jakkojakko Posted June 12, 2013 #1 Share Posted June 12, 2013 According a local newspaper, the Nieuw Amsterdam came close to grounding on a beach in Split Croatia. On the very short video it seems to be very windy and the (stern?) anchor might be dragging. http://www.cruiselawnews.com/2013/06/articles/collisions/did-the-holland-america-line-new-amsterdam-nearly-run-aground-in-split-croatia/ http://dnevnik.hr/vijesti/hrvatska/citateljica-matea-samo-smo-gledali-hoce-li-se-kruzer-zabiti-u-obalu-ili-ne-bila-je-totalna-panika---290080.html

rkacruiser Posted June 12, 2013 #13 Share Posted June 12, 2013 Split can be a tough port in which to tender. I recall in 2008 the Amsterdam had to cancel the port call because of the high winds and high seas. Yet, there were some entertainers or other crew who had to be put ashore at that port. I remember watching the tender taking them to shore bobbing and weaving as it struggled to get from the ship into the harbor, and then back again. If Captain van Zaane had tried to get guests ashore, there would have been many sea-sick folks. The tender crew on that morning earned every penny of their salary!
