Which island would you choose?

If you are looking to rent a car and explore and enjoy dinners out and evenings at the casinos or night clubs then St. Maarten is the best choice in my opinion. If you are planning an AI then I think choosing the resort is as important as choosing the island.

We wouldn't ever choose an island which feels too commercialised so St Marten is out for us big time:(. We LOVED St Barths but at present our favourite is Tortola, BVI. When we were there in February there was a lot of building work planned but we're hoping it won't be too spoilt before we visit again in Feb 2016.

Our answer would be that it depends on whether we are going to an All Inclusive or going to simply rent a condo for 1 or 2 weeks. If it is an AI then there are many good options including St Lucia, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, etc. If we want to stay on an island we generally prefer Aruba or St Martin. The latter is particularly good for those who want excellent French/Caribbean cuisine since the town of Grand Case (French side) is wall to wall excellent restaurants. If money is no object St Barts would probably move to the top of our list.

This was also my line of thinking. Many islands that people have mentioned would be a great choice for an AI vacation like St. Lucia but I certainly would not be renting a villa and driving to and from dinner in St. Lucia. More info is needed to give a thoughtful answer on this one.

Just out of curiosity, based on all the islands you have visited while cruising and the experiences you have had on them, which island would you choose to spend a week on. DH and I have considered mostly st. Thomas, st. Martin. Not sure we would ever do it, but often consider it before we turn around and book another cruise.

Are you finding anyone's answers helpful here? It seems to me that you'd need to elaborate a little on what you are looking for, in terms of activities, culture, etc., before anyone could recommend an island...

Then again, I guess if most posters had actually told you, as you inferred you'd like to know, what experiences cause them to recommend particular islands, you might be getting some useful info. Few have given much detail...

I'm really going to follow this thread.

Can't decide whether to cruise in December or just go some place warm (and it better be warm after this winter!!!!!). We're not real beachy. I like to snorkel - but DH is all about towns to knock around in. Thought about a Curacao/Aruba combo. Perhaps Cartagena would have the right combo of activities, town and beach? Hadn't considered Tortola....I could spend hours just looking at the scenery. St. Thomas with St. Johns....another consideration.

After seeing most Caribbean islands, we started spending a week each January on our favorite: St. Maarten- the last two years we upped it to two weeks, and we'll visit again in 2015. We stay at Dawn Beach, just 10 minutes from Phillipsburg (which we avoid whenever there is more than one or two ships in). There is so much to do, the weather is ideal, and nearby islands are just short boat rides away.

Very tough question.

we really enjoyed Palma de Mallorca (Boreal Islands, Spain). The people, food, atmosphere, weather. Totally relaxing great time. But it's all the way across the pond.

On this side of the world, my favourite Island(s) would be Bermuda. It is a very expensive island for visitors who stay there in hotels, so I prefer to cruise there and spend the better part of three days in port, my ship is the hotel. What to love about Bermuda? Everything.

No hassling with vendors everywhere, No Walmarts, no MacDonalds, no Starbucks. Only great local shops and attractions. Some of the best beaches in the world. Easy ferry and bus system around the island, visitors cannot rent a car.

We loved it so much, we are going back there this October. :):D

Lots of diversity of choice here. Was just curious to know peoples thoughts. We would choose St. Martin or St. Thomas probably because of the wide variety of things to do and the access to dare I say American food. While we like to experiment now and them we are definitely not foodies. We also like the idea of being able to make one of the cities the home base and spend the day around the island.

What we would really like is to have a ship spend a week between these two islands. I know that might sound silly to some, but I think we would really enjoy it.
