise. she was so drunk she couldnt get out of the hot tub and fell every few feet she tried to walk.

Generally, the crowds on the 3 and 4 days cruises will be much rowdier than the crowd on 5-day and longer cruises. I wouldn't say necessarily "poorly behaved", but there's definitely a sense of trying to cram in as much fun as possible in a few days. It doesn't bother us at all, but you have to know what you're willing to tolerate. Drunk people don't bother us, (heck, I'm generally maintaining a nice buzz for the entire cruise, myself ;) ) so it's not an issue.

Our first Carnival Cruise was a three day, October Halloween/Wedding Party cruise. I gave up booze a long time ago. It was an interesting cruise to say the least. I figured out that some people had brought on "escorts" as dates. And some of them need escorts to get out of some of the bars. All that glitters is not gold.

Next cruise, the Legend. I wouldn't say sedate because of the crowd, but because most of the bars were closed. That's right, closed. The piano bar was closed and rented out to a barber ship quartet competition, and nothing was opened to replace that. Karaoke was always jammed. Because that's all that was really happening.

The worst cruise for drunks was our favorite ship the Fascination, that couldn't get under the bridge last year due to excessively high tides, and those wonderful bartenders started serving about 12, and we didn't leave until 10 that night, and we hit a storm named Sean, and all heck broke loose with those left over drunks. I never saw so many sick barfing people in my life! And they all disappeared by noon on the first day. We did not have our muster drill until our first day at sea, after that they all crawled off to hide for a few days.:)

The secret is in not partying too hardy on that day of embarking:D

I keep reading that passengers tend to be more poorly behaved on shorter cruises. Any reasons for this? Just curious.

Less time to cram in the partying? I dont know. I do know that my 4 day Imagination Cruise wasnt as bad as I thought. Passengers were a bit more lively but wasnt too bad. Of course we went when it was $400 for the cheapest cabin. I wont chance it on a $175 cruise.

Well said, doing a 50th birthday surprise "party" 3 day cruise in Nov for DH and having some friends join us (their 1st) cruise, I can only HOPE we have people that like to party and have a good time!

We get on your nerves?

I am proud to be cheap.

Inside cabins for me.

You know some CC people get on my nerves but I don't look down my nose at them.

Wow, never really thought of myself and DH as being cheap, let's see:

1. Been married for 25 years.

2. Served 10 years in the Navy.

3. Served 4 in the reserves with one tour of duty in Iraq (7 teammembers of which did not make it back):(

4. Both have worked jobs and paid our bills for the last 30yrs, no welfare.

5. Raised 2 fine young men, one of whom is attending UF and plans becoming a doctor. (GO GATORS)

6. Take care of older and somewhat ailing parents when they are in need.

7. Are there for our friends when they need it.

8. Work hard for my $$$ to spend on such cheap cruises so we can "party" and have a good time.

9. Volunteer at the local shelter, walk for the March of Dimes and head up a blog on Weight Watchers online to help people feel better about themselves while losing weight and getting healthier.

10. Bake goodies and take to a local nursing home.

So, I guess the definition of "cheap" has changed on me and I missed it, thanks for clearing that up for us.

You have a nice day...

Happy Sailing,

No, running in the halls, beating on doors, calling cabins at 4 am, and yelling at the top of one's lungs, cabin doors wide open and running between rooms IS NOT having fun. It's called being inconsiderate to your fellow passengers. There's nothing wrong with having fun with your group, but do you really think that tearing down passengers door decorations, that they have spent time making, is your idea of "FUN" It's rude, and for a child, an example of bad parenting.

I have a 21 year old son and his college roommate that will be sailing with us next April. They will be in an inside cabin near ours. 21 or not, if he even thought of being inconsiderate to another passenger, I would pull him aside and have a talk with him. Late night fun does not equal being rude to others or damaging property.

:):)

And this is the norm?

I don't think so.

What you call "poorly behaved" might be having fun to some of us.

Short cruise means younger crowd and more late night fun.

If you can't handle it don't go.

I'm 61 and go on a least two a year and have a blast.

Not saying we didnt have a great time on our 3 night 'party cruise' it was just me and DH so we could let loose and enjoy ourselves. We plan on doing one 3-4 night getaway a year!

With that being said, this is not a cruise that i would want to take my children on. So yes, i think it is a good idea for people to understand that different cruise home ports and lengths can result in very different experiences.

To me there are two types of vacations...an adults vacation and a family vacation.

We were on the Fascination many years back with a Wine Tasting group....Also on the ship were 500 South Beach partiers (straights)....It was so bad that they had to shut down the pools, because these kids were taking their tops off (the women), and doing many inappropriate things in the pools....

Carnival came up to apologize to our group and told us they would never be allowed back on one of their ships again....

Pretty awful....

They are the party cruises more than likely, of course depending on the time of year as well. Most that take them are probably looking for that atmosphere and expect it. I'll bet the ones that are just trying out a short cruise for their first time could be a little shocked.I always felt it was a mistake to take a 4 day cruise first time out,a seven day cruise would be a better example if one will like cruising for most people, IMO.

Nope, not college kids. It's people trying to squeeze a weeks worth of vacation into a couple of days. The Friday-Monday cruises have a little more of a party atmosphere than most. A lot of locals tend to do these shorter cruises. Work half of a day on Friday and head to the port after lunch. Party Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, then drag yourself home on Monday morning and catch up on all the sleep you missed! Walk into work Tuesday morning and tell all your co-workers what a great time you had!

Wow, that sounds like you read my mind! Except for the half day on Friday - I get to port at 10:30 :)

I don't really think this was a situation re: a shorter cruise but we took a 5 day on the Inspiration for our honeymoon last Oct. We were in U168, which is the second OV cabin aft of the elevators-port side. There was a large family traveling together that had several rooms grouped together. They would keep their cabin doors open and use the hallway as an extension of their personal area. One night, we were in bed, not yet sleeping, but it was late and two of the children, perhaps 4 and 6 were playing hide & seek in the hallway and using the elevator banks as home-base. They tapped on each door as they passed and yelled back and forth to each other. This was a game that they played on a regular basis, I'm guessing they played in the halls-- to keep them out of their parent's cabin and keep them close-by and occupied because this went on mornings and some afternoons as well.

Well I opened the door and very politely asked them to keep their voices and down a bit as we as well as others had an early excrusion the next morning. They must have gone back and said something to a parent because from that point on, it was total hell for us. Ringing phone at all hours, our room service hangers missing each night. Decorations from our door torn or missing etc....... I was sure it was them and because of this incident, as the first call started immediately. I called security and they told me that unless they actually witnessed anything themselves, there was nothing that could be done.

I could understand this if I would have yelled at the child, but I didn't. I just asked for them to please stop the yelling and the running back and forth tapping on the doors as they went through. I would have talked to the mother or father, but they were no where to be found when we opened our door.

The other half of the family group were teenagers sharing adjoining inside cabins caddy-corner from us. They would come back late night 2,3 am and make sure to knock loudly on our cabin door then run into their rooms.

This happend in the middle of the cruise so thankfully we only had to put up with it for a couple of days. I did take down our door decorations and started setting our alarm to put our our room service card at 4:45 am, as they need to be out there by 5am. It was just an example of really bad parenting. The hallway is public space not a playyard. This is just my opinion, for whatever it's worth, but having a group of rooms together and leaving the doors open to yell and run back and forth between rooms is very inconsiderate of other passengers.

We didn't let it ruin our cruise and tried to ignore them as not to exasperate any situations. It was very clear that these were not the kind of people that we could reason or talk to.

:(

We had a smilar experience on a RCCL 7 day Mediterranean, but the issue was more the adults. There was a large Italian family in several balconies opposite us. They (the adults) held loud conversations in the hall at all hours of the night. The kids did some running and knocking on doors, but they did not disturb us as much.

The drunkest person I've ever seen on a cruise was on a 7 night on the Valor after a day in Cozumel. I couldn't believe how intoxicated he was! I immediately made him return to our cabin and sleep it off. My husband cannot hold his tequila!;)

We are doing a 3 day a month from now. A girls get away just to have fun and relax. I'm guessing it'll be a little more of a weekend get away/party type cruise. I'm okay with that ;)

My 4-day on Destiny was a "Girl's Cruise." I was in my 40's and it was the first time I'd ever done a girl's trip and we had so much fun! We ran into several other groups of women doing the same thing, and we had a ball together in the piano bar!

Hahaha, this is too funny...this will probably be my hubby on our upcoming 7 day . I have very rarely seen him really "drunk" but it sure is a sight when he is!!

What's wrong with being cheap?

More people who have money are cheap than those that don't... that's how they get and keep it! :D

I'd LOVE to take advantage of those short $189 Bahamas cruises out of Port Canaveral... but the last time I did some drunken lout vomited all over my shoes on the first night. I was scarred for life.

Haven't taken a short Carnival cruise since then.

We have never taken anything shorter than a 5 day but I can say that you will find some hearty partiers on any ship. Never really had any problems (knock on wood) - just don't go during Spring Break!

My first 3 cruises were 5-days on the Inspiration...then a 7-day on the Dream...during Spring Break. Woo-Hoo!!! When you factored in the Univ. of Kentucky cheerleading squad, the Univ. of Tennessee football team, and what appeared to be half the graduating class of the Univ. of Florida....holy moly, what a trip! AND I had my soon-to-graduate high school 18yo daughter with me. She had a BLAST!! But then again, so did I. Though I must say, probably won't be going on another Spring Break cruise...

I have taken 3day to 7 day cruises, some of the shorter cruises have been nice a pleasant other have been awful. Sometimes you just end up with a boat full of "low-rent" people who do not know how to act, I find it happens rarely but it does. I am not a prude and generally shut the dance clubs down when I am on a cruise, there is a time and place for fun, the cabin corridors are not that place...children and adults running and yelling in the halls at 3 and 4 in the morning = poor parenting, neglect and a poor example.

My DH and I sailed on the Fascination out of J-Ville this past May. We had a lot of High School Grads..we had a lot of College grads.

We had worried about what would it be like..drunks....kids carrying on in the hallways....romance starved college kids..

STOP!

We had a great time. The young people on that ship could not have been nicer. Two of them, at different times, played on our Trivia Team with us, and both times we won ships on a stick. They both carried them home too.

Everytime I would run into a group of college kids, they would be.......opening the elevator door for me..waiting for me to get out....opening doors...saying Mam a lot...

I think most of the Students were from Georgia, some from LOTS from the U. of Georgia... FAMU, Florida, Troy in Alabama..Tennesse STate...and they were a credit to their families and thier schools.

I did not see a single drunk on the entire ship. Most of the people were from Georgia or surrounding states, they were very laid back...no crowds...if tables were full at lunch..someone always invited us to sit with them..SOMETHING NEW..and we have cruised a lot.

We will sail on the Fascination again.. Key West was the most enjoyable port we have visited in years. And I loved the ship. The atmosphere. The smallness. Easy to get to places. I loved the no long lines or crowds.

I can recomment the Fascination. Now in summer..and holidays when grade schoolers and High School is out....don't know. But the ship always sails full. Something must be right about it.

Try Jacksonville. More family..more southern ..more laid back..slow talking ..what's the rush...Love it.
