Maya_C Posted June 1, 2017 #77 Share Posted June 1, 2017 A bookseller giving summer reading suggestions this week on PBS Newshour recommended Do Not Become Alarmed as an exciting page-turner. However, she said you probably don't want to read it if you're going on a cruise because it's frightening. It revolves around a shore excursion that goes seriously wrong. Maya This just came out. broadwaybaby123 Posted June 1, 2017 #78 Share Posted June 1, 2017 I actually just finished one, based on the TV series "MONK". It's called "Mr. Monk Gets Onboard". In case you don't know, the story centers around Adrian Monk, an obsessive compulsive detective. He lost his wife, Trudy, in a car bombing accident 10 years ago, and that is the only murder he has been unable to solve. At the time of the bombing, he was a cop, but since the accident, all of his OCD has returned and as a result, Adrian lost his badge. He has been re-hired by the same police department, but as a consultant. He has a psychologist and an assistant who help him cope with everyday life. The book series is told through the eyes of Natalie, Adrian's assistant. She gets her Private Eye license, and starts a business with Adrian. To promote it, she decides to go on a business cruise to Catalina Island. Much to her surprise, Adrian finds out and comes along. While they're onboard, a murder occurs and they get hired to solve the mystery!

jocap Posted September 20, 2018 #81 Share Posted September 20, 2018 Someone bought me "Sail Away" by the actress Celia Imrie last birthday... about an actress who has to take a job on a cruise liner. Quite humorous and fairly far-fetched, but I enjoyed it!
OctoberKat Posted September 20, 2018 #82 Share Posted September 20, 2018 Kate Christensen's new novel is set on a cruise from LA to Hawaii. It's a terrific read with much detail about cruising from both passenger and crew perspectives. Also, very funny. Great reading, recommended. I think the locale, which never is named in the book itself, is Panama.
broadwaybaby123 Posted September 20, 2018 #84 Share Posted September 20, 2018 I'm r3ading one now called "Starboard Secrets". It centers around a girl named Millie who just caught her ex-husband cheating on her with her best friend (hence the "ex"). He was a private eye. She decides she wants some adventure in her life, so she applies to be an Assistant Activity Director on a cruise ship....and gets it! But less than 10 min after she sets foot on the boat, a murder happens that she tries to solve. I'm looking for some fiction novels set on modern cruise ships...and I hate those cheap, trashy, Harlequin-type romances, so none of that, please. I don't even know if such a book exists, but if you have any ideas, please let me know! Also, while I'm at it, can anyone recommend any good novels about foreign travel in general? Fiction, preferably European locales, though anywhere is fine... I'm looking for stories about people traveling to or moving to foreign countries rather than books that simple use, say, London as a setting for an ordinary ole story. Thanks!
