TNSunshine86 Posted April 26, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 26, 2014 Hi! I know this question has been asked before but I was unable to find the post I had seen in the past... So I'll just ask it again. We are going a 6 day cruise next week and I was curious how much cash people usually bring? Thanks! CruiserBruce Posted April 26, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 26, 2014 There are so many variables here. Extra tips? We generally do maybe $50-60 a week, on average. Maybe a little more. Going ashore and buying things that need $$$ for, not credit card? Who knows besides you. Other things? I guess for a 6 day cruise I would have at least $100, probably $150 in cash. Keep in mind there are ways to get cash at the Front Desk.
luddite Posted April 26, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 26, 2014 $ 84,000. Give or take.

cb at sea Posted April 27, 2014 #5 Share Posted April 27, 2014 (edited) If you're using a credit card for shipboard expenses, you won't need much cash onboard. Unless you gamble...then bring what you feel comfortable losing....that's the usual outcome! For ashore...depends what you want to do? Will you be buying expensive stuff? If so, will you be using cash? Straw markets usually are cash, so if that's what you're looking to do, bring cash for that. We bring about $1000 for a week....give or take...if we don't spend it, the bank will let us redeposit it! Better to have more, than not enough. No need to bring wads of small denominations...the ship will break down large bills for you. $50 in ones is pretty damn bulky! OCruisers Posted April 27, 2014 #6 Share Posted April 27, 2014 For a week we take about $1,500 in large bills and some smaller bills. The ship will break down the large bills. While we never spend that much cash, we like to have it just in case. LuLu
t_car Posted April 27, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 27, 2014 In most cases we bring $150 to $200. $20-30 in small bills for room service tipping. If cabin steward or dining staff is really attentive, then we'll leave an extra cash tip. Small amount for souvenirs on shore. Everything else is on the sign and sail card, even gambling, but we are not big on gambling. My wife insists on leaving her contribution in the casino. :D:D
Krazy Kruizers Posted April 27, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 27, 2014 The amount you need will vary by whom all you may tip or spend money on when ashore -- including tips for shore excursions, food, souveniours. Also many people will give tips to people who deliver room service. We are among those who do give extra tips to those people who have made our cruise an enjoyable one. If we need ones for tips, we just get change at the front office.
Ehpride Posted April 27, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 27, 2014 It depends. 1) how are you paying for your onboard account? 2) food in port city or while traveling? 3) how much do you need for extra tips? This will depend on taxis, porters, room service, etc. 4) how are you getting around the port city or to and from the port? You'll want cash for taxis. 5) what are you doing in ports? Do you need cash for any excursions, food, souvenirs or transportation? 6) how many people are you traveling with? notentirelynormal Posted April 27, 2014 #10 Share Posted April 27, 2014 I take a minimum of $1000 for a 7-10 cruise. I take $2000 if family is traveling with us. Fifty dollars of that are singles and $50 in $5s to be used for tips along the way, room service and back home or just in case I need a coke out of a machine. I use my credit card to pay the on board expenses and for large purchases on shore. What's left comes home with me and goes back in the bank. I'm one of those that likes to have cash in case of an emergency. I don't even go for a day trip with under $100 for emergencies.
Kroozen Posted April 28, 2014 #11 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Like other people have said, the only thing you need cash for on board is for extra tips and the casino. Everything else will get charged to your on board account. If you plan on setting up a cash account, you'll need cash for that. I usually bring about $500-$750 in cash for a week long cruise, but I've always come home with money.
Talisker92 Posted April 28, 2014 #12 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Were were on a 31 day cruise, and I took $100 in singles for room service and tour guide tips. I took $500 to pay for some private shore excursions, and another $400 for everything else. Any large purchases were paid for on my credit card. Rare Roz Posted April 28, 2014 #14 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Most of my cash is spend pre and post cruise, for taxis, shuttles, meals, etc. I put hotels and shipboard acct. on credit cards. Good advice about bringing a lot of $1 bills. Roz
