In this day and age of electronics, radar, etc, why can't the ships leave if there is fog? I have left on 65' yachts from Nantucket which is known as the Grey Lady because it's always in fog. Just don't understand???
Whoa! Apples and oranges. It's a combination of fog and navigation. When you sail from Nantucket, you sail into the ocean. In Houston, you don't. You have to go through a very narrow channel. Here's a screenshot I just took of the CB and the area:

When the Coast Guard closes the Houston Ship Channel, no ship (oil tanker, rowboat, cruise ship or 65' yacht) can sail.

The Houston Ship Channel is pretty narrow. Both on our way out and on our way in, I was amazed how close we were to the passing ships. You could shout to people on the other ship and be understood, I think. Less than 100 feet separation.

I grew up in Seabrook on Galveston bay. Galveston sans the ship channel is shallow. We used to joke if our sailboat capsized we would not drown, we would die of a concussion. The Bayport channel is a branch off the Houston Ship channel even narrower. Because of national security interests the channel especially after you pass Bayport is highly regulated. A misshap on the channel could cause havoc to fuel and heating costs in the Northeast and California as the not in my backyard folks are preventing new refineries being built. Port of Galveston is on the backside (bayside) of the Island. Different rules for the port of Galveston than Ports of Texas City, Bayport, then Houston.

Good morning.

First I just want to say we had one of the best and smoothest travel day ever yesterday. Getting on the ship was a breeze here in Houston.

Just wanted to up date everyone. Last night an announcement was made at 6:30 pm ( we were to leave at 6:00 pm the rescheduled time) letting us know we would not be leaving due to fog. When we boarded around 3:30 pm yesterday it was clear out but shortly after we could see the fog rolling in. So having he fog roll in and knowing this has plagued Princess on and off this season.

So having said this I was not to surprised to see we are still socked in with fog (time now as I'm writing this is 8:0am) this morning. We have yet to hear another announcement to let us know if and when we are to leave today. Ill up date again later when I know. Oh also we do not know if we'll miss any ports but I'd say we'll miss at least one.

Had an amazing dinner in the steak house last night!

Have a good weekend and enjoy the Superbowl.

Jeffry

Keep the reports coming as all will be following your voyage. By the way which steak did you have? I usually have the 14 oz Ribeye prepared Medium-Rare. Also just love the loaded baked potatoes.

Remember, just sit back and relax, after all isn't that what cruising is all about!

We finally set sail at 12:30, very happy to be on the way. We've also had a change of itinerary.

Tomorrow - sea day

Tuesday - cost maya

Wednesday - Belize

Thursday - Cozumel

Friday - sea day

Saturday - Houston

So not going to the only port we have never been to and booked the cruise for.

No winnings in bingo but was close a few times.

Love the window suites beat way to receive the suites perks. They're are five other suites sitting empty. More in that later.

Just off to the horse race which I haven't done in a long time on Princess.

Oh. Heard we had 20 cm of snow at home yesterday.

Current weather here rain.

Chat later.

Jeffry, am tuning in and interested in every little thing you have to say: we're booked in Window Suite F305 for a longer cruise in just under four months.

We bought our FCC and booked it onboard this same ship two months ago.

A WS was included in the Cabin Crawl so we had a peek at that floor plan. We do Suites mainly for the bathroom and perks.

I noticed a difference in # of power outlets from other cabin types. Have you run short of places to plug in?

Here's hoping you have a great cruise from here on out~

Faiz23, thanks for the great shots. Don't know if I'll ever get to cruise in such luxury. I wonder do you get a balcony in those suites? Just wanted to ask.

Jeffry enjoy the cruise. Looking forward to whatever additional adventures you can share.

Counting down the days to my own cruise!

Drove down to Galveston after the CB departed Bayport to get pictures as it went past Galveston. The rain almost made it a no go but I managed to get a some video which I captured the following photos from it. The lens have rain drops on it and there was an increasing rain as the ship passed by us at the end of Seawall BLVD. Not many people on deck for the sail-away but I can understand that considering the weather.

I hope that all onboard have a great cruise and no return of the Norovirus.

The suite looks wonderful. Also, thank you for the last post of the ship WWCJR, it is so beautiful and made my heart skip with excitement. Sorry Jeffry that you are missing Roatan, one of my favorite ports, love Maya Key. I really like the Costa Maya port area. I thought it was very nice.

have a great cruise!

We were in this cabin a few months ago on the CB and we loved it! We didn't miss the balcony, but so enjoyed the suite amenities. The cabin is very large and, because of the very large windows, was very bright. The bathroom is glorious! Huge! You will love this cabin!

I totally agree! We had one in 2011 and loved it. We have another one booked for our B2B2B in October. We love balconies, but this room and the suite perks can outweigh a balcony on many cruises. Enjoy the cabin and all that comes with it. :D

Checked with Princess

3 Feb - at sea

4 Feb - Costa Maya 8 - 5pm

5 Feb - Belize 7 - 5?

6 Feb - Cozumel 7 -5

7 Feb - At Sea

8 Feb - Dock in Houston 7 am

Just what I predicted in post number 2 of this thread. I hope they had more notice than we did for costa maya and were able to investigate the port and excursion options.

This explains the four armed Coast Guard men walking thru the ship as we went down the channel on our cruise. At first I thought they were Navy Seals, all dressed in black. Don't know if they get on every ship, but they were there on the "early return" Caribbean Princess last week.

Hi All

I've been having problems with the inter net and trying to cut and past from my phone. I need to save the rest of my minutes for staying in touch from home.

Been having an great time and I'm up $40.00 I'm the casino.

We did leave at 12:30 yesterday afternoon. So today is our first sea day and we'll reach Costa Maya tomorrow morning. Been a few times before so it's going to be a beach day for us. Belize were going to the ruins and Cozumel were are going to a cooking class.

Had a good meet and mingle with other People from CC yesterday.

Off to Sab for breakfast shortly .

Keeping notes so ill post a review when I get home.

Have a good week everyone.

Jeff

Jerry

Would it be possible for you to let me know where exactly on the Open decks Smoking is allowed on the Caribbean princess??

Thanking you in advance

I can help with that......recently off the Caribbean Princess.

You can smoke in many locations outside along Deck 7 Starboard, as well as next to the Tradewinds Bar on Deck 16 Portside Aft.

You can smoke indoors on Deck 6 at the Churchill's cigar lounge. It has good ventilation until it is stormy outside and the decks are closed.......then every smoker on the ship is in here after dinner...lol

Enjoy!
