Gotta love The Weather Channel

Interesting. I have seen her speed listed as anywhere from 22.5kts (NCL site) to 25kts (Wikipedia). NCL lists this as their "cruising speed" as opposed to max speed. I saw one site that said max speed 24kts. If she hit 30 I can guarantee you it was with a strong tail wind and at full throttle! Those engines don't like to run that hard for long, so maybe she was sprinting past something.

Where is the Gem hiding from all this?

I don't know where she is hiding, but I will be more than happy to see her!

The Gem cam is back online!

Doesn't look bad really. Some people on Facebook are saying the Gem is off the coast of Mass.

Also looks like the Jewel will be having a fun and comfortable cruise for the rest of the voyage!

While I wouldn't have wanted to be on the Jewel last night, at the moment I would rather be on her than be in New York City. Sunshine makes happy cruisers. :D

There's a thread on the Carnival boards started by someone who's on the Miracle. It doesn't sound like it was all that bad last night for them either. Didn't the Miracle take the same route as the Jewel?

Yes, the Miracle was trailing the Jewel by a few hours down the coast.

Some info from Trex-D on another thread:

Just got word from our friend on Explorer. They have 25' swells. A window blew out in the buffet area, so no buffet today. They are on deck 9 and have some water in their stateroom.

Captain told them they are going to Bermuda. Will be interesting if they wake up in Nassau.

Looks like the Jewel came out the best out of all those ships running the gauntlet last night

Go Jewel! Love that ship. :D

Truth be told, I do want to sail through a storm at least once. Being on a large ship plowing through big waves would be an awesome experience (as long as there is a forward facing observation lounge!!).

sdmike ~ thanks for posting what I was seeing. If I could figure out how to do that properly, I had hoped to do the same. So glad you were able to post them, but only wish I had brought the subject up about two hours prior, when the Jewel was in very slight seas, but the Luna was under very dark skies, and absolutely enormous waves!

Good news all!

The Jewel is back on radar and is still making 20kts off the coast of Georgia in relatively light winds and seas. The cargo ship that was behind her up off NJ has been her escort the entire way and is just a few miles away. No sign of the Miracle or the RCCL ship yet.

I forgot to turn the labels on, but that blue ship in the center is the Jewel. :D

The Weather Channel is a complete joke unless you want to check your local radar. Jim Cantore has cried wolf so many times I'm surprised he's still on the air. One of these days people are just going to ignore their melodramatics completely since they exaggerate EVERY storm.

Ya no doubt Mike, I don't think the Jewel class ships were design with top speed in mind lol.

When I was on her we only touched 28 kts for a little bit, but was at 27 kts for about 2-3 hours. Can't say whether or not she can really do 30kts without a tail wind, but sustained 27kts for a large passenger ship with her hull profile and stubby bow is still really impressive.

BTW this was in the pre-Kevin Sheehan days with lower fuel prices, so I don't know if we will see any of these ships touch those speeds without some sort of emergency anymore.

I can honestly tell you that you don't want to do it on a car ferry crossing the North Sea from Brugge, Belgium to Dover, England. I was doing well until I had to use the head. Needless to say many sick people had been there before me and the odor was just enough to make me lose it. :( Rest of the trip was miserable.

We're sitting in Port Canaveral right now. The run from NYC was interesting, but not traumatic. We could always walk through the ship (the number of women on high heels was amazing last night), and only had a max of 20 foot waves. Lots of wind the whole time. No one was allowed outside until this morning.

It's a bit chilly and windy here. :)

Most annoying bit so far is Budget being out of cars, despite 2 reservations.
