Dress Code in Alaska

Recommended Posts

Good evening CC friends,

We're booked on the Silver Shadow September 5th, 2013. Seward to Vancouver. This will be our first time in Alaska.

What kind of clothes do you take? We realize the weather will be chilly but how chilly will it be? What about dressing for shore excursions? Dog sledding on a glacier requires warm clothes and boots. Do they supply boots and overcoats for excursions like this?

Need your help with this one.

Sincere thanks and kind regards,

ScottToronto

PS. Is anyone joining us on Voyage 3327?

Hi Scott -

Sounds like a great trip. We did Alaska in 2009, and they did not supply any clothing on the Shadow. We took ski parkas, ski pants, layers of warm clothing, warm boots and most importantly, rain pants. We had lots of rain and cold weather on our trip in late September so we were glad to have the warm clothing.

Inside the ship was nice and warm, but outside was a different story!

Hope you have a wonderful trip. Say hi to Jay and your family for us.

The key for Alaska is to layer your clothing.

It could be rainy, windy, cloudy, partly cloudy and even sunny and dry or a combination of these not just day to day but hour by hour. Out on deck it will be cooler and could be cold.

Be sure to bring a water proof jacket, fleece and or sweater, warm pants, a couple of pairs of shoes to wear in port and if one is waterproof all the best, gloves, hat, and even a scarf. A rain poncho is helpful too.

You just never know what the weather will be like and you want to be able to add or remove clothing easily.

Scott,

All of the recommendations above really hit the mark. And, if your moniker indicates where you live, you'll probably have all of the necessities as outlined.

I would also recommend a really good rain cap that is waterproof and has a wide stitched brim for extra protection. They make many that are super lightweight and collapsible these days, so they can fit in your pocket until needed.

Have a great trip. Alaska is fantastic!
