Code red on Infinity

And on our last cruise a man and his wife skipped the sanitizer @ the Windjammer when the attendant had stepped away. He made a loud comment to us, his wife and others: "My employees would go crazy if I told them to wash their hands." Wonder what employee absenteeism is at his business?

:D

It was a little annoying when the young lady said, "washy, washy". She did a good job

I am also one of those that is unable to use the hand sanitizes (I break out in a rash every time I try); therefore, I diligently wash my hands thoroughly before entering any dining area.

Me too and I got absolutely fed up with the snide comments from other guests on Silhouette last week when I declined to use the gel offered. I have my own foam I use, however, in the lift back from embarking at one port, I was given a lecture from a fellow guest at how I was harming others by not using the ships products and that my own was useless and I would make people on the ship sick.

Please please can fellow guests stop these comments about I am disgusted he/she did not use the sanitisers. I appreciate many guests do not use for the wrong reason but many also not use for an excellent reason.

Our very first cruise is coming up in june and we have been a little bit worried about all of these ships having outbreaks lately.

If we plan to use the buffet, we had thought about bringing rubber gloves to handle the self serve utensils (throwing them away when we are done), but thought that might be overboard.

Would if be looked down upon by others if we used say a napkin to handle the self serve tongs, forks and spoons? Or is that being too paranoid and using utensils that lots of others have touched and we have no clue if they are sick or washed their hands after using the bathroom and such?

I had read on these boards one or two other couples didn't shake hands either on cruises, but we thought that sounded a bit much. Or has things changed these days and more people are spreading viruses than before?

Some people tend to be a bit overboard- almost geting hysteric about catching this and that. Washing hands often- washing hands after useing the bathroom should be common sense, since we learned that as kids, all right and good. One does everything to avoid getting infected, but IMO the worst is to be afraid of everything. I agree with forecten- rubber gloves would really be to much - as for shakeing hands- well even the captain avoids doing so sometimes.

It is a proven fact that all those spreading allergies and such are due to overdone , hysteric hygiene levels- so some people just can´t built their own self defence system.

An update from infinity. Code red still in effect. It is not likely that it will end anytime soon. The ship was deep sanitized in Cartagena. Oceanview was closed for 2.5 hours and various areas were closed on a rotational basis while sanitation was going on. Also some venues are partially closed at all times. If code red is still in effect on Sunday the next cruise may start under code red like it did when I boarded in Buenos Aires. For those of you boarding Sunday. If you get a letter about noro. And see tables around drink stations in Oceanview. Expect that to las approx 3 days

I came off the Infinity this morning and can report that the Norovirus was widespread. Even though I knew that it existed and thought I was diligent in washing my hands I still got it last Sunday. I was told I was Case No. 22 but that was with a week remaining in the cruise. I have no idea where I contracted it, but it could have been in the casino or even ashore in Chile where we ate lunch at a restaurant in the mountains outside Arica. It is really debilitating and resulted in a two day isolation in my cabin. The crew was handing out everything, even sugar packets and salt packets. They used tongs to hand out napkins. Yesterday I started seeing people in what appeared to be Hazmat uniforms with surgical masks all over the ship. I did notice them constantly cleaning and wiping down the ship, at least in most of the public areas and in the buffet. Future cruise sales even wiped the desks and chairs after every person. The daily newspapers were handed out by Guest Relations. One exception though. I didn't see much cleaning going on in Blu.

I honestly think the only answer is to shame offenders. Neither my brother or I got sick the entire 15 day transit, and all our day trips were ventures into the deepest jungles and swamps of Colombia/Panama/Costa Rica. I'd get back from canoeing in mangrove swamps without incident, and witness buffet passengers pick up food and place it back without tongs, wipe their hands on their pants instead of use napkins, and bypass the hand sanitizers like it would revoke their alcohol privileges.

As I said, neither of us got sick. Your biggest enemy on any cruise: your fellow uninformed passenger.

When i got off this morning,I saw the white hazmat suit being worn while I was waiting for customs to reopen so I could disembark. I also heard over the security radio that they had a crew from shoreside coming on to help with the deep clean. The one thing cruise lines should do is find a sanitizer that does not feel sticky . After using the sanitizers at the gangway, to and from helipad, buffet and shops. My hands were feeling really sticky. The only place where you could get salt and pepper and bread on the tables was the Trellis restruant. We weren't the only ship on the southamerica run to go in to code red. The golden Princess that was in Lima on the same day also had a outbreak of noro and are now in code red. CDC will post the numbers if more then 3% of passengers and crew combined got sick. The same cruise a year ago had 101 of 2086 (4.84%) among passengers and 17 of 927 c (2.05%) among crew

I understand everyone's diligence on this issue, but please don't attack people who don't use sanitizer. I wash my hands before I eat and specifically DON'T touch handrails because they are so grubby. The hand sanitizer leaves my hands raw and covered in a rash. I'm tired of being judged by people who think I'm dirty because I prefer not to have raw, rash covered skin and instead wash my hands with soap and water.

Thank you but see Post 52

I do not need the uninformed revoking any of my cruise "privileges"

I think I would be far more unhygienic with weeping sores on my hands by the way, if I followed the route you are proposing

I also debarked yesterday. I was almost happy to see the "precautions" in force after day one in the buffet where a woman reached into the cookie jar with her hands to select the right cookie and reports that another saw someone choose some cheese with fingers, taste one and return the rest to the platter when they didn't like it. Yuk. It wouldn't bother me if the buffet was served always even if not code red. Less food would be wasted as the servers don't heap it on the plates!

Just got off the ship yesterday and yes there was an outbreak. Our room steward brought some food down to people near our cabin. We saw them spraying different areas and the halls were all sprayed in the early evening on our floor. The library was stripped of all the books and was closed for quite a long time. I saw them shut one jewelry store down and they went in with the white suits and sprayed the whole shop. When they had a sale on and had jewelry out in the middle area of the stores, you had to sanitize your hands before picking any of the goods up to look at. The railings were always being wiped down and sometimes it felt like you were at fault as they would be following you downstairs wiping as they went lol. We caught a bad cold and cough and were worried about our systems being weak but thank goodness that was all we got. They were supposed to be doing a super clean after everyone was off yesterday. Good luck to the new cruisers!

I think on all our Oceania cruises buffet staff - wearing gloves - have always served the food. You ask for what you want, say how much, and they hand the filled plate to you. Doesn't seem to be a problem, but there are plenty of serving staff.

I've seen some women use the bathroom and just walk out without washing their hands. It's so disgusting, but I'm not sure how to handle those situations.

It just burns my biscuits!

Any suggestions on what to do and how to approach this?

I agree there is no justification for the lack of hand washing. However, I expect that most bugs and viruses are picked up in pools and tubs or off the sunbeds after others have used them post being in the pool. I am on long term immuno suppressants and I am under doctors instructions not to go into pools or tubs. Also to only eat the cooked in front of me food from buffets. Oh and to try and never use the public toilets - so its long treks back to to the cabin for me :o.

Still Code Red on the Infinity. Overall both service and amenities are lacking. It is clear they are trying to get ahead of it, but in the most disorganized way possible. Venues are not opening on time, particularly the Constellation Lounge, always at least an hour late. The machines in Cellar Masters are malfunctioning and no one cares. Modern Luxury=indifference. Definitely our last Celebrity cruise, regardless of our status. There has to be a better option.

Thanks for the info! Hope to see more posts on this thread or the March 30th thread......I'm sure the service will improve. The crew is probably exhausted due to all the clean up...

A little inconvenience is far better than getting sick on the cruise. When Celebrity needs to divert staff to wipe everything down with santizer delays happen. It's likely that the folks who might repair the cellar master machines might be doing sanitation chores.

Sorry, but it does sound a bit "unusual" to complain that you would prefer the wine bar machines to be fixed so you aren't inconvenienced rather than letting the crew focus on what some would consider more serious issues.....

Hope your cruise experience improves...but this type of inconvenience can happen on any cruise ship on any cruise line.

I quite agree with your comments.

That said, we sailed with NCL in January on a 21 day med cruise chosen at the last minute ENTIRELY based on an amazing price and itinerary.

There was an outbreak of noro or some other GI illness on the ship. (You'll see no CDC report because no US port was involved; hence, no reporting to anyone is required.)

We were amazed at the entire staff deep cleaning that ship - including the officers. They were open and honest about the issue, made zero attempt to cover it up and spent every minute cleaning. No crew members were allowed shore time for days until that ship was 'cured'.

The only 'inconvenience' we 'suffered' was that self service in the buffet was abandoned so we were served by the crew. Occasionally, we had to queue up for coffee.

The staff was resolutely pleasant and uncomplaining ( except one guest services person who had been sick and quarantined for several days.).

Frankly, the way the ship handled this was one of the things that impressed us MOST about NCL.

We also learned another thing: guests avoid reporting they are ill. NOBODY wants to be quarantined. We were among that crowd. We self quarantined for the short duration of our illness, telling the concerned room steward we were hung over. We were NOT the only passengers using that excuse!

I have a problem with self-diagnosis....

Yes you quarantined yourself but how did you really know your were over it completely....sometimes a self-diagnosis is not good. My husband and I both got it on a river cruise years ago, before it was broadcast so much, and we stayed in our cabin until the Doctor said it was okay to venture out. Maybe we got it by someone else self-diagnosing when they weren't really over it. A Doctor would know when it was okay to leave your cabin.
