kinosh Posted June 18, 2016 #276 Share Posted June 18, 2016 :D Funny Above ^^^^ ... and true! The last thing I want is to have something like that hanging around my neck on a cruise. We had to do that at " vendor trade shows" and "conventions" so reminds us of the four letter word -- W-O-R-K. LuLu ~~~~ I was sorting through all of my lanyards from my trade shows and conventions, trying to figure out which one I should use for my cruise. Then I read this post and said to myself, *** am I doing? Thanks for the laugh!
Nicstar Posted June 19, 2016 #277 Share Posted June 19, 2016 Just back from first ever cruise. Didn't want to use a lanyard. Didn't take one. Didn't use one. Never felt I was inconvenienced by not having one. Never once found myself in a situation where I thought to myself "boy, that would have been way easier/more convenient" if I had a lanyard". I actually found it strange when fellow passengers asked me where my lanyard was?? Next cruise? I won't use one then either. Sail and sign card just slips nicely into a pocket of my bag. Given I always had camera, lip balm, water bottle, to take with me then I always took my little shoulder bag... So to those who don't want to use a lanyard, don't think it will be a problem to you if you don't take one. Some use them some don't, just go with what you want to do. cosytoes Posted June 20, 2016 #278 Share Posted June 20, 2016 I wear a lanyard so I don't need to carry a hand bag round the ship and make my husband carry my lipstick in his pocket.
Bird59 Posted June 21, 2016 #279 Share Posted June 21, 2016 Yes and no. I bought a small black lanyard from Academy made for a coaches whistle. On ship, especially on sea days when my attire is shorts, a tee shirt and flip flops, the lanyard works great, just tuck it in my shirt. At dinner with slacks or jeans sometimes a lanyard tucked in the shirt, sometimes the pocket. Off the ship I ususlly have shorts with button type pockets, so ship card, (ususlly mine and wifes ) cash and other goodies in the pocket. Don't worry about looking like a tourist. In a foreign country, locals will know your a tourist. Just don't look like an easy mark tourist.
mulewagon Posted June 21, 2016 #280 Share Posted June 21, 2016 I picked up a couple of free lanyards at the casino for my mother and me to wear around the ship. They looked fine, we just took them off for the portraits. ;) For going on shore we got little wallets-on-a-string to wear under our shirts. (And only took as much cash as we'd need each time, leaving the rest in the safe.) Sure, it looks dorky to fish it out to pay for things, but it's enormously safer than a purse or pocket. I can't believe that people are carrying money in handbags or pockets in known tourist areas. Pickpockets must make out like, uh...bandits! Next cruise I'm going to buy a waterproof cellphone case on a lanyard and carry everything in that. Because on our first cruise I carried my cellphone in my pocket. Took lots of great pics. And lost a lot of pics, too, when I didn't shove the phone back in the pocket securely enough and it fell out on a New Orleans street. So! I guess some of you will just have to turn your heads when you see me coming. :p
Rare MicCanberra Posted June 21, 2016 #281 Share Posted June 21, 2016 I use a lanyard during the day when on the ship but not in the evenings or when going ashore.:D
froggy9143 Posted June 22, 2016 #282 Share Posted June 22, 2016 I use a lanyard while on the ship, I do not have pockets on all my pants or a pocket on my swim suit, and I hate carrying things in my hands (no cell phone or camera either). When I get off the ship I usually have a bag or purse with me and put it in there as soon as I get off the ship. On board I need my hands free for my cocktails.:D:D
Tinas Coma woman Posted June 22, 2016 #283 Share Posted June 22, 2016 I have a small vera bradley crossbody purse the holds my small tablet with my books on, my trusty sun glasses (almost always need them) and my seacard.
luvbluseas Posted June 22, 2016 #284 Share Posted June 22, 2016 Lanyards remind me of work. I had to wear one for years and never could wear my necklaces because they kept getting tangled with the darn thing. On my last two cruises you had to put the key card in a slot for the power to stay on so you couldn't just leave it in a holder on the lanyard anyway. What cruise line/ship do you have to keep your key card in a slot for your power to stay on???
luvbluseas Posted June 22, 2016 #285 Share Posted June 22, 2016 Hi there. One tip that I've often seen suggested is to get a lanyard to hold the ship sea pass. I sort of like the idea...in particular I have seen a waterproof one that would hold the pass, some cash and an ID. This sounds like a great idea for beach excursions. Oh, and I'll admit that I've seen those sparkly rhinestone lanyards on Amazon.com. Tempting if only because they just look fun. Thoughts? We have nice lanyards from a Cruise Agent, our sea pass cards go into a plastic case and the bottom clips off so that in the evenings, or when we go ashore I can easily unclip it and carry it in my bag. Wearing the lanyard is nice on the ship, I like the 'hands free' part of it. I do have one evening bag that is very small so I just put the card, without the case, in that bag. Also, with our cards in the lanyards we hang them on something in the room and they never get "misplaced". But what "works" for us, may not work for everyone. Try a few things and see what works best for you. Just be sure to enjoy every moment!
MisterBill99 Posted June 22, 2016 #286 Share Posted June 22, 2016 What cruise line/ship do you have to keep your key card in a slot for your power to stay on??? Well, Anthem of the Seas requires a card of some sort in a slot near the door to keep the room power on, although there's no reason why it could not be attached to the lanyard and any other card (like an old sea pass) works fine. As for keeping yourself powered on, no card is required.
Cruising Grandma of Four Posted June 22, 2016 #287 Share Posted June 22, 2016 On the Quantum we used wrist bands so no sea pass card! They were free but I heard on the ANTHEM you have to pay for them. I think we can reuse the bands on our next cruise in October. They look like a small watch. fambeau Posted June 23, 2016 #288 Share Posted June 23, 2016 here here! I was thinking the same thing Stephen. I was also thinking, I don't remember every seeing a pocket in my bikini. . . how awkward. ;)
Beaniecrazed2 Posted June 24, 2016 #289 Share Posted June 24, 2016 What cruise line/ship do you have to keep your key card in a slot for your power to stay on??? Ovation of the seas cabins had a power slot near the door like hotels. Any card will do so bring a spare shopping loyalty card. Ovation of the seas sea pass also couldn't be punched as it is a smart card so you really need a clear pocket for the lanyard. When we were on Oasis of the seas last year, those cards could be punched.
JimAOk1945 Posted June 25, 2016 #290 Share Posted June 25, 2016 (edited) It's interesting how a three year old thread can still provide useful information. No, I don't wear a lanyard. Everything I wear onboard has a pocket deep enough for my card. When I go ashore, I carry it in my wallet. WupperAV Posted June 26, 2016 #292 Share Posted June 26, 2016 Use one! Tuck it in my shirt so NO ONE makes me a target. I could care less how I look or how anyone looks at me.
JimAOk1945 Posted June 27, 2016 #293 Share Posted June 27, 2016 (edited) On our first cruise my wife and I made the mistake of wearing our lanyards when we went ashore for our first port call. We didn't go very far before we had vendors calling us and one followed us down the street a little. We politely but firmly said "No thanks" and removed our lanyards at the first opportunity. Lesson learned, never did that again. Edited June 27, 2016 by JimAOk1945

GiftieEtcetera Posted June 28, 2016 #295 Share Posted June 28, 2016 On ship, I wear one. I am quite jealous of all these guys with pockets - and hope women's clothing catches up soon - but for now it's hard to find shorts with a good pocket. And I'm sure not carrying a purse everywhere or following my husband around like a little chickadee. Off ship, I wear it under my clothes. If my backpack gets stolen, they will score an old beach towel, a cheap water bottle, and some sunscreen. Maybe a bit of cash. But I'll get back on ship, with my license and S&S card. JimAOk1945 Posted June 28, 2016 #296 Share Posted June 28, 2016 (edited) Yes, it's true that the vendors are aware of tourists and can be very aggressive at times. Now that we are seasoned with several cruises behind us, we don't let it bother us as it did on that first cruise when we wore our lanyards when we went ashore. GINNY L Posted June 29, 2016 #297 Share Posted June 29, 2016 My husband and I use them during the day. We love them. We got the ones with the little pouch/holder so we can put money in them. For the casinos or when we randomly tip people. A buck here and buck there brightens the workers day just a little. mine I have different blings "diamonds" on them. Some are black "diamonds" some are white or color. My husband wears his inside his shirt. I wear mine out except for at night when I am dressed up and I put it in my clutch. When we go on shore we have a wallet/pouch that goes around the neck to put inside the shirts. This is great to carry money, passports, cards etc. and it is hard to be pick pocket or robbed because it is not obvious.

janddgillis@eastlink.ca Posted July 20, 2016 #299 Share Posted July 20, 2016 Just so you know, everybody knows your a tourist fresh off a ship. they know the locals, and everybody else is fair game. Doesn't matter if your a land vacationer or a ship brought you, your still a tourist, don't worry about hiding it. (this applies to Caribbean cruises and may not apply to others) HMMmmm as does the AI bracelets!!! :)
Gunzwife Posted July 21, 2016 #300 Share Posted July 21, 2016 Dorky... Ok, yeah. But I'm woman enough to own it. I wear a lanyard. There. I said it. I "misplace" everything. It's more of a need for me. It is what it is. Call me a dork if you want... But I'm not going to misplace that card or have it fall out of my pocket!!
