Terrible behaviour on a recent RCI 2 niter

Recommended Posts

I know on the current cruise which is 11 nights I think there are 1100 Canadians in a group on an incentive cruise. They may have cruised down from Honolulu, gone ashore in SYD for a couple of nights then reboarded to do this cruise.

My home phone rang this afternoon and to my surprise it was our friends from on board Radiance as they were cruising past the Gold Coast. They could pick up a local coverage on their Mobile from the ship. They were on their balcony and could see the buildings clearly as they were only 10 miles off shore.

I was so envious.... :)

Well they must be doing something right and providing a much needed service. If you read their corporate page you will see that thanks to these "cashed up bogans" they doubled the dividend to shareholders this year.Pretty good going in the Global Financial Crisis.:D

Good point David. Also a study that was performed in 2010 (I think) showed cashed up bogans consumed LESS alcohol over the year than the so called intellectuals.

But I am neither a bogan or an intellectual and sometimes I go to the dining room with my thongs on because they are so damn comfortable.

Elaine.

We're doing a 5 nighter on the Radiance next month - leaving and returning to Sydney with stops in Newcastle and Brisbane. We just booked it for a lovely few days away, but after reading this I'm wondering if this would be the same... Anyone have any experience of the 5 nighters? RCI ran the same cruise on the Radiance in Feb this year...

You will be fine its a lovely ship its just these very short weekenders that attract poor behaviour.

As Sue says you will be fine...No need to worry.

Dont forget that a 2 nighter , is really only 1 day on the ship , and the party animals are just there to live it up.

We went on the Radiance 5 nighter in February. It was fine. A very mixed crowd age wise and everyone certainly loved the Centrum nights. Definitely a less reserved group than our previous Top End cruise. We had lovely table mates in the MDR and perhaps the dress standards there were a little less than before but really it didn't matter to us. Enjoy.

I'm hoping that embarking in Sydney and ending in Melbourne on a four nighter next month might deter the party animals. I'm all for people having fun but I detest the type of creature that thinks showing people their backside is something we all need to share.

Thanks Megsie, David and Sue - that makes me feel better. I guess 5 nights would be a little more like a conventional cruise than a 2 nighter.

We've been on Radiance and Rhapsody and had a wonderful time on both, but one was a 14 night cruise to NZ and the other 10 days to the Pacific Islands over New Year - distinctly different crowd and atmosphere on both, and although we do like to have fun, I dont think I'll be doing a New Year island cruise again.

I personally don't think travel agents should be given free perks like this for part of their job as it is too much incentive to party instead of learn the product they are hoping to sell.

On the one hand the "cashed up bogans" as some here have described are more inclined to spend big, drink hard, party hard and gamble their fortune away. On the other hand the more conservative and more formal cruiser is your average tight wad that will BYO alcohol, smuggle it onboard, come up with ingenious ways to cash in their onboard credit, evade tipping and organise large private excursions to undercut the ships tours.

The cruise line cant seem to win no matter what demographic they sell the cruise to.

I have been on several 2 nighters. One of them was on Radiance but I did not notice any problems with anyone.

I would really like to try a short sampler on P&O Australia, Carnival having already done Princess and Royal Caribbean.

I did this cruise for the previous 2 years but not this year.

I see nothing has changed LOL Did you all get mooned in the atrium by someone going up in the glass lifts butt naked during the atrium festivities? :p

I'd also like to point out a vast majority of the cruisers on these 2 nighters are actually travel agents checking it out................say no more!

I've done quite a few 3 nighters and never experienced anything like it on those.

Welcome back Debsta Notice you will be doing a three nighter on the Solstice in January..Do you have priority check in this time or will you be needing " help" to jump the queue again :D:D:D.

PS: no problem if you do ...just let me know:rolleyes:

Wonderfully said.

Usually the people who need to be obnoxious, loud and rowdy in a crowd are those that seek to hide the fact, that they are very much insecure within themselves. As such, I have nothing but pity for these individuals.

We too are on this November cruise from Sydney to Melbourne and are hoping for a quiet relaxing time on board the ship.

I'm that ship. Party party party :D I'm normally tucked up in bed sleep by 11 pm latest. On the four day (last four days of the World Cruise), it was the oldies that were up partying. Some didn't get to bed until early hours in the morning.

Crikey Karateman, you have described me almost to a T, a part conservative cruiser. Except I never go on private excursions, always do Ships Shorex. LOL. I do drop the odd tip, always spend my OBC on booze and like to BYO on board what I can.

Short cruises are always going to attract a more boozy crowd. They know they've only got a couple of days to do all of their partying so they are full on.

I remember speaking to staff on P&O 7 years ago and them telling me that the Melbourne Cup Cruise is one of the worst for ongoing boorish behaviour.

All of this is unfortunate but RCI bears some of the blame. Sure, they can't stop people making a fool of themselves but they can enforce dress standards in dining rooms and responsible service of alcohol. By ignoring these things is asking for trouble and signalling that as far as the cruise line is concerned, anything goes!!

I think it's too late by the time they get to the dining room. They are most likely drunk and in a troublesome mood by then so "best" to just let them eat some food.

But I agree, it is the need to ensure as much income as possible on these cruises that starts the rot. Although it doesn't happen on the QM2.

I think it is the "return to the same port" that causes the issues.

lol don't take it too seriously. But they are out there. A few years back I discovered a ring of passengers who had discovered a way of cashing in their onboard credit. The trick was they used to register their credit card at reception, go and buy casino chips with their cruise card, take the chips away and not use them and exchange the chips for cash at the end of the cruise.

Welcome back Debsta, we have missed you ! You have been AWOL from CC for a few months.

Awww thanks Les. I've been a busy girl setting up a new business, with a major lack of cruising this year , although I've done some land travel!

Thanks everyone for your replies to this thread I started two days ago.

I did quite a few 2 niters before but this one was by far the worst as far as dress codes, behaviours and actually "cruising". What I mean is the ship just stopped off Port Stephens for a day. When I go cruising I expect to be cruising. But I guess it's all about costs and costs of fuel.

As for the dress code - not sure who mentioned it here in one of the replies, that they are comfortable wearing thongs - well, I'm also comfortable wearing all sorts of things but that does not mean that a dress code should be ignored.

Just my thoughts.

Yes, we just stopped off Port Stephens for the day, but it also gave the crew and the Australian Maritime a chance to do Search and Rescue training which I personally thought was great. What better opportunity to do it? Plus, the crew had a ball playing with the dolphins that surrounded them. If I am on the ship, I am happy, don't really care where it goes or what it does.

Agree about the dress code, but on this type of cruise, I doubt they were going to be able to enforce it.

I think the dress code should be enforced no matter how long the cruise goes for. To be honest here if you were to go to a similar land based establishment you would not be allowed in if you were not dressed to a certain standard. I suspect the dress code slides because these cashed up people who go probably do not go out and hit the town at all in their lives and just do what they do at home in their own backyards and friends places.

Maybe on these 2 or 3 nighters, just close the Main Dining Rooms and let the mob eat in the buffet or at the grill on deck, then they can wear Bintang singlets, stubbies and thongs 24/7. Hide all the glasses and make them drink out of cans, like at home. Way to go.
