uglybutgoodbakery Posted December 8, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 8, 2013 We are on the Summit sailing this week and next. Previously we've sailed on Princess (on the CB 5 times.). Was really Expecting the food to be better... Food in dining room last night Was awful! The Shrimp Louis had about 6 canned tiny shrimp, and a whole lotta mayo. My broiled salmon was fair, at best, and it came with enough mashed potatoes for a toddler, and two halves of asparagus spears. The roasted beet appetizer just stunk. I was starved when we left and I weigh 130 pounds...my husband's meal was no better. Caesar salad was terrible, watery with tiny croutons. Our cabin is very nice, an outside cabin, bathroom is more spacious in the shower, which is nice. The ship is very nicely maintained and I like that it's a smaller, more intimate feel, not a Mega ship. Tonite is formal night, hoping for the best! Maybe it was an off night because it was embarkation day.

sun bum Posted December 8, 2013 #4 Share Posted December 8, 2013 Just back yesterday from our week on Summit. This was our 6th cruise with Celebrity. We did one sailing with Princess in the past, and returned to Celebrity for our last 4 cruises. Sorry about your experience with the food on your cruise. We ate in Blu each night and never had a bad meal. This was our first time in Aqua class and we really enjoyed it. If you are not happy with your meal, always let them know, they will fix you anything you want. I only ate half my steak one night b/c I was too full to finish it . Our waiter wanted to know want else he could bring and said he would have the chef make whatever I wanted.
antsnanny Posted December 8, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 8, 2013 Lots of complaining about the food and the service in the MDR on the Summit lately..... Your not alone..I am anxious to see if it gets better for you as we are booked on a 14 day in Sept. 2014.

uglybutgoodbakery Posted December 8, 2013 Author #7 Share Posted December 8, 2013 (edited) Just had some tea sandwiches and appetizers from the buffet, And they were just ok. Kind of disappointed, it's VERY apparent To us that they are cost-cutting on the food. We did NOT pay for a balcony, been there/done that and didn't use it on either cruises when we had one. Blu is not an option for our cabin, and I don't feel as tho we should have to be shorted after paying what we did for a back to back AND the second week for an addtnl outside cabin for our sons. And 4.50 for an Americano coffee is ridiculous, as is $13 for a martini. We did not buy an expensive "beverage package". There's a reason they sell 'em -- they make money on them...we don't Drink enough to warrant paying for one. When comparing to Princess, we Are not impressed at all so far. Rare Lady Arwen Posted December 8, 2013 #8 Share Posted December 8, 2013 We just returned from the Summit yesterday. We found the service, especially in the MDR, to be stellar! We had the classic drink package and our sommelier was only too happy to suggest wines and to keep our glasses full. Our wait staff was extremely good, as well. However, we did notice a decline in the food since our last cruise on Summit in May. Some meals were quite good, but others were dreadful. We tried to fill up on the breadbasket, but even that was just boring dry bread. We don't eat red meat, so we were limited to whatever fish was available. Some of it was fine, some was inedible because it was so dry. We both agree that the desserts were the worst we've ever had, especially at the buffet. We tried dessert twice, then never bothered. The buffet is in serious need of improvement. The same thing every single day becomes old very fast. We gave up with anything other than salad and fresh fruit. We did eat at Bistro on 5 and it was quite nice. We refuse to pay $45.00 per person for specialty restaurants. We still enjoyed our cruise and tried to think positively about the food.......no weight gain this time! We're on the Solstice to Alaska in May and we're hoping the food will be a step up. I doubt if we'll sail on Summit again anytime in the near future.
SAC69 Posted December 8, 2013 #9 Share Posted December 8, 2013 Hope it gets better. The food reviews on Summit are concerning but always very subjective so I go in with a good attitude. Looking forward to the Summit in March. :D

JMG Posted December 11, 2013 #14 Share Posted December 11, 2013 Happy to hear that your dining experience improved. We were on the Summit in October and did not have any complaints about the food and overall we felt the cruise experience was far better than Princess. judatt Posted December 11, 2013 #16 Share Posted December 11, 2013 We just got off the Summit the day you got on. It was our third trip on the Summit and we have enjoyed them all. I enjoy a good meal as much as the next person and think the Summit does a great job. Is it comparable to the restaurant we go to when celebrating a special occasion? - in a word, no. But it is very good and very much on par with the normal restaurants we go to. It amazes me how they can serve a thousand people at one time with a variety of foods and do such a remarkable job of it. Our food was good and our service was just as good. We were in a suite last time we were on Summit and could have eaten in Blu but always default to the MDR. Just really enjoy the food, the service, and the company of our table mates. Have a great cruise.
picaflores Posted December 11, 2013 #17 Share Posted December 11, 2013 Just a thought but, last Sunday (the 8th) the weather in St Croix was terrible, very strong winds all day, and tons of rain... may have something to do with not so happy experiences... uglybutgoodbakery Posted December 14, 2013 Author #18 Share Posted December 14, 2013 Today is the first day of Round 2 of our B2B. Our sons flew down and are joining us on this half. We were so excited to see them!! The food consistently was good in both the buffet and dining room. We didn't try the Normandie, too stuffy..10 years ago I would love the pomp and circumstance, but anymore, we're Just looking for easy, breezy and comfortable places to dine. The MDR is very attractive and elegant. The coffee bar was nice at night for an after-dinner Espresso and to listen to some nice tunes. This round, I'm not paying $110 dollars for the Beverage pckg w/coffee. Instead, I got Starbuck's VIA Espresso roast packets, 12/$9, and will make my own coffee...just had one and it's actually better than the Americanos I was getting At Bacio. uglybutgoodbakery Posted December 14, 2013 Author #19 Share Posted December 14, 2013 I do have to say that unless you are lucky enough to be able to afford the exorbitant cost of a drink Package -- or better yet, got it for free (which we did not)-- the cost of drinks is ridiculously expensive. A round of 2 martini's is almost $30. That's higher than in NYC! Ridiculous!!
cibumcupio Posted December 15, 2013 #20 Share Posted December 15, 2013 I also find the MDR food to be strange sometimes. Some items are pretty terrible, and others are really really good. The comment you made at first about the bad food the first night, I tried those same dishes and they were all... not to my taste. Especially that shrimp. But the pork chops the first night is wonderful. If you haven't tried them yet, I eventually found the escargot and the creme brulee to be some of the best things on the menu. All of the lamb and duck dishes are done very well as well. As for the drink prices, I actually feel they're pretty reasonable, maybe cheaper than what we have around us. A martini is around $10-15, and depending on the quality of the liquor can be up to $20. And coffee is around $4. I guess it's all what you're used to. Have a great second leg and I hope you enjoy many wonderful meals with your sons.

Ron_L Posted December 16, 2013 #24 Share Posted December 16, 2013 Does anyone have the drink pricing menus? Are all the martinis included in the premium alcohol package? I don't have the prices for all drinks, but I'm pretty sure that the only item at the Martini Bar that was above $12 was the martini flight. I think it was $16. Otherwise we tried just about everything on the menu and had no problem with the premium package.
