At-sea days?

Hang out in the Library. Play Trivia. Nap. Sit on veranda and watch sea go by. Finally have time for High Tea in Horizons. Hang out by the pool. Read. Talk with my DH, reflecting on the joys of traveling and how much we are enjoying our cruise. Spa appointments (I would set that up before departure.) And I guess there are organized activities too. I love sea days!

They will have things to do if you want..Bridge, trivia, lectures, bingo, golf games, street fair (not all sea days) cooking demos etc

I personally like to relax & read depending on how port intensive the cruise is

YMMV

After our first Trans Atlantic I was asked what we did. My reply: "I don't know, but it took us all day to do it."

My favorite pastime is to get a chaise lounge under the track (i.e., not in the sun) and read, read, read. Full disclosure: falling asleep in the chair often occurs. It is so nice NOT to have to do anything. True luxury.

We usually take expedition cruises so we enjoy the occasional sea day. They provide a nice break from the activity of multiple landings we have on most days. The luxury for us is knowing that we can sleep in and get up for a late breakfast. After that, we usually play it by ear.

After years of cruise trips I now look for cruises with as many sea days as possible...at least 50% min On my next cruise of 33 days 21 will be at sea....

The sense of being detached from the world is wonderful as there are not many places where you can do it. We don't call, send e-mail use the internet and avoid news papers and the freedom is a joy

Have a leisurely breakfast. Have a leisurely lunch. Have a leisurely dinner. Maybe have a leisurely afternoon tea or canapes.

Put a serious dent in my Prestige Beverage Package! :D

Sit on deck or out on my balcony watching the passing scenery or the sea. After all, that's why I chose to be on a ship in the first place...

Yes to all of the above. Plus, I enjoy meeting and getting to know some of my fellow passengers, and having the opportunity to meet and interact with the crew. Sea days tend to be more relaxed, so there is more time for just simple visiting.

O passengers tend to be well educated, well traveled and knowledgeable. I've learned from them and had a great time "swapping stories", not just about travel, but about life in general. And once in a while a crew member has a few minutes to spare to discuss their country and give me a glimpse of how they view the world as well. Both fascinating.

One of the nice features of the R ships, particularly if you're on a scenic sailing, are the cabanas on deck 11 forward. Lovely, relaxing way to spend the day.

I had one in the Caribbean on the Regatta and it made the cruise.

From the website:

The Sun Deck, located forward on Deck 11, is an indulgent tranquil oasis with eight private Cabanas, featuring our luxurious Balinese Day Bed for two. With stunning ocean vistas, you can enjoy total relaxation as your personal cabana valet caters to your every whim. Each private cabana features the following amenities:

  • Luxurious Balinese Day Bed for Two
  • Cabana Service including delivery of menu items from Waves Grill
  • Fruit Skewers served in the morning
  • Ice Cream served in early afternoon
  • Afternoon Tea served with sweets and savories
  • Refreshing Iced Towel Wraps
  • Complimentary 10-Minute Chair Massage*
  • Exclusive 25% discount on Oceania Spa by Mandara select services performed in the spa on port days

Lots of good advice given. Just want to add that sea days are also great for working on craft projects (knitting, embroidery, needlepoint, etc.), playing ping pong, shuffleboard and golf putting to earn those oh-so-valuable Big O points.

Oh yes -- the Casino and Boutiques are open all day.

The libraries on the R ships are the best of any ships I have been on. Not only well stocked but comfortable with ocean views and a beautiful ceiling. Also a fireplace. If you are a reader, you can sppend a lot of time there.

I love the library in the R ships on a sea day as well, but then I pray for beautiful weather ... because if it isn't good for pool lounging, too many other people have the same idea!

Thanks to all posters for their wonderful responses!

I'm In the "praying for good weather so others are not in the library" group, but am a bit concerned for my fellow travelers, who are more kinesthetically inclined.....perhaps the matinee idea.....

Again, thank you--love the posts!

I love to read but the library is the last place I want to be. It is usually full of sprawling sleeping bodies, some of them with mouths hanging open, drool dribbling down their chins. Others are snoring.

Perhaps if some photos were posted and they saw what they look like, they would choose to sleep in their rooms.....

I find Horizons much more pleasant with the view and chairs that are comfortable but not especially conducive to sleeping.

Maybe when the smoking area is enclosed after dry dock Horizons will be

usable by those of us who would not like to sit in smoke. For now the cabin,

open deck or library are preferable.

In reality, very few of us and perhaps a beagle, can smell any smoke when sitting almost anywhere on the starboard side of Horizons :D

If you do, than your sense of smell is truly very acute and a simple enclosure (like on O class ships) would not be sufficient for you. You would require a room with doors that close, IMO.

I have never smelled smoke in any part of Horizons except when I entered the enclosure. I am an avid anti smoker but sometimes reading these threads I think people make way too big a deal bout smoking. It's a big ship. You can always find someplace smoke free and most of O's ships are.
