Venice Airport

Our July cruise on the Riviera ends in Venice, and we have not been there since the new airport has opened.

What is the best way to get from the ship to the airport. Do we need to take a water taxi like we did to the old airport or can you go by car.

There's no new airport in Venice.....but it does have two of them. The main Marco Polo Airport built a new terminal just over ten years ago, but this didn't change travel to and from the city, and there is Treviso Airport about 20 miles from the city, which is mainly served by the ultra low cost carriers.

There is a bus service that goes to the airport that is very comfortable, efficient and not expensive. The site for the bus is atvo.it Make your own arrangements rather than paying for the ridiculous cost O charges for transfers.

I agree, Brian. Yes, a water taxi is more expensive but you're in Venice. You can take a bus anywhere else in the world.

If you stay at the Regina hotel the day after, they have also a water taxi....it is the most enjoyable way from my experience

We just got back from the Aegean Gems cruise on Riviera which started in Venice and thus we made the journey in reverse. A taxi from the airport to the cruise terminal cost 46 €.

Our cruise ended in Athens and Oceania quoted $219 for a taxi transfer from Piraeus to Athens airport. We simply got off the ship, collected our luggage and got a taxi from the rank outside the terminal. Cost was 49 € - a fraction of what Oceania were asking.

Last year our O cruise on the Marina ended in Venice. We took a water taxi and if I remember correctly it was 80 euros.(it was at 4am since we had a 6 am flight). It was worth it. The only rip off was when we got dropped off at the airport. They had all these taxi/shuttles to take you from the water taxi to the terminal. It is walkable and there are really good signs to give you directions. I would say it is about a 10 to 15 minute walk and if you have roller bags it is no big deal. Since we had never been to the airport before we took the "shuttle" that was another 20 euros and took maybe 2 minutes. Next time I will walk.

Hi Dlouise.

Yes.

I remember Marco Polo in 2001! And it was revamped in 2002 just as you recall. Arriving at a decent time depends on when your flight departs. If planning to leave the ship directly for the airport for a flight that departs before 7am better be off the ship by 5am and to the airport by 5:30am.

The airport opens at 5am. We were there a week ago and happy to have checked in early, as the line begins to lengthen after that time. We visit every year and have run into problems in the past checking luggage, particularly on weekends from May until September. If you plan to depart directly from the ship, taxis are very efficient. Yet if you plan for an early morning departure to airport, water taxi is probably best, and very James Bond. 125EU plus tip. Not much has changed!

We departed from Marco Polo for a 6:45am flight last week via water taxi from our hotel at 4:30am. Yet we are both crazy after our first nearly missed flight from VCE a few years back. It was a weekend, and economy flight on Lufthansa. We were in line to check baggage two hours prior, but because of multiple problems nearly missed the flight.

Email if we can be of any help.

Hi, We have an 11:15AM flight to Rome on a Saturday! We plan on leaving the ship at about 7:30 which should give us enough time to check bags etc.

Thank you for all of your help.

Heavens to Betsy! I hope you are just planning on a taxi right from the port to Marco Polo. What is all this water taxi business? O tried to tell us no taxis would be available and that was not true. Taxis were waiting and we shared one with another couple. Just give yourself time. Collect your luggage and let hubby walk up to secure a cab and you'll be off.
