missouri mike Posted December 23, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 23, 2013 Has anybody else noticed this? They look great, but, are tasteless. Am I grabbing the wrong desserts from the buffet? Is this just a European (or somewhere else) thing? Maybe I eat way too many Milky Ways...lol.
vacruizer Posted December 23, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 23, 2013 I've always thought the same thing. I don't even bother with them anymore. I either get ice cream, or just have dessert in the main dining room at night.
golfadj Posted December 23, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 23, 2013 Most not as good as they look. One exception is the key lime pie they have for lunch. Best dessert they make.
John Reid Posted December 23, 2013 #4 Share Posted December 23, 2013 I find this true for all the cruises I have taken on Carnival, RCI, Princess, and HAL. The desserts on display look great but are fairly tasteless. Agree with previous poster, MDR or ice cream.
jimw Posted December 23, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 23, 2013 Been tasteless since the '80s at least---never had the key lime pie, I will look for it! Thanks!
TeresaJ Posted December 23, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 23, 2013 I agree too. I like MDR desserts but not in the buffet. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Forums mobile app
seannyice81 Posted December 23, 2013 #7 Share Posted December 23, 2013 The cheesecake just isn't cheesecake... Even the office-building-sized one they serve in the steakhouses. The key lime pie was good. Most of the time the cakes are good, but some have an odd texture.

Tried the key lime pie on last cruise....Will be looking for it on further cruises.
sharecruises Posted December 23, 2013 #9 Share Posted December 23, 2013 Key lime is pretty good, and the dulce de leche cheesecake is good IMHO the various "cakes" and "tortes" are most often dry and tasteless the "mousse" desserts are like whipped jello ? I actually found most of the buffet to be pretty bad, I preferred fish and chips, Iguana or the sinful greasy but good Guy's burgers Desserts in dining room were delicious every night - yum
zoncom Posted December 24, 2013 #10 Share Posted December 24, 2013 (edited) True on Celebrity also. But they have free excellent homemade ice cream/sorbet all day and evenings.Love to see more pies on cruise ships. Vanessa L Posted December 24, 2013 #11 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Agree 100%! I have no idea how they can make something look so good and be so tasteless! It baffles the mind!
SadieN Posted December 24, 2013 #12 Share Posted December 24, 2013 99% of the desserts do taste lousy. Usually the apple cake, served at embarkation is very good. Ecpecially when it is still frozen, lol. Except for fruit I've almost given up on desserts. Though the chocolate cake from room service is extremely good. meatball_nyc Posted December 24, 2013 #14 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Agreed. Had the cheesecake on the Miracle a few years ago and it was not very good. ~robin and brian (summertime jersey shore beach bums) Every Day at Sea is a Great Day Norwegian Breakaway 2014 Carnival Miracle 2010 Carnival Legend 2006

You would think something like Mango Moose Cake will burst with flavor, but it's a bland as it can be. Jello No-Bake Cheesecake is better than what passes for cheesecake on a cruise ship. This is right on and throw in X ,one of the best things about Disney cruise line was the desserts but the rest of the food was so-so.

They brought out my "cheesecake" and I laughed. I thought it was a joke. I don't know if they just don't care or don't understand a real cheesecake. Colorado Kat Posted December 24, 2013 #18 Share Posted December 24, 2013 I do treat myself to dessert nightly. But if I get something that doesn't taste good, I try to stop eating immediately. I will have to look for the Key Lime pie. I love lime!
KPfromCT Posted December 24, 2013 #19 Share Posted December 24, 2013 I agree about their chocolate chip cookies!! They are the BOMB!!!! Overall, I am not really a desert person, but I always save room in the MDR for the WCMC!!!!! That stuff is INSANELY good!!!!!!:D:D

Yuridog Posted December 24, 2013 #21 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Just off the freedom on sunday. Chocolate buffet was extremely disappointing. michigancruiser0715 Posted December 24, 2013 #22 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Lest we not forget the chocolate cake pops. SO good! Extremely moist and flavorful. Every other dessert (cakes/tortes) I tried while passing through the buffets were, as said, completely tasteless. They all seem to have this odd, dry texture. And the cheesecake? Ha. Those chocolate chip cookies, however, mmmmm; they're dangerous! :)
golfadj Posted December 24, 2013 #23 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Choc chip cookies are very good. Dont know how they can make such pathetic cheesecake. Need to find a recipe for a real NY cheesecake.
John Reid Posted December 24, 2013 #24 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Forgot that during our two times on the Pride twice each cruise we shared a piece of the excellent chocolate layer or carrot cake they had at the coffee bar. Best $2.75 pieces of cake we ever had.
