Visiting the beach on a Caribbean cruise, what to do with valuables

I hope this is not a silly question

 

We are off on our first Caribbean cruise in a couple of weeks and been doing some research and it seems a lot of people recommend visiting what seems to be public beaches where you can rent loungers etc.

 

What do people do with valuables (phone, camera, money) when the go for a swim? Do these beaches generally have lockers?

Leave what you can in your cabin's safe. The rest should be in a waterproof container and with you in the water

The same advice would apply at almost any public beach in the US --- do not bring valuables with you- unless you are with someone who will watch them while you are in the water, or bring them in the water with you. HAL's private island, Half Moon Cay, has lockers, but I doubt any public beaches in the Caribbean will.

I bought a waterproof wallet for $10. you take it in the water with you when you go swimming. Go on ebags dot com. They have them. Well worth the money.

Or take turns swimming. Easiest if you have more than 2 people.

 

I wear a pair of shorts that have zipper pockets, and keep my S&S card, money, credit card, and driver's license in there. Safe for swimming and snorkeling.

We go to a lot of beaches throughout the year and have learned to take the least amount of valuables. Things like good cameras and expensive Smart Phones do not come to the beach with us. We have a waterproof (to over 100 feet down) fanny pack (with internal triple sealed bag) called a Splash Caddy. Our cash and credit cards stay safe in that bag and what we leave on the beach is not worth anyone's trouble.

If you don't have a waterproof camera buy a throw-a-way underwater camera. They come with a rubber band for your wrist and they float so they don't sink. And they are not worth anything if you leave them on the beach. Why take a phone?

We don't take much cash ashore with us. Our sign 'n sail card, a bit of cash and a credit card are in our short's pocket which are in the bottom of our beach bag when we swim -who wants to swim alone? Sit near someone with your ship's towel and you can ask them to keep an eye on your stuff and do same for them.

We have been cruising since 1985, always go to beaches and they only time we felt our stuff had to be watches was in Jamaica- saw a man climb over n 8' fence with barbed wire on top!

When we're at a beach, we can see our stuff from the water....so we keep an eye on the little bit we bring. No one wants your shorts/flip flops! If you have a velcroed pocket on your swim trunks, your credit card/ship key/cash, etc...can go in there...water won't hurt them.

Don't bring anything of "value", and you won't have to worry!

As much as some people just have to take that perfect picture valuables are either best left aboard or guarded continously when you visit a public beach or any other public area for that matter. Our rule of thumb is that if we aren't prepared to watch it or loose it then it stays on the ship.
