bitsey66 Posted October 31, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 31, 2013 I believe I read that there is a limit for how much alcohol we are allowed to bring back home?? I know that they keep your purchases until the last morning, but is there really a limit of what I can bring home? I was hoping to bring back a gift box with 4 bottles in it from the distillery on Curacao and about 3 bottles of rum for gifts. I don't remember where I read this (either Princess site or CC site or...) or if I was reading something wrong? I keep looking but I can't find the information again. We will be on the Crown 11/16/13 Can anyone clarify? Thanks in advance!

Cauzneffct Posted October 31, 2013 #4 Share Posted October 31, 2013 Either! We are driving home though I'm unaware of any limit imposed by Princess on duty free alcohol purchased on board, but someone else may have more info. If you're buying alcohol in port, I'm unaware of any limit to the amount that princess would stow until the last day (if they do that, rather than waving you through and allowing you to keep it). U.S. Customs allows 1 liter of alcohol duty free; anything above that you're supposed to declare and pay duty on it. I've never had to pay any duty for declared alcohol, but its something they can enforce if they want.
Gunner22aa Posted October 31, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 31, 2013 A little more liberal than the US. Here its 40 imperial ounces. A liter is roughly 33. The only time I declared excess alcohol the CBSA officer looked me straight in the face and told me "you're way too honest" and sent us on our way. That being said it's always far better to declare something and pay the duty as opposed to getting caught, risk confescation pay a fine and possibly face a criminal charge. skynight Posted October 31, 2013 #6 Share Posted October 31, 2013 The ship has no limit. Island vendors sell bottles in carry boxes. US Customs allows one liter per person for personal use without duty or tax. If your purchase is from the US Virgin Islands of US Virgin Island produced alcohol, ie Cruzan Rum, then I believe the duty free/tax free limit is 6 liters. However, the tax/duty on excess alcohol for personal use is generally very low. All the savings is in the Federal and State Tax.

Rare geoherb Posted October 31, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 31, 2013 I paid $12-$14 for carrying back more bottles than the 1 liter allowed several years ago. After one of the bottles broke in my luggage (and, unfortunately, it was coconut rum), I decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Now we'll buy one or two bottles at most to bring back. jer_l Posted October 31, 2013 #9 Share Posted October 31, 2013 My last cruise I brought back 7 bottles of rum and two bottles of wine, declared it all, paid no duty.

One thing to keep in mind -- when the ship arrives at the disembarcation port, princess gives customs a list of pax who are over their customs limit -- dollar, liquor, etc -- based on on board purchases. As everyone is honest, I'm sure this won't impact anyone. For the others, do your buying in port to prevent being ratted out.
SeaBands Posted October 31, 2013 #11 Share Posted October 31, 2013 Customs really doesn't seem to care how much you bring back but be sure to list it on your declaration. Duty is very low if they do charge you.

So if you are a family of four that would be 4 liters or 24 litters if stopping and purchasing in St. Thomas.

(I have trouble remembering this on my first cruise in 2011 probably due to the 9 day buzz, lol! I don't plan on purchasing any alcohol on board to bring home. Only from the ports. If I have to pay a little bit, I don't care. I just don't want to buy all that and have it confiscated and thrown away.

Whether you fly or drive home is irrelevant as Customs will be after you get off the boat.

satxdiver Posted November 1, 2013 #17 Share Posted November 1, 2013 The limits are per person (21+) per month for reentry into the US. All cruise ships leaving from a US port must call on at least one foreign port per federal law so returning to the US port requires reentry through immigration and customs. Don't forget your paperwork (e.g. passports, DL, state issued BC, court orders changing your name, etc)
JonV Posted November 1, 2013 #18 Share Posted November 1, 2013 Depending on where your ship visited will determine how much you can bring off duty free. I always get more and declare it on my customs form. Sometimes I have paid 0.90 but most times nothing. Just be sure and upfront about it and declare it. I bought my wife an expensive ring on Royal last week and when we disembarked we were stopped by a Princess employee who escorted us to get our luggage and through customs. We were then brought to a waiting room where the customs official checked our declaration and paperwork. The Princess employee would not answer any questions while this was happening. The nice thing is that we jumped a waiting line of hundreds waiting to clear customs. SeaBands Posted November 1, 2013 #20 Share Posted November 1, 2013 they will report it to customs and as long as you put it on your declaration, you will have no problem. It happened to us several times so we list every item we buy as well as liquor and where we bought it. Remember, there's no limit on liquor bought in PR.
