Live from Eclipse - some thing spreading

Last year on the Infinity, we were told that the noro virus was brought onto the ship by passengers who touched "things." That's life. People touch things. We do not live in a bubble. Supposedly, the ship was deep cleaned as we waited to board the ship. We boarded very late and were told that everything was clean. We were also told that there was no virus on the ship. We were still not allowed to touch anything for a few days. Yet, there were still people getting sick. All it takes is one infected person to start it. If that person handles food or items that are widely distributed to passengers, the virus takes hold. Places on the ship where lots of people touch the same item are the worst. Be careful. Wash hands with soap and water often. My suggestion would be to avoid the buffet....or Celebrity should have servers with gloves put food on plates. Those serving utensils are nasty.

If this cough persists >2 wks, see your doctor. It could be pneumonia.

We left the Eclipse on January 11 with the cough. Many were coughing on the ship. It persisted and than bronchitis and I developed a sinusitis. Saw a specialist and specific antibiotic and nasal steroid spray finally helped clear it away. My husband recovered after a couple of weeks with mild medical intervention. We are just fine now but would not ignore a persistent cough.

Thanks

I have read on roll calls where people do B2B and change ships. I read one where they didn't report that they were sick because they would be quarantined and left the ship and went on a different one. It is futile to try and stop is as people do not want to "ruin" or cancel their vacations so they go aboard sick or don't report when they get sick on board. Just take precautions and realize that the hand sanitizer does replace proper hand washing techniques.

exerpt from the CDC website.

Noroviruses can be found in your vomit or stool even before you start feeling sick. The virus can stay in your stool for 2 weeks or more after you feel better. So, it is important to continue washing your hands often during this time.

At this point this is the reported 2014 reports from the CDC

http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/vsp/surv/gilist.htm#2014

I repeat, those ships that do not use US ports are NOT reported by the CDC. Including the NCL Jade that departed from Rome on January 8, 2014, where we had noro or some other kind of GI virus. Many guests and crew members were ill.

To their credit, NCL handled this very well. We were impressed with their speed and efficiency of cleaning the ship (twice) and alerting guests of the problem. And stopping self serve in the buffets.

I got 'The Cough' on Eclipse last year. Started about day 5. Had a terrible night of sweats and shivers then was left with an annoying cough which persisted for weeks afterwards. Ive read cruise cough is caused by the drying effect of cabin air con but why are there so many reports of it on Eclipse?

It stinks that an illness spreads and ruins a vacation. We can only hope that the Cruise line screens food prep staff for illness, and they hold up their end.

In the US we have wipes for our cart handles, and baskets at every entrance to a store. The Ships do the smae thing. Life is full of risk, and you CAN get this Virus ANY place from Schools, Nursing Homes, Doctors offices, Hotels, and anywhere else people go.

How many Cruise passengers of got a Hepatitis A vaccination before traveling to the Caribbean?? Hep A spreads in dirty water that can be used in food, and spread by Human handling.

Norovirus is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in the United States. Each year, it causes 19-21 million illnesses and contributes to 56,000-71,000 hospitalizations and 570-800 deaths. Norovirus is also the most common cause of foodborne-disease outbreaks in the United States.

The best way to help prevent norovirus is to practice proper hand washing and general cleanliness.

This cruise was without a doubt one of the best of the 40+ we have taken. Yes there were problems, inconveniens, but no disappointments.

The illness issue was addressed be celebrity early and took the proper cleaning and precautions to prevent any major outbreak. Of course the company line was that there were only a few cases with no crew sick. The abrupt change said differently as stated earlier on this board. There was a beautiful Buffett brunch SERVED by staff this past Thursday that caused long lines and very timely delays.

Still no hand towels in the bathrooms but paper. Pool butlers were finally wearing gloves to roll towels, and no bar snacks after the third day.

Would I go back on this ship - yes, without any hesitation as the staff is friendly, helpful and in good spirits. We ate most of our meals in Blu and it is like a resturant venue, from the ladies at the front to seat you to the attentive staff who knew youn name. Intimate seating of two soon became four or more and food was always of the highest quality.

To all those future cruisers on Eclipse - you will enjoy your cruise as 14 days is the perfect duration (unless your doing a b2b).

Just off Eclipse today and I am still sick. :( It went like this - there was Noro on the ship - we heard about 300 people and Celebrity did an excellent job and got it nipped in the bud quickly. I give them an A+.

I brought on the special Lysol that kills Noro and disinfected our cabin myself upon arrival and took EVERY opportunity to wash my hands and take the sanitizer. Day 8 of the cruise I started to have a tickle in my throat - the next morning woke up with a raging sore throat which hurt when I swallowed all the way up to my ears. I medicated for a sinus infection thinking the drainage was the cause of the sore throat, ran a slight fever. Sore throat cleared up but then came the COUGH. I would be fine, feel fine and then in seconds would be in a coughing fit so extreme that I could not stop or catch my breath. I had brought on a Z pack (anti biotic) that my Dr. had provided but I went to the ship's Dr. to make sure I should take it. She said yes and also prescribed a cough syrup and Prednisone. She said I was not contagious and my husband did not catch anything. The day I started the Prednisone I started having excruciating pain when coughing - like my chest had fire raging but only upon the coughing fits. I took the Prednisone 2 days and have refused to take the last one as I am not sure that it isn't the problem. So what did or do I have? I'll be seeing my Dr on Monday but PLEASE everyone take it as a warning. Noro is not the worst thing you can catch.

It is very scary - I've had bronchitis before and this is nothing like that, the pain is bad. I did meet a young gal that had pneumonia - she ended up being admitted to ship's hospital unit. I met a family of 3 and they all had the chest infection and witnessed many, many people being ill.

I took every precaution and still became ill. Some say that it is an irritation - almost an allergy to all the Noro chemicals that they spray the hallways with. I'll update if I get a diagnosis.

We still had a wonderful cruise - the staff on this ship - amazing!!!! I'll be posting a review.

We would take wipes and wipe down the hotel room, then do the same in the cabin on board the ship. It always seemed as if it didn't help as one of us would get a cold and etc. This last Nov on the Eclipse we didn't even bother as it seemed to fruitless. It could be a coincidence but we didn't catch anything.

Jane, who knows. About 8 weeks ago, I developed a significant case of bronchitis, which required antibiotics for ten days; and, I had virtually no contact with other humans prior to said attack. Of course, my daily exercise regimen was disrupted since bed rest, inter alia, was a part of the recovery.

It happended during Christmas time; and, my Christmas meal was a yogurt.

Does anyone know what time Eclipse actually sailed out today? A few on the boards said they got information about embarking later than usual - anyone know what time Eclipse was delayed in Fort Lauderdale? Thanks for any information from people on board now - and if all goes well as the next 14 days progress.

Hi Jane - if you look on the first page of this post, I had mentioned that I was on the sailing before yours (Jan.25)and even though no one had Noro, people had a bad cough, me included. No one talked about the cough though. Sometimes I just couldn't control the coughing fit. I flew home from the cruise on Feb.8th and have been in bed for the last 2 weeks, not feeling well, and with a low fever that came and went. Today I am finally out of bed, but i still have a bit of the cough. My cough was so bad that a rib (or muscle) was aching every time I coughed, oh, yes, and I had lost my voice, I think due to all the coughing and it strained my vocal chords.

I will be extremely interested to see what your Doctor has to say on Monday. Please keep us advised.

Jane we had the same symptoms last month. Here they called it h1n1. The swine flu. Interested to hear what your doctor calls it.

I have a neighbor who started off with the flu and ended up spending a

week in the hospital with double pneumonia; and, she was not on a cruise, and she had received her flu shot.
