We are aboard the ship now and were just informed that due to a collision in the channel, the port is closed and we will not be leaving today. We should have more info before 8 am tomorrow.

....of your delay. We just drove back from the port and were commenting on how it looked like the fog had lifted enough for you folks to get out. We hope there were no injuries or complications due to spills with this incident. We just heard a barge was involved and sank and is leaking oil out by the dyke. A delayed bon voyage to you!

U.S. Coast Guard

The Coast Guard along with state and local partners are responding to a collision near Texas City, in the Houston Ship Channel, Saturday.

At approximately 12:35 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston received a call from the captain of the 585-foot bulk carrier Summer Wind, reporting a collision between the Summer Wind and a barge, containing 924,000 gallons of fuel oil, towed by the motor vessel Miss Susan.

The motor vessel Miss Susan was transiting from Texas City to Bolivar at the time of the collision. Kirby Inland Marine, owner of the motor vessel Miss Susan and the barges, activated its emergency response plan immediately and is working in a unified response with the Coast Guard and the Texas General Land Office, which are on scene.

A sheen of oil has been reported on the water, but the quantity of product released is unknown at this time. The six crew members of the motor vessel Miss Susan are all accounted for and are in stable condition.

Marine traffic in the Houston Ship Channel from the Intracoastal Waterway to lighter buoy 32 has been temporarily suspended for the safety of the responders.

Texas City Emergency Management said the dike and all parks on the water are closed until further notice. No action is required at this time other than to stay away from the area until advised it is safe.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Wow...got off first thing this morning went to care for cattle at the ranch and home again and see the ship still stuck at the dock. Odd that Texas Responder is not out containing the spill from the barge. What a mess.

Hope y'all sail early enough not to miss too much.

Ktrk ch13 Houston showed video taken by some folks fishing in bay who watched the crash. Not best video but how often do you get to see such video anyhow...I know several cruise ship crashes caught on video...

me too, it sounds serious though if a barge sank. I hope its not as bad as thought.
If a barge sank, that's going to become a navigation problem in itself

(unless it sank in waters deeper than 60-70 ft.)

until such time as it is cleared away.

Anyway....once Caribbean Princess gets going again

you can walk to the stern on outside Promenade Deck 7

where you'll see and hear the wake! It roars!

Yes, there's some wind noise over the mic, but you will hear the roar too - like a waterfall!
