Bonus Days Question

I was reading through all the information I can on Holland's website when I came across this:

Are any onboard charges excluded from the onboard purchases bonus?

All casino charges, cash advances, Future Cruise deposits, and associated fees are excluded. All other onboard purchases including Hotel Service Charge, Beverage Service Charge, taxes, pre-booked shore excursions and all gift items purchased online or through Ship Services count towards bonus cruise day credits.

So Hotel Service Charge (that's the tips right?) and excursions count towards bonus cruise day credits, great. Is it considered only the "onboard charges"??

If I call today and pay my tips and pay now for my excursions is that counted or not?? Thanks :)

You can not pre-pay the HSC (it is added to your on-board account daily) but you can purchase OBC which acts as a cash deposit against your final bill.

It seems to me that HAL credits partial increments as a day's credit. For instance, if you spend $565 on board, you are credited with 2 days. Am I wrong?

In my case they have seemed to be very liberal with their rounding up. Much less than $565 will get you the additional day!

My experience as well; thanks for the confirmation. Now if they would only credit casino charges, I would be a 6 star Mariner by now.

Yes, very liberal in our case too. I think once we were only about $25 past a breakpoint and got the day credit! Edited by catl331

I have found them to be very liberal as well. On our last cruise the Spa charged us for an extra massage and they reversed it with a credit the same day, so they caught it before I did. Since they did it with a credit, I think I ended up with an extra day. Even with a generous rounding up, I should never have gotten as many credits as I did.

Thanks for the info guys. So if we pay the tips now and buy beverage cards online that all counts?

Does the 300 have to be on the one day? Or is it over the cruise?

All expenses attached to your booking number count. So, if you reserve Pinnacle Grill, make appointments at the salon, or book shore excursions in advance, the amount spent counts.

It's all spread out over the course of the cruise---from pre-cruise expenses right up to the bitter end. The total expenses, without consideration for any on board credits, counts toward Mariner Days.

No, the 300 does not have to be in one day. If you spend 600 total for your cruise onboard, you would get 2 bonus days.

If you buy beverage cards online, you do not get credit. The purchases have to be ONBOARD to count. Same goes for excursions. You can purchase onboard credits however and these will go toward you account as a Credit. Then when you purchase the item onboard it goes to your account as a debit (and you get credit for that).

For example, HAL gave us a $120 credit for a massage in our account. When we actually got the massage, $120 was charged (debited) to our account, so we got credit. If HAL had just given us the massage for free, we would not have gotten the credit.

I've had a totally different experience. All my pre-cruise expenses have counted toward my Mariner days.

ok I'm gonna make sure I have it straight :) If I don't I'm slow sorry!! :s

So let's say I want to get a shore excursion and a beverage card. Comes to 89 dollars. If I was to buy a $100 OBC today and in 3 days time I order them online am I able to use the OBC for those two things? And if I did will it count towards the bonus days?

Thanks again

Same here. We try to purchase our HAL shore excursions before the cruise, and they have always counted.

Not true. If you read the FAQs it explicitly says they count, and they have always counted for me. Likewise, all gifts from your TA/friends/family also count.

Sorta! :) If you buy $100 OBC and only use $89 worth on those two items, you will get $11 back and just $89 credit for the spending bonus. Purchased OBC (by you or your family/friends/TA) are like a cash deposit toward your final bill, but you only get credit for whatever part of them you spend on board. If this was not the case you could "buy" bonus days by purchasing up to the maxiumum $300 times the number of actual cruise days and get most of it back in cash unspent. Edited by jtl513

You cannot spend OBC in advance of boarding.

You can buy yourself OBC and have it applied to your account giving you a credit balance when you start your cruise. Once on the ship, you can spend that credit on anything you wish but you cannot spend it in advance of boarding.

You have to put anything you buy in advance of boarding on your credit card but all those charges to your credit card will be counted toward your 'spending days'.

The bolding is mine. My understanding is that any purchases (within the rules) count whether they are bought on line in advance or on board.

On line purchases do count - at least they have for us. I buy a lot of things on line and receive the appropriate number of days for it.

You do not have to purchase shore excursions, beverage cards, PG dinners, whatever on board to get the mariner day credit. If you purchase on line in advance, as long as you use them, you certainly get the credit for those.

My mistake! I was thinking about On Board Credits (we had a major issue with this on our recent cruise and it was on my mind) instead of the purchases counting toward the bonus days. To restate, you are correct that all purchases, either made onboard or online prior to sailing count toward your $300 per day bonus credit figure.

So sorry again.
