Stop offs at Livorno and Civitavecchia

As as part of a cruise we are doing we are stopping off at Livorno and Civitavecchia, we have been to both of these destinations before but have done excursions to Florence and Rome. Is there some local attractions and transportation into both of these locations we can do, rather then go to where we have been before.

Yes. In Livorno most cruise lines or the port run shuttles to and from the center of town, because the port area is industrial. Relative to local attractions, we have spent time in this port wandering the small town several times... checking local churches, the local market, sometimes we have found a outdoor street market, we enjoy shopping for flowers, wine, pizza.

 

In Civitavecchia, the port run a shuttle around the port area to the front gate of the port. The town is a short walk from there. We have also wandered around this town and found it an enjoyable day. If you are looking for a relaxing day on a busy Mediterranean cruise, staying in these small ports is a good thing to do.

There are other options as well as just staying in the port town.

 

From Livorno, it's easy and not very far to take the train to Pisa.

 

From Civitavecchia you can take a local bus to Tarquinia to see some outstanding Etruscan tombs.

When we were in Livorno we took a tour to Pisa, as we had been to Florence. You see the leaning tower, the baptistry and the cathedral among other things

The next time we go to Civitavecchia, we've been advised to catch the Rome train for one stop only, and get off at the fishing port of Santa Marinella. We haven't researched it, but it sounds a good idea.

The last time we were in Civi, the ship ran a 1/2 day trip into Tuscany, with tea at a farm. It ranks as one of our better excursions.

From Livorno you can easily get to Lucca - an amazing medieval walled city - definitely worth the trip.

For Livorno, we purchased tickets in advance for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, choosing an entry time that would coincide w/our time in port, as well as accounting for time in transit (taxi, train & foot) to & from. Total time off the ship was less than 4 hours. I got all the required transportation info on the Italy Port of Call forum.
