Smoking Allowed on Balconies in Australia?

Recommended Posts

Dont get me started!! A friend of mine is on the dole and is a heavy smoker. She puts her next packet ahead of buying food etc and having her children over. I despair ....

It is a very addictive substance, and also is habit forming (i.e peopel who smoke associate it with after a meal or the like) so even with nicotine patches they still miss the smoking.

Cruising is also very addictive but not as bad for you.:D

According to a thread on the Royal Caribbean board, smoking on balconies will be banned as of 1st January 2014.

My question has been answered! Both balcony cruises are booked for next year. Thanks RCI!

I wonder how many cancellations will occur because of the new policy? Mind you, many more may decide to book with them also because of it! Time will tell.

they didnt say it was caused by a cigarette they think going by the report

It was probably caused by a discarded cigarette end

heating combustible materials on a balcony

They believe a discarded cigarette butt was sucked into the balcony causing a fire of the combustible balcony furniture.

Yes, that will be one less thing to worry about no matter what side you are on.:D

We were in a balcony cabin on a 28 night cruise to Tahiti on the Sun Princess before they banned smoking on balconies. Our up-wind neighbour often smoked on their balcony. When he/she smoked, we just had to go inside and close the door. :) When smoking was permitted, we didn't feel we could approach the person and ask him/her to refrain.

I was just reading the Royal Caribbean board about the new Smoking Policy change. One of the posts said that on ALL Australian Inineraries that smoking is NOT allowed in the casino because of certain laws. Is this true? Just trying to get all the facts before my Queensland cruise!:) Thanks!

I've down 3 RCL cruises and don't believe I've seen anyone smoking in the Casino ,all congregated on the starboard side of the ship

That's correct no smoking in casino or anywhere inside the ship

Oh! That was MY POST! That makes me feel special! ;)

In my experience the ONLY places that passengers have been allowed to smoke on RCI ships on Australian Itineraries have been:

* Starboard side of the pool deck

* Starboard side of the promenade deck

* Cabin balconies.

The thread on the RCI board says that smoking will no longer be allowed on cabin balconies as of 1st January 2014.

Certainly there has been no smoking in the casino on the Australian RCI cruised DW & I have done.

October 29, 2006 - Update

Investigators into the fire, have released their final report as to the cause of the fire. A cigarette butt has been blamed for the fire. Maritime safety authorities conclude that the fire spread quickly because of its location on a balcony where plastic partitions fed the flames

Due to the location where the fire began, on a passenger balcony, it is highly likely a passenger is to blame for the fire.

It is also highly likely that passenger knows they started the fire, yet nobody has come forward to take the blame.

It certainly sounds like it was caused by someone smoking on a balcony.

The sooner the cruiseline match smoking policy equal to land based venues, I personally will be happy.

I agree, I think that smoking at least ten metres away from any building would be a good start. So if someone wants to smoke they can wait until port.:p

Thanks for the info Sparky74, Chester32 and David1951. This will be my first visit to Australia and my first cruise on RCI. So, I read all the boards that might help me gather info. I have to admit, I've been lurking on this board for a while now. I'm learning a lot!:D

Lurking can be quite beneficial and unlike other areas of life it is allowed on the CC boards.:D

I saw on Facebook that Royal Caribbean has changed their smoking policy and smoking will not be allowed on balconies after Jan 2014. Does anyone know if this is true?

yes its true but the smokers will get by, not many cruise lines allow smoking on the balcony now

Maybe not so good the except I saw says they are increasing the amount of outdoors space where smoking will be allowed:mad:.

Sue

maybe they could get rid of a few deck chairs on the main deck and make the smoking area bigger seeing people cant smoke on the balconies now

I do not know for sure (haven't been on RCI) but I would assume that they can currently smoke nearly anywhere on the open decks, so come 1 Jan 2014 this will become restricted to designated areas (like X) as well.:D
