Increased Price of Cagney's

Most of the times in the last few years we found Cagney's to be almost empty for dinner. One time we even were the only table. At 8 PM... I guess the price is too high compared to what it offers. What I find unbelievable is that they almost never change the menu. I mean, we like the shrimp cocktail, but we loved it 5 years ago... I guess we are not really tempted to throw in the USD 75 p.p. for the same starter, same steak, the same few glasses of wine and the same lobster tail as an extra. Although my steak always tasted good. If Cagney's lowered the price a bit and revamped the concept a bit, I am sure revenue for NCL would increase dramatically and we would be excited again.

I frequently read posts on this board from passengers who pay hundreds (sometimes thousands) for drinks, casino gambling and bingo. I have none of those expenses, but am delighted to pay comparatively small amounts (less than a game of bingo) for quiet, half-filled specialty restaurants.

My March 9th Cruise is still showing $25...I'm guessing the $30 is only taking effect on a certain date and after?

It must do as I only paid $25 for our cruise that leaves in 3 weeks time.

There are 5 of us on the June cruise so the $5 soon adds up.

I remember La Cucina being $10 and 2 for 1 in 2009 - so the prices soon rise.

Recent news, last few weeks, tells of beef prices rapidly increasing. A huge number of feed lots in the US are closed or are for sale because of recent droughts and the super high price of corn used for cattle feed. The price of hamburger in the grocery last week was unbelievable. Guess Cagneys is going to have to adjust prices accordingly since steak is their specialty.

I agree. Beef prices have shot through the ceiling, and that is likely what is behind the Cagney's price increase.

For our April 13 sailing on the Epic, the price for Cagneys shows $30. It sure makes the $52 discounted price for pre-booking Cagneys, Le Bistro and the Italian restaurant a much better deal! You are now saving $13 instead of $8. Well, until they decide to increase the discount rate as well.

edited to say I just checked and the new package deal IS $5 more, it is now $57. I guess I lucked out, because I got the $52 deal as I booked at the 55 days out price a couple of weeks ago, and the price was only $52.

Here's a good recap of that: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/28/us/drought-fells-a-texas-towns-biggest-employer.html?ref=us

Cagney's is delish but always half empty (we were the only table one night)...

The $30 is only justified if they've improved quality a great deal.

We've been so disappointed our last two times at Cagneys that we haven't bothered going our last few cruises.

This has been pretty much our experience as well. We went last time on Dawn but the prior two times skipped it do to having a poor meal prior to that. At $30 each we will be skipping it again.

The price of beef has gone up recently and is expected to rise again.Naturally they will increase the pricing and decrease the quality in their steakhouse specialty restaurants in order to meet their profit margins.

We sailed on the Dawn last month and booked Cagney's La Cuccina and Le Bistro. The meal at Cagney's was very poor.I had to send my meal back twice and it was still not satisfactory.i have had better steak at roadside diners than thay served in Cagney's.Now that the price has risen to $30 we have no intentions of ever eating there again.Others related unsatisfactory experiences at Cagney's as well.

La Cuccina was good and Le Bistro superb so our specialty dining experience was salvaged.

We did notice that all three venues were poorly attended with lots of vacant seats, except that Le Bistro filled up as people exited the Showroom Theatre at 8:00 PM.

I agree. Maybe they could at least serve prime beef. I know aged would be too much to ask for. They raised the price for the Italian restaurant last fall by $5 but introduced a far better menu to justify it.

I think you'd see a far higher price than $30 if they were to serve prime beef.

Might have to swap Cagnies first night for Moderno.

Same as others, never had a problem as a walk any night the last few cruise to any place except Tepanyaki and..

on the Jade Xmas cruise when Gary Glading and the band did their set in La Cucina, sold out so had to put on some charm to get a table, every seat was taken for the duration of his set(2hrs) even the captain turned up with his family for that one.

IT was worth the $10 that night

I would pay it. The quality of the choice angus they are using has gone downhill since they changed suppliers a couple of years ago now. The best cut now is the filet and it is not angus. I can get the same filet at the Bistro and now it is $10 less with better appetizers.

It was not uncommon for us to eat at Cagneys 4 or 5 times on a cruise. Now usually one and done. Last cruise 4 dinners at the Bistro.

I could not agree more! We consider the dining out experience part of the entertainment. We do not do it every night but it is nice that it's there when we want it.

Le Bistro is great and we love the new Moderno.

Maybe I just missed the announcement. But I can see on my April cruise that Cagney's upcharge is now $30 per.

Sorry this sounds pessimistic, but since Cagney's fee is being increased to $30, I suspect the other speciality restaurants will follow at a future date. My personal favorite is LeBistro and now with a $10 difference between it and Cagney's, it is even more appealing to me. However, having said that, a $5 increase would not deter me from dining there if I really wanted to. I enjoy mixing in a specialty restaurant or two during a 7 day cruise. I feel the specialty restaurant experience is worth the additional fee. Some people do not and will not pay the additional fees to dine in specialty restaurants. That is what I like about freedom of choice.

Dear Cruise Critic Members,

In our ongoing efforts to continue to improve our specialty restaurants, we are in the process of making enhancements to the menu at Cagney’s and therefore the new cover charge will be $30 per person. The new charge will begin rolling out to the fleet on April 13 starting with Norwegian Epic. We hope our guests will enjoy the new menu offerings as they continue to receive an extraordinary dining experience in our fleet-wide steakhouse.

Best,

Norwegian Cruise Line Public Relations team

Thanks NCL, that's good to hear. I like the idea of a re-vamped menu :)

Just a thought to people comparing cruising to years gone by, my first cruise was in 1984 and I paid $1050.00 with 4 to an inside cabin. The reality is that the experience has changed, but the price has also come down instead of increasing. Cuts need to be made because people insist on paying bottom dollar. Even with a specialty every night of your cruise, you're still way ahead financially. I can't imagine anyone would ever charge $4200.00 for an inside cabin for 4 these days.

Before everyone gets crazy let me say that an enhanced menu does not necessarily mean a better one. Costs everywhere are going up, especially food prices. I am sure most of the increase is keeping up with the price of beef, etc.

La Cucina revamped the menu and increased the charge to $15. I did not think the food was better and actually preferred the former menu. The menu gets revamped to save money (like it does in all restaurants). Rarely does a menu get revamped to give customer better options. It gets limited to reduce costs.

I mean, really am I the only one that watches Restaurant Impossible :)

I just hope that the enhancements don't take away from Cagney's steakhouse focus since that is my DH's favorite place to eat (since he's shellfish allergic - it's one of the safest of the restaurants for him).

We eat there every other night while aboard. (Yup, he likes Cagney's! :D)

I have to disagree (nothing new here) I think the new menu is a huge improvement. I posted a PDF of it before and most agreed. I will have to find it again. It was by no means a cost cutting change. The addition of the lobster pasta speaks to that. Hopefully the changes at Cagneys will be as good.
