duct tape Posted June 26, 2013 #3 Share Posted June 26, 2013 Thanx, 57 Varieties, all I have to do is figure it out! If that is gratis and it comes over the internet...so does e-mail...?
57 varieties Posted June 26, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted June 26, 2013 I am not too sure about email. I think they would have trumpeted that too if it were the case...
Stumblefoot Posted June 26, 2013 #5 Share Posted June 26, 2013 Thanks 57 Varities for the link. This service was available to us on our Jun 9 voyage on the Cloud. However, I had no idea it was free. There was no mention in the onboard materials, or the Chronicles. I just assumed there was a cost to the service as it would consume purchased internet minutes and was only accessible via the login page of the Cloud's wifi system. I'll have to check it out the next time I'm aboard!
swindy Posted June 26, 2013 #6 Share Posted June 26, 2013 No mention of this service becoming available on the Spirit? How will the bandwith cope with this extra demand?
Rare gdlamberth Posted June 26, 2013 #7 Share Posted June 26, 2013 My read of the news release indicates the "Streaming Movies" (and by inference, the newspapers) will be available from a sort of "electronic library." The BW consumption (mobile device to ship's router) has never been an issue. That's a piece of cake (coverage in a big metal box is a bit of an issue though:o). The BW issue has always been the satellite uplink. So if I'm right...big if;), there shouldn't be a BW problem. Ships downloads newspapers in at their convenience (or their SA allocates the necessary BW) and make them available to the pax over a Local Wireless network. Better than killing trees making a hard copy of newspapers and is a lot less labor intensive also. Seems SS may be leading the way for cruise lines to join the late 20th Century in IT:eek: Greg
eastwoodboy Posted June 26, 2013 #8 Share Posted June 26, 2013 Looks like a good move but will I also get the benefit of hearing the films from half a dozen other balconies?
farbster Posted June 26, 2013 #9 Share Posted June 26, 2013 I wonder if they'll still have the option of getting the paper delivered to your door and will they cut back on the VOD in the room? I've rarely used the VOD in the room as there are no headphones...
duct tape Posted June 26, 2013 #10 Share Posted June 26, 2013 I have a friend who is currently on the Cloud. He says it is working very well. No Internet connection needed.

Now I really question why we were encouraged to view the nice DVD collection when we were onboard, when we could have watched a new movie instead. duct tape Posted June 26, 2013 #12 Share Posted June 26, 2013 Maybe, if it is functional all the time.
Rare Silver Spectre Posted June 27, 2013 #13 Share Posted June 27, 2013 The newspaper option cannot come too soon, although it will be interesting to see if they retain the print option, and maybe charge for it.
Emtbsam Posted July 7, 2013 #14 Share Posted July 7, 2013 I wish I had known about it when I was on the Cloud this past week! Too bad they didn't tell passengers about it.
Stumblefoot Posted July 7, 2013 #15 Share Posted July 7, 2013 Too bad they didn't tell passengers about it. My thoughts exactly after disembarking the Cloud when you embarked.
Wellseasoned Posted July 10, 2013 #16 Share Posted July 10, 2013 Yes, this was new on our just completed Cloud voyage. When you go to your browser on your laptop, I-pad, etc., there is a new sleek page which appears and allows you to choose to see the streaming movies, etc., or go to the internet. if you choose the latter, you are switched to the usual internet log-in, where you buy or use internet time. The streaming items don't require you to use your paid internet time. They did not provide information or instruction about this, and I don't know if it was available on the ship computers- doubt it since they can't have people sitting in the internet center watching movies for hours. Rare Silver Spectre Posted September 4, 2013 #21 Share Posted September 4, 2013 We still have printed papers on the Whisper and the staff do not seem to have heard anything about when the change will be implemented here.

eastwoodboy Posted October 15, 2013 #23 Share Posted October 15, 2013 Still wondering if this has spread after the introduction on Cloud. It was not on Spirit mid September and begining to think there have been some problems so SS are just going to let the idea fade away. Anyone have any other ideas. Rare Silver Spectre Posted October 15, 2013 #24 Share Posted October 15, 2013 Friends who were on the Cloud in September said there was no sign of it and the the ship was still providing printed newspapers. (Thats assuming that The Daily Mail still qualifies)
