Are the Celebrity room safes big enough for an iPad?

We have cruised extensively with ipads, netbooks, expensive nikon SLR cameras, kindles, etc and we have never worried about theft from our cabin. My Ipad, when not in use, sits on the desktop charging, in plain sight.

 

I stopped worrying about having computers stolen years ago. More than likely, your ipad is insured under your homeowner's policy (perhaps subject to a deductible) but you can add it as a listed item for full coverage with no deductible for very little cost. As a practice, I don't store passwords or sensitive information on any computer I use outside our home unless it is securely protected/encrypted.

 

We use the safe for jewelry, cash, credit cards, wallets, passports, casino chips, etc. I haven't seen any statistics on property theft on cruise ships, but I'd guess that the theft that does occur is from ipads/kindles left out in public places and taken by other passengers.

We never worried about our laptop, but when we switched to iPads -- they go in the safe. Cabins are often less than totally secure while the crew is cleaning. An iPad sitting on the desk, could be attractive to someone walking by.

 

I can afford to replace them if stolen (come'on iPAd Air ;)) - but I wouldn't want to face the long trip home without them. :)

They fit, but on some of the S-class ships, the safe is located on top of the mini-fridge, which generates so much heat inside the safe that we did not put any electronics in it. It's a really bad location for the safe. (Like many posters above, there are things we don't put in the safe anyway. But we don't leave things just sitting out; as noted above, the cabin door is open when the room stewards are cleaning.)

I would worry that the electronics of the safe would compromise my iPad.

I remember when on Century, I was constantly having to go to Guest Relations to have my key card re- programmed, as I kept it in the same place as my mobile phone. In the end, guest relations told be to keep the key card elsewhere.

The magnetic strip on Cruise Ship/Hotel type key cards is very susceptible to being erased by close proximity to cell phones and other electronics. This is because it has an exposed magnetic strip that is designed to be easily, and frequently, programmed.

 

I've never heard about any similar risk with electronics such as phones themselves, iPads, or cameras. All of these are routinely used in close proximity to other electronics and are really designed for this.

This is true. My camera has a magnetic clasp. When I go to dinner I put my cruise card in my pocket and I carry my camera in my hand on the same side. Just brushing up against my pocket erased the card on several occasions. This year I made a point to put the card in the opposite pocket and was fine.

Safes are large. We store lots of items. Ipads, cameras, smartphones, passports, cash,etc. I do not bring much jewelry. I travel light. Leave valuable stuff home. I did notice that safes over the fridge were warm. Not hot. You could pull the fridge plug. I do not open it. Ask the cabin steward to do it.

The key card can be damaged by an iPad (with or without the magnetic cover but the cover probably makes it worse) or a mobile phone.

 

But my comment was not addressing possible damage to the key card, it was addressing upwarduk's concern that the electronics of the safe might damage their iPad.

 

Perhaps my post was poorly worded. Short version: I do not think the electronics of the safe could damage an iPad.

Safes on M class are smaller than S, although I do believe you could still keep an iPad in the M class safe. Hint: use a large ziplock bag to store your smaller valuables in the safe.
