Er, taking something that doesn't belong to you (the mats), without the owner's (HAL) knowledge or consent, and keeping them in your (the teens) possession (the cabin), IS the very definition of stealing. :rolleyes:

 

If my teens had done that I would have been horrified! Taking something that doesn't belong to you is stealing. You say they were in their cabins so they didn't steal them. Where else would they be? They may very well have been planning on taking them home with them to use at home or at school. It is like the "roaming Gnome" However the Gnome usually makes it back home after he has traveled.

Saying the mats were in the cabins so they didn't steal them reminds me of a few years ago when I was still teaching college. A student went into the bookstore - found a book that matched up with a sales slip he had dug out of the trash - took the book and the slip to a cashier for a refund. His whole performance was observed .... but he said he was not stealing as he had not taken the book from the book store. He lost his argument.

So true. Teens pulling pranks? Hasn't that been going on for DECADES? I just watched a delightful little movie... perhaps it is familiar to many, It's a Wonderful Life? A wonderful prank in the beginning involving a dance floor and a swimming pool. Certainly the old cranks had a good hmmf! over it. My father has related some wonderful stories regarding fraternity pranks involving the taking of a mascot or two... I may or may not have a few stories of my own from my teen and college years. The mats weren't stolen, as you say they were left behind in a cabin.

Carnival Corp has had a lot of problems, the Costa problem and the Carnival problems. They are in to getting all the money out of a ship that they can. This means cutting costs and cutting maintenance. HAL has a big problem as the ships are old and small so they carry a small number of pas and due to the condition of the ships they can not charge a high price. I would only expect HAL to get worse.

 

I really find it hard to believe they could much worse. We were on the Westerdam in November doing the eastern Carribean and to put it bluntly, it was the pits. Someone posted the lower price of the cabins at this time dictated the reduced service. After this cruise, you really don't want to cruise HAL at any fare. Embarkation and dis-embarkation were both smooth and eveything in between was lousey.Food in Lido was on same order as school lunch, served same way, tasted about the same. A/C in cabin not working and no one could fix it. Had to call for ice three times as ice bucket wasn't filled. Food in MDR was adequate, service was slow. Entertainment was on level with high school productions, some schools are probably better. I don't really feel my wife and I are that hard to please, I am amazed that other cruisers that were on this particular cruise could give it such glowing reviews. I will be back on Princess from now on.

:D While it has been a few years since I sailed on Princess what you wrote was almost identical to what I wrote about my Crown Princess cruise the only exception was I did not have problems with the a/c but did have a few problems with the toilet not flushing ....Guess that is why I never returned to Princess :rolleyes:

Our last Princess cruise was the same as what you stated about the Westerdam. I felt like I was at a Walmart on the seas. Except Walmart has far superior customer service than what we received.

I've sailed on HAL since early 80's (was 28 my first HAL cruise) and have seen so many changes. I remember when they flew in South African Lobster Tails for each cruise. White gloved stewards escorting every passenger to their cabin at embarkation. I also remember that in 1982 we paid about $1600 per person for a 14 night Mexico cruise in an inside cabin.

Now I see 7 night cruises for $369 per person.

Still sailing and still love the people of HAL and their dam ships! When prices drop something has to give.

I agree up to a point. We all have things that we will accept (all be it, reluctantly in some cases) but we also all have our limits. To pay for a cruise where we cannot sleep well at night, due to poor ventilation or lack of A/C, is a deal breaker for us. Now others may be able to sleep regardless, or do well without sleep, but for us, sleep is very important. We will try continuing to cruise with HAL (we have 2 cruises booked), but if we continue to experience this problem on such a regular basis, we will have to spend our cruise dollars elsewhere. The reason we complain is that we are so frustrated, because we like HAL so much, for many different reasons.

Then you would be one of those parents whose child "borrowed" a neighbor's care for some joyriding, but since the undisciplined little darlings did not damage it, it is "no harm, no foul?" As an owner of a mountain rental cabin, I have lost patience with such parents. And, by the way, the fact that the kids did not destroy the mats does not make it any less a crime. So perhaps you should reconsider your "no foul" theory.

Wishing you the best on your medical issue, I'm sure many of us here will have your recovery in our prayers. :)

The doctors will do their part technically, but I will tell you from experience that keeping your moral up goes an awfully long way in recovery; November made 15 years and counting from head/neck issues.
