Smoking Allowed on Balconies in Australia?

Recommended Posts

Couldn't help but reply to this one

But get sick and tired of people whingeing about smokers and carrying on I know its not good for you and you don't want it blown in your space but

They have paid the same amount of money as you to enjoy a balcony cabin which means they can do whatever they want so if you don't like it go with another cruise line that doesn't allow smoking on balcony's

In my experience I would say 99.9% of smokers are considerate of non smokers but to post a thread and stress about smokers well?

By the way I am a non smoker but I do not worry if the neighbour lights up

I still hope you enjoy your cruise regardless of what eventuates

I can see your point, but I would hardly say the OP was whingeing, just asking for clarification. You must admit, smoking being allowed on th ebalconies is a rarety in Australian waters.:D

(Smoking Allowed on Balconies in Australia? )

is what was asked.

Normally, people read the post to find out what was asked, rather than the title alone.

If you just read the title than you'd get lots of useless answers to threads where only something general was put in.

Hi there!

I've just been reading that some Royal Caribbean ships allow smoking on starboard-side balconies. As we have a balcony booked on that side to the South Pacific, I just want to find out if this is a fact or not whilst I've got the opportunity to change cabins if need be.

Thanks! Gae

Yes, I was just using the CC boards to ask for information! Thanks for those that pointed this fact out to a previous poster. I've found out so much about cruising from these boards I wonder how anyone manages without them! :D

That's just what they're doing... finding out if the company allows smoking on balconies or not...

The OP has 41 days experience cruising with Royal Caribbean

so never been on the starboard side?

I was not having a shot at any one in particular just tired of peoples complaining about smokers

and changing cabins because your neighbours might be smokers is not whingeing?

I do agree with you MiCcanberra it is rare to allow smoking on balcony's

and I am sure it wont be to long before it comes to a halt

Yes, smoking on balconies is dying out, (pun intended).

In all my cruises I have always been starboard, it is what I prefer and this was nothing to do with smoking, just my preference. So yes, it is possible that Gae has never been starboard before. If I thought that there was chance of smoking on the port side but not on the starboard, I too would look to change cabins so that I would not need to feel discomfort or whinge. As it turns out it is a crap shoot as to if your neighbours are smokers or not.:D

This is correct - our only previous balcony was on the Port side. This next booking is for a Junior Suite on the Starboard side for a surprise cruise to the South Pacific for my elderly Mum. :)

As it's costing a whole lot more than normal, I just want it to be 'special' for her so that's the only reason I was asking for information.

I think you might be able to talk to the smoker next door and ask if you could come to some arrangement with them, so that both of you can enjoy the balcony you have paid for.

When my DH was a smoker, he would always try to accommodate non-smokers who asked nicely. But if someone "told " him, when he was doing somethign that was allowed, he would not react nearly as favourably!

I hope you enjoy your cruise.

This is with my case too!

I have refrained from smoking when asked by a person on many many occasions as I would presume the majority of smokers would, after al many smokers have family and friends who do not smoke so in this day and age are very used to non smokers concerns But the moment a person told me to stop smoking or started the silly smoke away wave I enforced my right to smoke in a smoking area and ignored their fruitless attempts to stop me until the end.

Gae If you have a smoker on a balcony next cabin, the smoker/smokers will not take offence to you telling them you dont like it much in a polite manner, they wouldnt necessarily stop smoking on the balcony but the majority of smokers would soon inform you that they were going to light up so as you can go back inside.

You have to realize that many smoking cruisers pay extra for a balcony just so they can smoke without constant restriction,

I was a very heavy smoker and I know a lot of heavy smokers but all self included have butted out in the past with a non smokers genuine concern:)

As you and others have suggested, if it's an issue I will be very polite about asking for some separate time perhaps! We are morning people so like to see the sunrise from our balcony. Night-time we find it too chilly to be outside usually. Anyway, I'm sure some common courtesy from myself and any neighbouring smoker will solve any potential problems!

We could hardly use our balcony on our Rhapsody cruise and we had to keep the door closed due the ladies next door smoking. Fortunately we didn't have the same problem on the Radiance.

This is exactly what I am saying get real ,the ship is moving and more than likely the wind is blowing yet you say you could hardly use your balcony? come on bit over the top

But anyway enough said and until they change the rules that's how it is

Just so you know, BOTH sides of all RC ships allow smoking on all private balconies on all decks. If you book a balcony/jr suite/grand suite, there is always a chance someone next door will be smoking. It's pot luck and you can't book a particular side of the ship to avoid it.

It absolutely amazes me that RCI allow smoking on balconies after knowing what happened to Star Princess a few years ago, I would have thought the ban would have been universal across all cruise lines.

I think it is just a matter of time.:D

I am a non-smoker (never ever even had a puff-never interested me), however, I'm not against smokers smoking in areas that allows smoking. I do think though that after that Star Princess fire, smoking should NOT be allowed on any balcony. It was a miracle that only 1 life was lost in that fire.

It is only just recently that Cunard stopped people smoking in staterooms. next year, it won't be allowed on balconies either.

I can remember the time when people were allowed to smoke in planes, with the request that people not smoke cigars.

I don't smoke, and never liked people smoking in rooms and dislike it when I have to walk past public entrances surrounded by smokers, but I dont have an issue with people smoking on balconies.

RCI also allows smoking in the casino,s unless its an Australian type RCI cruise so i think it wont be long before RCI,s Australian cruises put the exclusion on balconies as well but i doubt they will ever do the same with USA cruises until the older generations are dead and burred so of no interest to profits.

I remember smoking on air planes and it seems now unbelievable but some people would be very shocked to find out that some pilots and other crew still smoke on board during long haul flights.

Yes, but only as long as they don't do it in the toilets as that is not allowed.

Unless something has changed recently or I am very mistaken, from my experience on Rhapsody & Radiance (DW & I am are non-smokers) RC ships in Australia allow smoking on all balconies, not just starboard. The 'public' smoking areas are starboard on pool deck and promenade deck. No inside smoking allowed.

rkmw - too quick :-)

According to a thread on the Royal Caribbean board, smoking on balconies will be banned as of 1st January 2014.

there's going to be some happy & unhappy people, smoking has been banned on princess for the past 18 months and things seem to be going ok

you will more than likely get the odd person to have a sneaky smoke on the balcony as long as they dont leave the ashtray there where the steward will find it

The official "Marine Accident Investigation Branch" report on the Star Princess fire is online at

http://www.maib.gov.uk/cms_resources.cfm?file=/Star%20Princess.pdf

It is interesting, and sobering, reading. There is a short (just over 1 page) synopsis at pages 1-2, just after the preliminary pages.

they didnt say it was caused by a cigarette they think going by the report

It was probably caused by a discarded cigarette end

heating combustible materials on a balcony

Yes, well the optimist says the chances are 4 times more likely that the neighbours are non smoking, 20 vs 80 per cent.

I honestly do not know why anyone would or can afford to smoke now with the prices so high (and going to go higher as announced at budget).:D

Dont get me started!! A friend of mine is on the dole and is a heavy smoker. She puts her next packet ahead of buying food etc and having her children over. I despair ....
